View Full Version : How to protect a new paint job?

I've read messages on these forums about small (and not-so-small) paint chips appearing on young cars.

My question is this: Is there anything I can do to help prevent this from happening?

How much would clear coating a brand new car cost? Am I wrong in thinking it should be less than cc'ing a more worn finish?

My WRX is coming in June (hopefully). I want to help fortify it, since I hope to drive it for many years.

a garage and never drive ithttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif

seriously though,
It is pretty much inevitable that it will happen. Subaru isn't known for their quality paint. The only thing is to have a good quality paint put on and pray.
I have only one tiny paint chip on my car and that is even with me powersliding on gravel and dirt roads every chance I get.
Mudflaps will help a little.

You could go get a few good clearcoats on top of the new paint if yours is still fresh off the line. That wouldn't cost that much and it'd help a LOT, I believe.

Just look after the paint as best as you can, you are bound to get some chips, its just part of driving the car. Buy some touch up paint and use a totthpick to fill in the chips, that way you wont get blobs of paint in the chip

Just wait for you paint to get all jacked up, then get a quality custom color. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif

O and if you can't afford stongard, you can always get the "poor man's bra" http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif , some shelf paper.

A garage will help quite a bit though. Parking your car outside is horrible for it.. think of all the rain, snow, dirt, pollen, birds, bugs, freezing temperatures, boiling temperatures (if you're down here).....

A garage is the best thing you can do for you car and I really wish I had one.

So in the end no matter what you do, your paint job is going to end up chipping or something on you. MAN THAT SUCKS!
