I'm not sure if I use an oem fuel filter with this. I have a 2005 wrx so the fuel pump is in the gas tank. (should be fun). I just ordered a "sock" fuel filter for it but I am under the impression that I need to replace the sock and that there may be an oem filter in there too. I wont know until I get in there but I was hoping to have a better understanding before I drain my fuel tank get in there, and then realize I need another filter. Do I need to order a subaru OEM fuel filter as well? Or does walbro make fuel filters that fit their fuel pumps? (The only one I could find was the "sock" which I just got in the mail today. My understanding is that the sock traps big things, and the oem filter gets the finer things.) I would appreciate any insight and yes, I am a Scooby Newbie if you cant tell.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe you ever have to replace the "sock" fuel filter in the gas tank. The fuel filter that should be replaced is located under the hood.

I believe the 05's do not have another filter, just the sock filter over the pump

On the 2004 and below you're correct, the only filter you would replace is under the hood. In 2005 they switched to an in tank fuel filter. *Not sure why, just makes for more of a pain to service* I hadn't heard that you don't need to replace the "sock" fuel filter. Im coming up on 60k and just wanted to make sure everything was done and well maintained.

Yeah, looks like it was changed in '05. Here's a link on Scoobymods that show the parts and instructions for an '05:

Hey, I just did a Walbro swap on my '06 a couple months ago. No need to drain your gas tank to do it. I guess just don't top off your gas right before you get working on it. If yours is in the trunk like mine, take out the backseat. It'll help a ton when removing.
Follow instructions on how to depressurize your fuel system and have some rags handy. You'll still leak some fuel, so do it outside or if you don't mind getting gas in your garage.
For my Walbro, I tossed the filter it came with and used the stock. I've heard the stock one works better. They have the same fitting, so they're interchangable. Hope that helps!

So you're right I didn't need to drain my fuel tank. I did however wait til my gas light turned on to be safe. Their is two fuel filters on the assembly. Atleast with mine and mine has a walbro fuel pump on it. The filter at the end of the pump is where the gas is initially sucked through the pump. It's nickname is the "sock" filter from what I've read.
Right after the fuel pump is the OEM stock fuel filter. Part #42072FE020 its about $65 on subarugenuineparts.com. THIS is the part that I needed. (Be sure to get it online it was $95 at my dealer!!!)
There is a pic of the fuel filter on http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=949082.
I have already taken my fuel pump assembly out and I'm positive this is the part. Its an OEM filter.

I thought you ment the sock filter.
Why do you need to replace that $65 filter?

The owners manual says that I'm supposed to change at 60k, im at 54k and just want to get things taken care of. Its sort of funny that the owners manual says to change it at 60k, but the subaru dealership says they NEVER change those. In the owners manual is does not specify which filter to replace (there is 2 of them). I am just going to replace the sock filter because its so cheap, (I got one from warblo for $8 after shipping). My car is pretty quick and I want to keep the fuel flowing as freely as possible.
