View Full Version : Tranny & rear diff fluid?

Jay04WRX

I was reading the FAQ thread and it did not say if you can use the same fluid for the tranny and the rear diff in my 5MT WRX. I read something about 85w-90 for the rear diff and 75w-90 for the tranny, is this correct? Can someone help me out with this.

Thank You

I know Im wasting my time and yours by you reading my post. The diamond in the rough tranny, not rear end fluid is supertech semi synthetic GL-5 75w90. As on the bottle, excellent for brass, copper and not for limited slip fill. Not for limited fill = excellent shifting. Mobil1 in the tranny is a bad idea as its too slippery and bad for copper, call them up on it. The boutique fluids, if so great, have not as of yet made the 5 speed wrx tranny a reliable piece.

I was told that I need to buy 6 quarts/bottles for the tranny and rear diff total. Can anyone tell me if this is correct?

Use Uncle Scotty's cocktail in your tranny and M1 75w-90 in the rear diff.

This has been discussed to death. Search for Uncle Scotty's cocktail. Print out products, buy, drain tranny and rear end, add contents, drive. Your car will love you for it.

IIRC, it's 3.8 qts. for the tranny and .8 for the rear diff. So you should be good with 5 qts. I've been using Valvoline 75W90 for the last 50K+ miles (with regular changes of course) that I got at my local NAPA - $4.99 a bottle. Tranny shifts smoothly (for a Subaru tranny) and I haven't had any problems :)

I JUST did all my fluids 2 days ago on my 2005 wrx. I bought 6 bottles but only used 4. I used 75w-90 in BOTH rear diff and tranny. You could buy 5 to be safe. Either way if you dont end up using the last bottle you can always go get your refund, like I did.

I have 60k on my car and have never done the tranny or rear diff fluid change. I skipped it at the 30k tune-up. Thank you for the qts total.

Any thoughts on using OEM fluid? I thought some of the aftermarket products were too slippery for the synchros in the tranny?

I honestly think the synthetic will be better for the tranny. The fluid might be too slippery synchros but the gears are so still with OEM fluid IMO. getting into first, second and reverse are such a pain in the arsh.

I've heard the same thing and will not put the synthetics in my transmission. I'm sticking with the OEM all the way.

Yup. I didn't have a good experience with synthetics either, so that's why I've gone with the closest thing to OEM (if not OEM) - Valvoline 75w90 Dino Oil. But on the other hand, some people have had great experiences with sythentic and Uncle Scotty's Cocktail while OEM was horrible for them. Subaru trannies are mysterious like that

...the only time the cocktail has been 'horrible' was when the wrong ingredients were used.

i had one douchbag PM me that it sucked---turns out he bought the NON-'HypoyC' castrol gear lube  ......and it DID suck......but because HE sucked.

Have there been many cases where the full synthetic fluids such as the Motul are too slippery for the tranny and can possibly harm the synchros?

Scotty,

I am having trouble getting the redline products. Do you happen to know the part numbers is for the lightweight shockproof along with the 75w-90 GL for the rear tranny?

go there. read under universal find redline products. Buy.

They are about 5 dollars a quart cheaper than anyone around me and takes onoy 2-3 days to get here.

Make Uncle Scotty's Cocktail. It works very well.

+1 on jscspeed.com being cheaper than local by $5/qt. wow.. Those are great prices. Wish I hadn't picked up the redline today at winchester auto ($12/qt for 75w90ns and $11 for the shockproof).

I'm not doing Uncle Scotty's cocktail, but trying NS+heavy shockproof. We'll see how well it works (and yes, I've read most of the bazillion threads on it). Not dissing the cocktail, just trying something different myself.

My '04 wrx tranny never grinds except when it's my fault, although I do get a "crunch" now and again when I shift quickily into first from N at a stoplight. 2->1 below 10-15mph without difficulty, but lots of problems shifting into 1 or R when fully stopped, often have to bounce it through 2 to get into 1, or go 2->1->R to get into R. Sometimes even have to let out the clutch a hair to start to rotate the gears to get the gears to line up right to get into R when fully stopped (especially if I stopped with it in 1, set the parking brake, and am now trying to back out of the parking spot). I could jam it, but no thanks.

be SURE to post your findings....id bet that temperatures below ~50°F will yeild poor shifting action

and your current 'symptoms' indicate a 'too slippery' fluid.

I dunno what's in there now, bought the car used at 35K miles. It's been this way for all (or most of that time). Bought it from a dealer (Ford), and should have found out what they did, if anything, other than armor-all the engine (disgusting film that just loves to attract dirt...)

Will definitely post results.

Ok so in talking with a few people (not subaru people) they have this shocked look on their face when I talked to them about mixing diff fluids for the tranny. I understand that it has been done and used for a few years but has anyone had any problems with the cocktail mix?

My mechanic friend and a few others said just use synthetic. Everyone on the boards said use the cocktail or a synthetic. I was also told a synthetic might be too slippery for the tranny and possibly bad for the synchros. I am just a little worried and nervous about putting oil mix into a $2-3,000 item.

just use the cocktail already. if you find out it doesn't work for you, swap it out for 4qts of castrol hypoc and be done with it.

w/ the cocktail you won't have to worry about the slipperyness of a synthetic, you'll get the durability of a dino oil with the added benefits of the syncromesh and shockproof.

Well I went by Unabombers faq and got the Redline LW and now he is saying to not use it.. jeez.
I quote..
"What brand/type of transmission fluid should I use and how do I do it myself?

The Subaru 5MT can be a picky about what fluid you should use. Popular fluids that have a large fan base are:

a. OEM fluid AKA non synthetic 75w90 gear oil
b. Uncle Scotty's Cocktail of 1qt Redline lightweight shockproof, 1qt Pennzoil or GM Synchromesh, 2qt Castrol HypoyC 80w-90.
c. Full Redline lightweight shockproof
d. Motul 300

While we are big fans of sticking to OEM fluids on NASIOC, this is one case where using something not SOA recommended has shown actual benefit, mainly in helping with synchro interaction."

Hank3
04-27-2007, 10:02 AM
Yeah...just pick one and use it :)

If it doesn't work well, it's not going to be detrimental to switch out to a new fluid. It's part of the fun with our trannies. You have to find the one that works best for your tranny. Have fun...

1 quart of Synchromesh and the rest Redline 75W90NS, and I don't have any grinding. This reminds me...my 15K mile tranny/diff fluid change is coming up. :(

I'm about 20 minutes away from Summit Racing. Cheap Redline FTW! :D

Did mine this weekend with 1qt of RL LW Shockproof and the rest was Castrol Hypoid C 80w-90. So far so good. The shifts and engagements are much smoother. I'll be doing the rear diff this weekend.

Apparently Castrol HypoyC 80w-90 is hard to find in my area. I called several local auto shops. I couldn't even get a suggestion as to where to call.

Anyway, you can get this stuff from amazon. PM me if you need the link.

Thanks Uncle Scotty. Hope this helps others.
