View Full Version : Stock map for STU...
El Capitan 04-05-2007, 11:12 AM The main topic here is a safe tune, not motorsports, but if it needs to be moved then so be it....
Currently I am running the Cobb Stg II with a full 3inch TBE.
It is a big PITA to find 100 Octane gas here in DFW (no Sunoco's sell it here like back East) and since I live in a Apt, I don't want to fool with having to buy and store Toluline.
Would it be safe to run the stock map with a full 3inch Exhaust? STU rules say I can only run stock boost. I really don't want to run SM or SP.
I figure that while I won't be able to take advantge of the extra timing (and thus power) the 100 Octane and Cobb STU map would bring, it should be safe, just not the best tune to take advantage of my Exhaust.
Is this reasoning sound?
blackdub06 04-05-2007, 02:26 PM how are they gonna know you are not running stock boost? Its a new engine program how would they know your not running stock boost. I know a few guys that run in STU and don't flash back to stock. no proof that your running higher boost:devil:
El Capitan 04-05-2007, 03:01 PM First I'd be protested then I'd be asked to show my current map I guess (assuming by some freak ocurance I did well enough for someone to care). Apart from that I'd know and that would bother me. It might seem silly over something so small, but my integrity means a lot to me and if I say I'm sighned up for STU then I'm going to be legal. If I can't run my stock map then when I check in I'll change over to SM or SP.
I don't really think I'd be in top three so It won't matter any who. I'm just look'en to have a good time.
I didn't have this issue last year since I was in AS.
El Capitan,
Im the same way. Would like to run an STU legal map that didnt require 100 oct fuel. If you dont want to get protuned then I would look into getting a mail order map from pdx. Check out their website. They cost 175 bucks and you will get a STU map and a stage 1,2 and valet map i think. I also know you will be able to get a map that supports all your mods (say if you had a intake and lightweight pulley or some other mod besides the tbe). I plan on giving them a call and asking them a few questions but it sounds like a good option until you get money to get a protune.
waktasz 04-06-2007, 10:40 AM Open source my friends! Sell the AP and use the $600 for a dyno tune by a pro :)

Wow. Those guys are ********. The boost table can be pulled. Probably not going to happen at a local event, but at a national, if they got protested, they would lose.
Those guys that are cheating are probably slower than dog **** anyway, or someone would have said something to them by now.
El Capitan 04-06-2007, 11:01 AM ...The boost table can be pulled...
I'd say it's easier than that, If the officials asked me to just plug in my AP and show the map and it said, "Stg II" then obviously I'm not at stock boost unless I had a custom map and named it the same for some odd reason.
Fact of the matter is I am satisfied with my Cobb OTS Stg II map for now. My car runs great. I know it can be better with a protune and I fully intend to get one, but right now there isn't a shop I would trust to do it with in a 3 hour drive.
I was just wondering if my stock map would cause any unsafe conditions for my engine if I used it with a full 3inch TBE.
I am moving back to N.VA this late summer and plan on making a trip to Mach V or making a detour to stop by DynoFlash while going to see my in-laws in ME.
thrdeye 04-06-2007, 11:09 AM No, you will be fine during autocross with the stock map, since you will only be using short bursts of acceleration.
I would run the stock as a base map and run stage 2 as a real time, then during autocrosses, just flash the stock map as the real time as well.
El Capitan 04-06-2007, 11:31 AM Thank you. I've seen guys in almost stock RS's smoke STis all day at autocrosses. I'm a firm believer that the order of importance is 1)Driver 2)tires/ suspension 3) power. In that order.
The guy who uses the brake and turns the wheel the least... wins.

werd, thats why im running stock motor in STU, and i mean everything motor wise is stock;)
plus being friends and driving with 05-06 STU champ Branden Burkhart helps a little:cool:
FtW_STi 04-17-2007, 07:12 PM Hi,
I too am getting started in autocrossing and was wondering about the map situation for STU. I'm not wild about re-flashing my ECU for every event (they do have a limited number of flashes) so I was wondering how everyone dealt with this. Can you run stage 2 as base and then STU map (protune) as realtime and be compliant? Or does it have to be the other way around (STU protune base and stg 2 as realtime). Basically, I want to enjoy my extra juice on the street, but I want to remain STU legal during competition. Sorry for the hi-jack, just wondered what you guys did/thought.
Thanks
thrdeye 04-18-2007, 02:37 AM For local stuff, we run the STU as a real time over a street map. It works. It also works the other way (STU base, stg 2 realtime), but we noticed poor fuel economy this way.
For national events, we do a full reflash to an STU base. FWIW, the number of reflashes that an ECU can handle is not really set in stone...no one seems to know.
hondaeater69 04-18-2007, 02:49 AM i thought cobb released an STU map?

they did and it cant be used:banana:
FtW_STi 04-18-2007, 11:07 AM That's the way it seemed to me too (about the Cobb STU map) since it uses 100 octane gas. The solo rules say you have to run on pump gas and they specifically exclude "race gas" available at the pump at some gas stations. At least I'm pretty sure I read that... Anyone else read this?
thrdeye 04-18-2007, 11:20 AM 100 OCT is legal in ST. It is available from a pump and is unleaded. Where it is available locally, you would have to research.
There's a Sunoco GT 100 pump outside the scruitneering building at Heartland Park Topeka (where the National Championships are). That's what we ran last year, because you can only get 91 OCT in that part of the country.
FtW_STi 04-18-2007, 11:54 AM 3.6 FUEL
A. Stock and Street Touring Class vehicles will use service station
pump fuel only. Pump fuel is defined as that which is “Federally
approved for use on public highways.” This does not allow racing-
type fuels which are available at service station pumps.
-2007 SCCA Solo rules
So the last sentence does not forbid GT100? I mean, i could see your point because GT100 is approved for highway use, but it is a racing type fuel available at a service station pump. I'm confused.... clarification?
thrdeye 04-18-2007, 12:39 PM The GT100 is unleaded and legal for street use, per sunoco's website. Thus it is a legal fuel. Everyone would run it all the time if it were not so expensive.
Racing fuel is generally leaded and starts at about 114 Oct.
FtW_STi 04-18-2007, 01:36 PM Oh, ok, cool. So then if its unleaded and highway legal everything's gravy?
Sorry, I'm new at this and just trying to figure out all the rules.

Yep, if uncle sam says you can run it on the street, it's legal to run in ST.
El Capitan 04-18-2007, 04:57 PM I'm just going to keep it STG II and run BSP with the Street tire PAX. I want to run the car the way I drive it every day.
As long as my last run is faster than the first then I'll be happy.
FtW_STi 04-18-2007, 06:34 PM So if you run BSP with street tires you get a handicap?

if you run BSP in the ST class, your placed by your PAX time

see how you'll racing all different classes but all on street tires
FtW_STi 04-18-2007, 10:50 PM oooohhhhh. gotcha
