does it make a sound?
i had this strange squealing noise around 20mph and above, like a brake wear indicator sound, so i check the brakes, they're fine, half the pad left at least. so i grab the wheels and give them a tug to see if the wheel bearings are going, no play. the next day the noise is gone, but my speedo and odometer have stopped moving, the revs are limited to 4500 and the cruise has stopped working. CEL is on, but i can't find my scanner
the car uses the magnetic/electronic type VSS not a cable. so I'm at a loss as to how to explain it making a noise before it died.

There is a driven gear in the transmission.
To get at it you have to pull the box & split the case.
Get the cel code & go from there...
Put a magnet on a cordless drill & pull trigger to simulate speed from now on :p

I'd pull the speed sensor & see what's up... there isn't a ton of info after searching, check your Hanes Manual...
Last resort would be cracking the case.

code scanner and manual are still MIA. i know there is a driven gear in there, and i really have been hoping thats not the problem. the amount of work involved just for that does not thrill me at all. I'm gonna stop at a parts store tonight and have them pull the code. a search other places has turned up some people having trouble with the cluster itself, and the noise could have been coming from there, i may pop that out on saturday just to have a look. i still have little hope it's not gonna be an inside greabox job

how does the pintle on your speed sensor look? is it loose? can you wiggle it?
98's are known for bad VSS sensors, its the easiest way to go before worrying about the gear in the tranny.

pintle? not sure i follow you there. never heard that term in this regard before.
but if the VSS went bad, and not the gear, would it make a sound? i thought it was just a magnetic sensor, no moving parts involved.
