Hand-made shift knobs from Chris (WRXdriftR) @ WC LATHE WERKS

Every knob is made on a hand-crank machining lathe with no computerized controls. This mean each piece is unique, made one at a time, and has a bit of character that mass-produced pieces cannot offer. Each knob is internally threaded with an M12x1.25 tap and will screw right onto the shift lever.

Chris can also provide custom pieces either from a design of your own OR by making small changes to the existing product lineup.
You can PM him here: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/private.php?do=newpm&u=65065
Or email him here: lathewerks [at] turninconcepts.com

*Note about the black plastic material called Acetal Copolymer: This is a very hard polymer plastic which is resistant to dents and scratches. It is similar to Delrin (acetal homopolymer). It has good heat characteristics and will not get too hot or cold in the weather like metal does.

Heres the lineup:

Hi Chris. I measured my current 4EAT knob and it is 5.25" tall, 3" deep hole, and 1.75" diameter. I like the way it sits so I was wondering if it would it be possible to make an aluminum tapered piston to these specs? Or would it look awkwardly disproportionate??? I just don't want it to look too dinky since the auto doesn't have a shift boot. Let me know if this will work. Much appreciated! Kevin

Yes I can make something like this. Although I believe your diameter of 1.75" would be a bit large for a cylindrical style since my standard Tapered Piston (shown above in the original post) is 1.5" diameter and fits my hand (and others) just right. Im 6'2", so I dont have small hands either.
I could make a 3" or 4" tall tapered piston in aluminum and just wont include the boot lip at the bottom, but instead make the bottom cylindrical section slightly longer instead. I would probably make the top cylinder a bit taller to make the knob 3, 4, 5 inches tall, whichever you desire.
How does that sound?

That sounds good. I trust your judgment since you're the pro! I guess a total height of 5" would be good. Should I purchase the aluminum wrx knob on the website and add a note? Thanks. Kevin

Heres a design for what you are looking for. The tap is only 3" long so I cant thread the knob deeper than that unless I make some sort of narrow adaptor. I made the knob 4" tall because 5 would have another two inches above the top of the lever. Let me know how you like it:

Yes, sure. Ive already made two versions of it (with deep and shallow grooves), they are just not on the normal lineup from TiC yet.

How is the feel of that knob compared to a standard sphere shaped one?

Could you make that with a 2" diameter? If so send me a price shipped to 98042.

The grooves are shallow so they are noticeable, but do not make the knob feel very sectioned like the larger deep grooved version. These shallow grooves provide extra grip and you dont have to worry about them collecting grime, just wipe the knob with some acetone on a rag if you dont like washing your hands  Otherwise it is a very good design. Send a PM to Whiskeytech on Nasioc, he bought the one pictured above.

Got it in the mail last night and just wanted to share with everyone Chris' stunning handiwork.

He also custom made a boot ring thingymabobber according to spec. 'Turned' out quite nice.

Hey Chris, I like the white conical knob you made but I think I would want it in black for the WRX with the boot ring. Also can you carve out a spot on the top about the size of a quarter to put a shift pattern into? I have some stuff to make them. Just curious and if so PM me a price.

Or if you have a different idea with the cutout. I just like that shape as I currently have a Gredy and I dont like the sharp edges it has.

Once I get all my materials I will let you now how deep to make the indentation on the top. I kind of wat it to be the same depth as the stuff I am using that way it still has a nice round top to it. Scrapbook stores have these things called page pebbles
http://www.gelstuff.com/pagepebbles.html

that are little round clear dome shaped things. I have designed a shift pattern and it will stick to the bottom of this and then I will use double sided tape to stick it to the knob.

His NASIOC name is Big-E

" Big-E 06-19-2007, 02:40 PM
Ok, here's my feedback:

*Super easy to install
*Installed and let bake in sun for about an hour - the copolymer knob does not heat-up as stated on TiC's website
*Excellent finish - no chips, scratches, marks, etc and has a nice feel to it - solid w/o being "hard"
*Took about 15 minutes or so to get used to
*No audibile feedback through knob vis-a-vis the TiC/Kartboy shifter combo kit
*Very little tactile feedback - meaning no severe or other wild vibrations - you get just enough feedback to "feel" the gears
*I think that the price is right
*My father, who is not a car guy, likes the new addition
*If you're into cars, and you know who you are, you should definitely consider getting yourself this Copolymer WRX "piston" shifter knob
****If I could buy another subie or two, I would buy another one or two of these knobs****"

and he purchased one of my Copolymer WRX Tapered Piston knobs:

can you make one in white that is a copy of the sti "titanium" knob?
you know, the optional knob for the 6-speed.
https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/product_info.php?cPath=33_68&products_id=628

can it be done exactly like it?

Hey...have you made any shift knobs for the 4eat but with a ring at the base for a boot? I am replacing the center console with one from a manual so that there is a boot there to hide the 4eat. Here is what I am talking about:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=877164&highlight=4eat+short+shifter+mod

If I could avoid cutting the shaft it would be nice but I think the boot wont be big enough. Either way there is nothing for the boot to latch onto nor a knob that can screw onto the shaft without some modification. I would like something like the knob with the grooves but the piston could be easier to make fit. What do you think? PM me with your thoughts

Sorry, the copolymer material is only offered in white or black from my provider. You can try to paint it or dye it somehow, but I will not do this because it will probably mess up the material if it doesn't bond properly.

http://web.njit.edu/%7Ecdm4/ShiftKnobs/Extension2-c.JPG

That raised look is actually a two-piece design. The system is a simple double-screw setup where the aluminum rod screws right onto your shift lever, then the knob screws right onto the top of that.
Of course, you can use any subaru knob on this aluminum extension but it will probably not fit together flush and nice like the one shown. If you buy both the extension and the mating knob from me, I design them to fit together smoothly as shown.

Extension lever: $50
Black 2" Sphere knob: $65
TOTAL: $115 shipped (this is the discounted price when ordering both together)

You can also substitute another knob style for this one if you like. You can do an aluminum knob as well. The extension can be made with a lip on the bottom for the shift boot to snap onto also.
Got an idea? JUST ASK! :)

Bump! ^^

It can sit anywhere between 2.8" down (the total length of the tap for threading) or only an inch down depending on how far you want the hole drilled. I'd opt for a deeper hole because a shallow one means you put a torque moment on the knob when you push on the top end and only the bottom end is anchored with threads.

For weight, I can make it from aluminum, or put a brass thread insert into the copolymer so it will still be comfortable in hot/cold weather

I cannot do engravings, plus theres no certainty that the engraving will face the right direction when you screw it on the car. It might be upside down!

Pricing varies based on the type of knob and the options you want. PM me with your interests please!

do you make custom shift knobs for automatics? i like the look of the capsule one mentioned earlier. do you only make these out of aluminum and black polymer? i was wondering if one could be made in a similar color to the dark grey of the dashboard. also, is it possible to put a slight indentation/recess on the top of the knob, so say something like a tire valve cap could be placed on top and have it flush?

i was thinking it'd be really cool to have a sleek shifter like this with an indent on top to place a tire valve cap that has a subaru logo on it or something.

edit: nvm i saw earlier in this thread you do make automatic shift knobs. would one for an automatic be possible that looks like the cylinder connected to an upside down cone, like was posted earlier?

A lot of designs are possible. Can you sketch something in paint or a drawing program if you have one and email a sketch to me to help me better understand exactly what you want? With machining, I need something solid to go upon or it might not come out the way you want.

When you do the CAD drawings, can you JPEG them and send them? Its a lot simpler for me to open than a ProE or AutoCAD drawing.

I use a special method for the brass, its an interference screw assembly that will pretty much never come apart, even if you want it to. :)

Well I cannot put the leather around the side, but I can make something similar in Copolymer for you. Take a look at this design called the "GF4" style knob:
http://web.njit.edu/%7Ecdm4/ShiftKnobs/AcetalCopolymerKnobs/WRX%20GF4-d.JPG

That looks pretty good, what are the dimensions for that one?
Oh, and whats the weight like? I'd like something on the heavier side.

Dimenions:
Height: 3" including boot lip
Top diameter: 1.5"
Taper height: 1.5"
Rounded top
Weight in only copolymer: ~80g
Weight with brass insert: ~140g

Both styles are for the Subaru 5speeds

Ever hit any of your knobs with a light sandblast for grip?

Got the knob two days ago; it looks great!

unfortunately its a different thread than the aftermarket shifter in the car (who knew?)

so i'll post pics after its installed on a kartboy ss.

Ever hit any of your knobs with a light sandblast for grip?

Sandblasting/beadblasting would actually smooth the surface finish. That technique is used for smoothing and refinishing rough surfaces.
I sand down the aluminum knobs smooth then give them a brushed look with emery cloth. The copolymer knobs appear just as they are cut from the lathe tool, no post-finishing is needed.

I add some grooves around the knob as an option to increase grip, but roughing the surface will only make it look bad and feel strange.

Well I know it will keep its color under normal operating conditions, but if your hands get dirty alot it might pick up the grime. Acetone can be wiped on it to clean it off well.

So these dont get cold?

the copolymer really doesnt get cold enough to hurt or be uncomfortable like metal does. I've used the shifter when it was 30*F outside and the car was out all day and I didnt need gloves or anything. I used to hurt when I had one of my aluminum knobs in the car... my copolymer one is MUCH better.

Plus it doesnt heat up in the summer like metals, so you dont have to put a cloth over it or whatever

metal: :sadbanana:
copolymer:

So these dont get cold?

It gets cold, but nothing even close to a metal knob. I can palm it when my cars been outside all night and its below zero without cringing. Likewise, in the summer, it stays the same temperature almost all the time, which is the reason why I got one for my Mom's civic si, she gets burned from the metal one that comes in that car.

Look on previous pages in this thread to see pics of my aluminum offerings. I probably have some pics on my database that are not in this thread, and as always, customization is possible to your specification.

Would this fit a 99' 2.5RS (5spd) or could one be made?
And how much would it cost with the brass fitting inside?

Have you ever thought about making shift knobs with wood?

That would actually be really cool. You could get into the classic car market! I would love a nice burlwood knob for my upcoming VW beetle project!

WRXDriftR

I never tried using wood. I just dont think the market demand would be great enough to justify the time invested into getting it right. Plus I have a metal lathe, which I think can be used for wood, but there are some missing features.

Here's a blast from the past to really show what your capable of, the original GF4 shift knob (and quite possibly still the only one like it in existence?)

^I have sold several copolymer GF4 knobs like yours, but I believe there is only 1 other with the knurling on aluminum. It is a bit different than yours in precise dimensions but not too different. There are still named the GF4 style after you, but as a specialty order.

Ryan from SubieSport is actually getting one of them in copolymer from me, but with some customization.
