Hey everybody,

This question pertains to anyone who is fairly expert at fixing all kinds of Subarus.

I have a 1993 Subaru Impreza hatchback which originally had a 1.8L engine, but over the winter as I was driving it down the highway the engine starting loud noises and then all of a sudden these huge clouds of pure white smoke came out from my car. I pulled over and popped the hood and noticed green liquid everywhere. I tried starting the engine but more smoke appeared and the engine itself wouldn't start.

I found out that the engine threw a rod or something, but no one knew qute why it did (the oil was still good and all). I decided this was the perfect opportunity to replace my engine with something more powerful. So, I got a 2.5L engine in excellent condtion. I am having a certified Subaru mechanic out of Carolton, OH work on it. He has the engine in, but everytime he starts the car the mass amounts of white smoke appear.

Does have to do with any kind of recall that this particular car might have had in the past? And if so or not, does anyone know what's wrong and how to fix it. I would like to if at all possible, keep my car a long time.

Hello:
Hopefully you did not get a new engine with a blown head gasket, a known problem with these engines.
How long did you let the new engine run with the white smoke? Could the exhaust system be full of anti freeze from the first blown engine that needs to be burned out? A long shot I think.
You need to do a leak down test on the new engine to assess for a blown gasket and replace it if necessary. The mechanic should know how to do this.
