View Full Version : 280Hp engine importing....
MichiganRS 04-18-2001, 02:51 AM Below is some info I got...
It sounds like a good deal if you go without the engine managment or it would be cheaper to buy afteramrket engine managment figure 2300 invested and youw ould be set. Please post your thoughts. also at min. wouldn't that be a better block to run if you have a turbo RS or plan to turbo your RS?
Here is an email I got I thought I would share:

The pricing will depend on what comes with the unit(s). Engine
with auto
trans = $950. Engine with 5 speed trans=$1,300. Engine with
wiring
harness, ECU and 5 speed transmission=$5,000. I am not sure if
they are
from the Impreza or Legacy.

MichiganRS 04-18-2001, 03:13 AM Oh yeah I should also ask this....
I few months back I was looking to do this but prices wernt this good. At the time someone said there was EJ20T in the legacys and I should be carful what I get. Does it matter if it is a Legacy engine or not it will bolt right up wouldn't it? Also did they make a 285 HP legacy engine?
Thanks,
John
tomas 04-18-2001, 11:13 AM I just want to know if the twin turbo EJ20R will fit into an Impreza. I already know about the different cross members, new downpipe, ecu & loom replacement, and potential tranny problems but what I don't know is if it will physically fit into the engine bay. Are there any other complications?
brandonl 04-18-2001, 11:50 AM As far I know the 280hp legacy has a TT motor only. and it would be serious work to go into a US impreza, due to the drivers side turbo set up having clearance problems with the master cyl/booster. plus that engine is a birds nest of vacuum lines and wiring. www.adelaidejap.com.au (http://www.adelaidejap.com.au) has 280hp WRX engine packages for $4000 aussie dollars, look up the exchange rate and you'll see its worth paying the shipping cost.
good luck
MY99 2.5GT 04-18-2001, 12:35 PM I just got off the phone with Jeremy at www.Jemco.com. (http://www.Jemco.com.) He said the next 6 EJ2.0TT engines from the B4 are all spoken for. He also said out of all the ones he has been able to import there have been maybe 1 that came with a 5spd transmission. He said with some minor tweaking you could fit a 5spd tranny from a 2.2. I wonder if you could buy the twin turbo setup and fit it to an EJ25 DOHC in a Legacy? I'll call and find out.
Jessie James 04-18-2001, 03:28 PM I reasearched the Jemco thing, and importing stuff from Australia, and I decided the best thing to do was turbo the 2.5 engine.
About the same price for entry level, few (if any) wiring headaches, do you really have time to pull the whole darn engine and tranny and hope it all fits together, and I think for about the same amount of money you can do it yourself and get better results.
I would personally (after thinking about it for a long time) just replace the pistons in the 2.5 with JE and Crower rods (like ASR has done) and go from there.
Check out my web site for my thoughts on the turbo kit. http://www.RS25.com

Damn! And to think that a local shop offered to give me a old STI Version3 motor and tranny. I guess I'll have to go back for it and turn around and sell it for way more then its worth. I think I'd skip the ECU and buy a link setup but the wiring harness might be nice to have unless the car it came out of had features that your doesn't which seriously makes things harder.
Greg Sharpe 04-18-2001, 09:41 PM I watched a RS get a WRX engine and computer/harness. It was super scary looking! I've stripped cars down to bare metal to put sound deadening and extensive stereo wiring in, but seeing a wiring loom install was an eye-opener! On the bright side though, the engine fell right in, A/C compressor, fuel lines, and all, fit.
98mpreziveRS 04-18-2001, 09:48 PM http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/lol.gif i was about to do this untill i got the current car. the wiring loom is a NIGHTMARE http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/frown.gif on the other hand a possum link works wonders http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/lol.gif or a motec... *shrug*
grnlantern1 04-18-2001, 10:09 PM Hey adams racing in california can put up to 400 horses under the hood if you got the money. That's a built up 2.5 turbo set up. check out their web site using the links...
MichiganRS 04-18-2001, 10:26 PM Well here is another great email yet for more motivation and pain to my checkbook...

Hi John,
The 4F system will run the fuel and spark on this engine however
it will not
control the wastegate. Also if it has the coil on plug ignition,
it's best
to use our supplied coil pack. The factory TPS and knock sensor
should be
compatible. Base price is $1134US and you will need a MAP sensor
at least as
well for $70 or $80, depending on boost level. Be aware that the
Japanese
spec engines are tuned to run on 96-98 octane fuel.
Our wiring harness is about the same diameter as your index
finger and all
sensor cables are grouped with connectors installed. Just pull
them through
the firewall grommet and plug them in. A new injector harness is
also supplied.
You will have to mount our crank sensor and magnets which will
be a bit time
consuming.
Cheers,
Ross

tomas 04-19-2001, 01:40 AM Suppose I tried to stuff this 280HP beast into my little Impreza. What about emissions? Will it pass?
Can somebody who has ever attempted, seen, or participated in a swap give me some insight on how many hours it would take to put in the new loom? Can you guestimate how many wires will need to be lengthened?
Am I nuts? Should I just slap on a turbo and call it a day?
