View Full Version : rFactor anyone?
chkltcow 04-07-2007, 03:41 PM I've never lurked in Motorsports much until lately, but I keep seeing Gran Turismo Challenge things which I would have thought were limited to OT... so.. I'll go ahead and ask here with only minimal fear of being moved....
Anybody here play rFactor? In OT we've been trying to get a Wednesday night league going and for the past few weeks have been playing just about every night... a few of us at least. We're trying to get more... and n00bs like me are more than welcome.
If anybody has rFactor, the thread for our nightly junk is here (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1222968) and we're going to get a race going about 2 hours from this post... with qualifying starting at 5pm Eastern today with rTrainer cars and a few add-on tracks. Just go to the last page of the thread and grab the tracks listed. (Livet Glen, Oulton Park, and Philip Island)
Server address is race.baneverything.org if anyone is interested.
Edit: League signup is ready to roll. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1240375

chkltcow 04-09-2007, 04:21 PM I'm trying to put together a n00b-friendly Wednesday night rFactor league now.

As for the comparison to GTR2... I can't say. I've never played GTR2, but I hear the netcode in rFactor is far far more stable. There's a lot of variety in rFactor too, as it was made with mods in mind.

difference with GTR2 and Rfactor..
Well, for starters trying to connect to a game in Rfactor typically works. Simbin/GTR2 netcode is misreable. Also, you'll have an easier time finding a Rfactor online race, servers always pretty active.
the Force feedback in GTR/GTR2/GTL always felt a little better..
Graphics are similar.. but Rfactor seems to be a little easier on the machine.
Biggest difference I guess would be the selection of cars/tracks.. Much more of both for Rfactor.
I switched..
own GTR/GTR2/GTL/R.A.C.E from simbin..
and I'm glad I've given up on them and moved on to Rfactor.

Another LFSer here since 2003!
Although I quite like rF too
waktasz 04-09-2007, 05:33 PM I have GTR2 and just got rFactor this weekend (damn OT!) They are pretty equal as far as I'm concerned although the user interface in rFactor isn't as good IMO. As far as gameplay, they are similar, but the GTR2 driving school is fun. There are way more tracks and cars available to download in rFactor though.
blue blurr 04-09-2007, 08:24 PM Interesting... I've downloading so many tracks for GTR2, not many cars though. What kind of cars are available for rFactor, list somewhere on the internet?
Wait a tic, you buy rfactor online?? There's no CD?

correct.
rFactor was designed from the beginning to be super mod friendly.
The selection of cars, tracks and complete series is HUGE.

Need BB 04-09-2007, 09:10 PM I can setup up a dedicated LFS nasioc server. We should start a nasioc clan. I also have some good setups for rallyx.
Vampyr 04-10-2007, 08:05 AM for the most realistic online racing game... http://www.netkar-pro.com/
It is pretty serious stuff. Though there is no AI to play against.
I have rFactor, GTR, GTR2, GTL, and F1 games...
GTR and GTR2 is great because of the realistic settings.. rFactor seems like it has ALOT of potential, but I'm just not into the fantasy style racing.
Netkar-pro has the most realistic graphics and gameplay in my opinion. If this game got some serious support, it would probably be the Madden footbal of racing games.
ptclaus98 04-10-2007, 08:43 AM Waiting for a computer that can handle this. Although I do have GP4.
StuBeck 04-10-2007, 12:34 PM Netkar looks cool, but only getting a year of updates is weak, and it seems a bit too hardcore. Until there are force feedback pedals and better seats at a reasonable price, I just want to have fun and play, I don't expect a completely realistic experience. The problem is there is just so much you don't get from these games that makes too difficult to play at the absolute limits of the cars.
waktasz 04-10-2007, 12:36 PM I dunno if I have bad posture or what, but does anyone else's back really hurt after 20 or 30 laps? g25 > me
StuBeck 04-10-2007, 04:10 PM Not really.
waktasz 04-10-2007, 04:19 PM Maybe it's my 40 year old rocking chair I sit in.

For anything to be the "Madden of ____ games" it would have to buy out an exclusive license on its subject matter as a way of killing off its superior competition. Sorry... still a bit bitter about that :p
I'm not sure what you mean about "fantasy style" racing in rFactor though.
And as Stu was saying... I want fun. Realistic is nice, but there's a fine line that you must walk between "realism" and "fun". Last night we turned off all the assists, and it was the exact opposite of fun. It's a game... it can't convey the same feelings that a real car can. You can't rely on your butt-dyno to tell you when the back end is letting loose, you can't feel the balance of the car, you have no pedal feel to the brake.... it's all just imaginary. Until there's some way to convey all that through a game... I don't want that level of realism, locking up the brakes in every corner because the tiny spring in my pedals don't give enough resistance to feel how much I'm pressing them. I'll settle for driving with aids and having fun.
waktasz 04-10-2007, 05:49 PM UGH!!! Threshold braking. The r-trainers aren't even fast and I'd lock it up almost every time. Forget about driving something fast and trying to panic brake without at least low ABS turned on.
chkltcow 04-10-2007, 09:29 PM I spent about 15 minutes playing PCC cars with ABS and TC turned off, and I had nowhere near the problems I did with the rtrainers. The trainers lock up the tires in every single corner, even at 70% braking pressure. They offer no feedback before the rear end lets go if you give it too much throttle. The PCC cars at least give some notice before they're gonna let go, and you REALLY have to brake stupidly before you lock up the tires braking.
I just think these trainers are too light.
