Well after a March Gran Turismo Challenge put on by MattDell, he has decided to put with Studies first instead of Continuing the fun at least through April. HA HA So Thats were I come in. I have put together another Challenge and for the most part will keep the rules and what not the same as last month. The plan is to do a tournament style challenge, I will at least have a handful of challenges. Below I have copied and pasted the rules and regulations the MattDell put together for the previous challenge.

Overview of Rules
Many of this stuff is repeated from above, but go ahead and read this for all the fine details. Sorry for the rigid structure, but I just want to make sure everyone is clear! Above all, I just want people to have fun with this.

Note that these rules will most likely change around this first month. Be sure to check the edit time of this first post to see if I've updated it!

The Challenges
I have decided to starts the challenges on a friday and end on a friday to make it a little easier to remember what the deadline is to submit a time, so the deadline for your submission comes at every friday by midnight EST.
I will ideally try to keep lap times under 2 minutes, however I can't guarantee this. I will also try my best to keep the challenges both interesting and challenging. No one wants to be driving a Triumph Spitfire down the back straight of Circuit de la Sarthe II, do they?
I will try to get the challenges up at a reasonable time, but don't expect things to be updated at exactly 12:00AM EST for each challenge.
THIS WILL BE A 10 CHALLENGE TOURNAMENT
You will notice that on the day the current challenge ends and new one has already began, I will try it this way just so that every things ends on the same day, so I will try and have each new challenge up on Friday evenings.

Submission
I cannot read this thread to find everyone's best time. Therefore, I'm requesting that everyone PM me their best time for each week's challenge. Simply send me a PM with your screenname, screen shot and time, and then an example of the PM subject would be "challenge #1 time.
You may only submit one time per week, so make sure that the time you send me is your fastest! After you submit a time, you cannot submit another. Sorry to be a hardass, but it will make things run smoother on my end.
To submit a time, you must send me a screenshot of your time! I feel the majority of people have either a digital camera or camera phone, so this shouldn't be a problem. If it is, I'll reconsider. In your photo, please make an attempt to somehow show the car in either third person or in text. Obviously I'll be lenient here, but this is ideally what you should send me.
Also to make things easier, please use this format when you PM
Quote:
Subject: Challenge #1 time for [username]
Message:
[Your time]
Attach a screen shot!

Scoring
After each round I will compile everyone's submitted time. From there, I will determine everyone's position for that challenge.
Points system as follows:
1st place: 15 points
2nd place: 12 points
3rd place: 10 points
4th place: 8 points
5th place: 6 points
6th place: 5 points
7th place: 4 points
8th place: 3 points
9th place: 2 points
10th place: 1 point
Lower than 10th place: 0 points
After each week, the points will be added up so you can see who's leading whom. At the end of the tournament, the points will be tallied for the final results.
Unless there is a crazy number of participants, I think this scoring system should work quite well for this application. If not, I might consider revising it.

Miscellany
The game version is Gran Turismo 4.
You should use simulation mode, not arcade mode.
Above anything else, please do not cheat. Cheating consists of cutting corners, taking more than two wheels off the track, modifying your car when the rules do not permit, etc. Just don't do it. The only thing I can confirm with a photo is that you used the specified car on the specified track to get your submitted time. Therefore, this makes it a partial honor system and I hope everyone can respect that. Again, this is for fun so there shouldn't be any reason to cheat!
I'm extremely open to suggestions for challenges, rules, or whatever! Either post it up in the thread or PM me. I'm always open to new ideas!
Even though you can only submit one time to me, you are extremely encouraged to post up your current best time in this thread and trash talk amongst yourselves! It will definitely make things more fun!
I will try not to pick extremely difficult cars to source, but occasionally you may be required to purchase an expensive car or acquire a prize car. It's just the nature of the beast, so be prepared! If you need extra cash, I highly suggest running the Fuji 1000km endurance event with an F1 car. It only takes a few hours and you get around 1,500,000 credits after prize money and after.

Ok I think that should cover it if i have forgotten anything please let me know. I will post the current challenge below is red so everyone is on the same page, if I end up changes anything i will highlight it in red, so hopefully I have covered everything. Have Fun!!!

Challenge #1
Vehicle: Chevrolet Corvette Z06 (C5) '00
Course: " World Circuits" Infineon Raceway Sports Car Course
Rules: Must have stock HP no engine mods, exhaust mods, and NO NITRIOUS
All other modifications legal so go nuts with any suspsension, brake, weight reduction, you may choose any tire compound and of course driver aids are your choice. SO stock HP a must and everything else is up to you.
I'm in. Just to be 100% clear..are we allowed to add a wing and tune downforce?

I think we need to do this out on the west coast

I'm assuming you can do anything as long as the HP stays the same.

Unless you allow full modifications people will cheat like they did in matt's challenge.

I disagree - these challenges that use an 'honor system' seem to work great.

For the record I never cheated in Matt's challenge. Not once. I never even won a weekly challenge. You did win one weekly challenge. So if anything you're pointing the finger at yourself. If I was going to cheat, why would I do it to come in 2nd or 5th or 7th? These challenges are relaxing and fun. If I come in DFL I wouldn't give a crap.

So what kinda times are people turning?

I have stock 404hp (after oil change), full suspension, aero, brakes, R5 tires and an lsd upgrade and I'm turning times in the 1'26.xxx range.

NRTmotorsports
04-07-2007, 04:06 PM
Yeah you are allowed to change anything you want EXCEPT for anything that will increase horsepower. You can add a wing adjust downforce, change any transmission, suspension and brake components.

128:382 is the best I can muster with an oil change. Hp ratings seem to vary on the stock power depending on if you're buying parts or looking at it in the garage. I'll be lucky to shave a couple morth tenths off of that, but I am being lazy and using a slushbox !

How do I send screenshots without attachment posting priveleges ? At what point do I get to, anyway ? Do I have to have 1000 posts, be a member for 2 years or what ? I can't find that info on the site, and yes I searched !

04-08-2007, 04:26 AM
Just saw this and said what the heck. little to no tuning of suspension/trans/weight balance, etc. Just a hair over 1:30 and I have had a couple ;)

Gonna give it a real try tomorrow.

Lets do something crazy next, like use a subaru of your choice on a particular track, with unlimited mods.

It seems all I do with this game as of late, is run the RING with a subie tuned as close to my own personal ride as possible over and over. Does that make me crazy? :) I know this would really skew the paying field, but it is a game afterall. Doing the real thing is much better.

I snapped a pic of a 1:28.468.....clearly I have work left to do. I've already done a lot of work to improve the front end grip....the car still doesn't turn as easily as I'd like it to. I think I need to soften the rear LSD on accel.

We can change the settings around?

Rules: Car must stay STOCK the way it came when purchased.

I took that as meaning we can't touch anything...

Anyway, got one of my time down to 1'29.xx but averaging 1'30.xx at the moment.

This challenge is a lot harder than the previous two...

Some have gone 1'29 with an off-the-lot stock set-up, so I'm sure we're leaving 3+ seconds out there. I've only done 15 laps or so with the car, so I'm sure I'll go even faster once I do more laps and get more comfortable with the course.

Nice drop in time! :)

I worked at it a little more last night and turned a 1'30.1xx before going to bed. I've made no changes to the suspension or even torque distn on the car - just an oil change and turned all driver aids off (two things we've always been allowed to do).

I feel the car has a 1'28 in her as is. It's all about carrying speed through the turns and keeping the sliding down to a minimum.

So that we can all be on the same page, this was posted on GTVault about suspension set-ups for Rally courses:

RALLY TUNING

These are theories for RALLY setups only.

Spring Rates

Needs to be low (~5-6kg/mm), to soak up the bumps on dirt. Have spring rates at high and you'll have one bouncy car everytime it goes over a small ripple on the dirt road. Increased ride height will compensate for the low sprig rates.

Ride Height

Needs to be high >140. Reason, on landing your jumps, it prevents bottoming out of the car. A higher ride height also compensates for lower spring rates by avoiding the car bottoming out.

Shocks

These needs to be even on Bound and Rebound. Too much Bound shocks and the tires, don't make contact to the ground as fast after compression. Too much Rebound and the car will bounce upon decompression of the shocks. Now adjust between front and rear for fine tuning of understeer/oversteer control. Softer shocks to remove understeer, stiffer shocks to induce more oversteer. I have slightly, slightly more rebound on front usually, to bring the tires back to the ground a bit quicker after compression of the shocks. Providing better tire contact to the ground and reducing understeer. Eg, front 5/ rear 7 on bounds, front 6 / rear 7 on rebounds.

Camber

To your liking. But too much camber stops the car from drifting properly and reduces your tire contact to the ground, ie, less grip. But no camber is also not good. Drifts will be a bit more difficult to control. Keep it between 2.0 and 4.0.

Toe

Now, I'm not sure how GT3/GT$ treats toe. But in the game, I think, negative front positive rear helps reduce understeer (in GT3 = -1.0 / 0.5 are good figures to start. Or in GT4 = -2/-1). And Negative rear positive front reduces oversteer (0.0 / -0.5 are good figures to start in GT3 and 0./-1 in GT4).

Stabilizers

These will help stabilise the car during drifts. But too much will cause the car to loose too much grip around corners. Have it at about 3 or 4. And remember that a lower value at front will help reduce understeer or likewise a higher value at rear will cause oversteer.

Brakes

To your liking. As long as it's not too high, that it causes lockup. Generally figures up to 12 should be enough in Rally.

LSD

As low as possible or none at all. You WANT the tires to spin, to give you controllable drifts in the dirt. Having LSD turned up will stop the tires slipping and you'll notice more understeer in a corner, especially in dirt.

ASM/TCS

Important, not! As above, you want to drift and you want your tires to slip. So TURN these off (ie 0) ! You might as well play an arcade game with these turned on. Only exception is TCS, which can be used on high powered cars to reduce wheel spin. But use it sparingly, or else it causes more understeer.

Gears

Have it on the lower end, that is, if using the auto gears, to the left. This gives more torque rather than high speed. In most rally courses, High speed is not where you gain time, it's around those slow 180degree turns. Higher torque will get you out of the turns fast. As a starting point, use an auto gear value 5 steps to the left of the default auto gear value.

Downforce

Yes, please. The more the better. However, keep it even at front and rear. Why? Too much rear downforce and you'll find the car's front flying up during a jump. Vice versa, for too much front downforce. During a jump it will go into the ground nose first. You want to land on four tires, not your bumper bars.

VCD

Preferably even to help control drifts. But in practice, I find lower VCD values (ie, more RWD) helps reduce understeer. For Rally, start at 30% and reduce slowly towards 10% to remove understeer as suited to your driving style.

There you all go. May you all go forth and produce awesome rally tunes. Disclaimer - of course, no two cars are the same or behave the same. The theory above is a good starting point. Finding the exact point of setup where the car behaves at it's best is a matter of trial and error and a lot of patience.

Good racing,
Fumes

Results and standings updated, looks like another win for JL05STI. Everyones got a chance to catch up this week. Hopefully everyone has some experience with these 2 cars.
Thanks for getting the results up so quickly. One request, in the overall standings, can you please correct my username to read Chiketkd and not Chicketkd. Thanks! :)

This is the set-up I used on this Gathers Civic. If you would like to try it.

suspension
104/114
4/8
2/4
2.0/1.0
-1/0
diff
5/38/5
brakes
1/1
wings
13/18
trans
auto = 10 & final = 4.400
All dirving aids off

Ah crap. With this set-up, I just ran a 1'26:696. Only took me <10 laps to get it. Son of a... need to work on setting up the car more.

At the Grand Valley Speedway, I did a few runs Saturday morning and turned a very dirty 1'43.0xx in the Evo.

I like the feel of the STi better, but with all possible mods on both cars, the Evo makes 30hp more and weighs 30kg lighter than the STi - theres no choice as to which car would be faster! :p

Geez, where are you guys finding these extra 4 seconds? I was happy with a 1'47. I'm thinking its driver error rather than the cars, my cornering sucks.

I turned a 1'45 in the underpowered and overweight STi!

Seriously, there's a lot of time out there. Just dial out the push and make the car as neutral as possible in the turns.

Ok my settings are as follows in the Subaru:
Original Turbo (520HP/506FT/LBS TQ)
Brake Bias 24F/22R (you read that right).
Driving Aids OFF
Gears auto=11 w/final 3.900 (I think I could go a little wider with 6th).
Suspension:
SR 6.4F/5.2R
RH 116F/118R
Shock Bound 6F/6R
Shock Rebound 8F/8R
Camber 2.0F/1.0R
Toe 0/0
Stabilizers 4/4
Default Diff
Default VCD

Time thus far:
1:49.770 That's my fastest. I was at 1:50.xxx then I changed my brake bias from12/11 to 24/22 (That was the only change).

So my question is, Is it me that's teh suck, or is it my set-up?

Chiketkd

^Stiffen your spring rates up to at least 12F/10R, lower your ride height, add much more front -ve camber (at least 4.5) and try the course again. ;)

Those settings should start moving you in the right direction.

Did you set your downforce to max setting? I ran the first few laps with zero downforce and got times in the 1'49 - 1'50 range. I then set downforce to max and ran in the 1'46 - 1'47 range. Started playing around with suspension settings and got it down to a best of 1'43:5xx. This was all with zero drivers aid and transmission auto setting of twelve.

Max downforce took off 3 seconds for me, unfortunately I was runnin 1:50s before. I can not find a set up that does anything but understeer why im on throttle. I have some wicked off throttle oversteer though.

i'm not in the challenge, but just out of curiosity, are you guys running the upgraded VCD? if so, what settings are you guys running?

with the 50/50 split both cars push hard when exiting corners under full throttle...I've been using a 35/65 split and it seems to hold my exit line much better

I'm gonna try the max downforce next and stiffen up my spring rates and add more (-)camber, right now around 8f/6r and running 1:46.xxx's with both cars

I also need to mess around with diff settings under deceleration, turn #1 is pretty sketchy coming down from ~165-170mph, lost control a couple of times and ended up in the sand trap!

Hopefully I can get it down a few tenths more. It's really frustrating driving this particular car with the controller. I keep losing a few hundredths here and there at the corners, cause I can't get the proper steering angle the first time. I usually don't have this problem with other cars but man, I'm having issues entering the corners cleanly. But then again, I've never had to push myself this much when racing the computer! :D .

1'44.295 is the best I could do

staying smooth is the hardest part of fast lap times, I tend to over brake and end up well below my intended entry speed which in turn screws everything up, entry/apex/exit

Ok I got Challenge #6 posted. I will call this the last challenge in this tournament, UNLESS EVERYONE IS HAVING FUN WITH THIS, then I will keep the challenges coming. SO let me know what you think about that. ANyway I decided to let you pick whatever car you want for this challange, you just need to be able to buy the car at the showroom, so no using cars that you have won. F1 car is not legal in this challenge and car along that line, if you can pay for it then its legal. Person with the fastest time wins, thought this should be a fun one.

This rule could be problematic for some. For example, I've completed 94% of the game and I can purchase cars such as the Corvette C5R, Mazda 787B, etc. I'm not sure if someone who's completed 5% of the game will be able to purchase these same cars?

I just ran a lazy 1'27.2xx with two beers in me. No wall contact and I feel I'll drop at least another 2-3 seconds by the end of the week.

My 'hunch' is that light wall contact should be allowed especially on a city course like this where walls are the boundaries of the course.

the first 2nd gear turn, after the wavy bit right off the start? first off, with the proper gearing and line it should be a 3rd gear turn. second, drive the mild R turn before it and it (the L with the jog) as one sweep. sacrifice entry speed on the first R hander to stay closer to the R wall and then set yourself up to jet through the now-straightened chicane.

ah, this was my problem. i was using the stage 3, mistakenly thinking that lag would be too much of an issue. stage 4 + auto gear ratios set at 8 or something like that does the trick. :D

current time 1'24.639".

incidentally, i picked up a component video cable for my ps2 along with some female-female RCA adapters so that i can hook up the sound, and it looks fabulous at HD. aliased and pixelated? yeah, sure, but it's still worlds better than standard resolution.

Have at it some more, b/c I'm sure everyones times will drop the more they run this course. I found that while set-up is important, your driving line is even more important. You have to drive this course as if you were doing an autoX - slow in, fast out.

maybe i will for the next challenge, but this course is frustrating in that a small error sending you wide can send you right into a curb or a barrier that stops you dead. after that happens i usually just exit out and start a new lap. while i exhibited unusual perserverence when slaying the beast of driving mission 34 i'm content with being an also-ran that's not too far off the pace on this course. :D

maybe i will for the next challenge, but this course is frustrating in that a small error sending you wide can send you right into a curb or a barrier that stops you dead. after that happens i usually just exit out and start a new lap. while i exhibited unusual perserverence when slaying the beast of driving mission 34 i'm content with being an also-ran that's not too far off the pace on this course. :D
Gotcha. Do understand that the 'pace' hasn't been established yet and I'm not the best indicator. In the 5 challenges completed thus far, I've finished 5th twice, 4th once and 3rd twice. :p

Hopefully Dogbert2, NRTmotorsports or jl05sti will be able to chime in with their current fast times. :alien:

1:28 so far, I've been whittling it down(started in the 1:32s), Just gotta keep tweaking my settings because I'm running fairly clean laps, I'm just not coming out fast enough. I've got my auto gearing set to 7 with 5th widened out a little(just a couple of tics). 6/8F bound and rebound 7/8R bound and rebound. -3.5F/-1.0R camber. Don't recall the rest of my suspension settings. Brakes are 13F/12R(might change that). I turned off the driving aids.

I turned off my ghost and got a second quicker. I get too competitive with the ghost on.

I'm in the 23.6xx so far and still not a fan of this track. I'm with you NRT on a 22 run being made.

Wow. I didn't realize my lack-luster 1'22.8 would be the current fast time. I guess I'll try to shoot for a 1'21. While this track is different, I feel right at home in the tight stuff as it feels like an autoX course.

for now i am blaming the car, and my lack of ability to set it up lol. I'd like to see a stock car settings challenge soon.

Might be proof positive if it's me or my settings that are the suck!

Lowered my best slightly. I still haven't put together a lap that feels 'good' throughout - 1'22.655:

ah, you've got me by a hair: i lied and went back and played some more :D

1'22.708". wasn't a good feeling run, either, as the front side was a super slow 32.9xx. oh well.

It's up on the directional pad, for both wheel and controller.

Good. Glad to see you went back at it. I'll try my hand again at the course either tonight or tomorrow. I've been as much as 0.9 seconds ahead of my ghost back when my best was a 1'22.8. So I'm +ve a 1'21 could be had if I run a decent lap throughout.

jl05sti, what are you down to now?

Played a bit more last night, down to 1'23.2xx.
