Subiefest2: Bigger & Better than Before
By Travis Geny, Subiesport Magazine (http://www.subiesport.com) Photos: Curtis Craiger & Yujiro Otsuki (http://www.yujirootsuki.com)

The day before the second annual Subiefest, the weather was clear, the skies blue and the air warm. It looked as if the event, presented by Subaru of America, Perrin Performance and Subiesport Magazine, would be one for the books, if only the weather would hold.

However, the weather report called for morning rain, and rain it did. From the moment the Time Attack competitors filed in the gates at Portland International Raceway in Portland, Ore., until late afternoon, a steady stream of water fell from the sky. Perfect Subaru weather.

The Ferrari club would have packed it in at the first drop, but the crowd of over 2,000 all-wheel drive flat-four crazies who filled the grandstands decided to pour it on.

Like Subiefest 1, Subiefest 2 featured a time attack and vendor area. Changed from the previous addition was an Autocross and a much more laid back car show.

In fact the car show was so laid back, it didn't really happen. The rain in its persistence kept washing away the competitor numbers making judging impossible. But this small bobble aside, the show went off without a hitch.

A 9:30 AM the field of Time Attack cars fired their engines and took position in the pits for a parade lap around the 12-turn 1.967 mile circuit.

As the cars rounded turn twelve, the Zero to Hero pace car peeled off, the green flag flew and the drivers dropped the hammer on the Time attack with a 20-minute warm-up session.

Immediately, the drivers knew that it would be a difficult day. With water pooling on the track the surface was beyond slick with several cars finding the grass early on to no incident.

"The track is very slick," said Street class driver Jeff Sponaugle.

"I even lost traction in the pace car on the parade lap," related Technical Editor Tim Bailey.

With the rain gushing forth, the Crawford Performance team erred on the side of caution. "We only wish we could have added to the festivities by running the Crawford Time Attack car. However, Mother Nature, and a few sponsors, had another agenda for us. No matter, we were more than happy to meet and talk with so many other enthusiasts. Who would have thought that we would actually be busier by NOT running our car in the Time Attack," said Chris Escamilla of Crawford.

However, as the morning wore on and the rain slackened, the drivers found the pace.

In between sessions, spectators were wowed by the sideways antics of D1 drifters, Team Orange, showing off their pair of GD Impreza RWD drift cars. Lead driver Kumakubo and teammate Tanaka, took to the track with zeal getting very sideways -- even in the wet. Despite reporting that the track was very slick and the driving dangerous, the team was determined to show the US audience what the D1 is all about.

This was the first time that D1 cars ever showed their stuff in theNorthwest. Another first was the unveiling of Tankaka's new 2007 Spec C drift car. Look for it in a future issue of Subiesport.

For the rabid cone dodger, an autocross was setup in the infield. While the autocross was open to non-Subarus, the vast majority of cars were of the AWD type.

Wandering around the paddock was none other than SRT ace Travis Pastrana. While Pastrana didn’t actively participate in the automotive debauchery on track, he did find time to take a ride in Kumakubo’s drift car, prompting him to exclaim, “I’ve got to get me one of these!”
Travis also found time to answer questions and sign autographs, look for him at the Oregon Trail rally on April 20th.

Back on track, the first two rounds of eliminations in both the street and Pro class whittled the competition to three cars in each class. With Phil Grawbow in the Element Tuning/World One/Prodrive 2006 STI, Navid Kahgi in a 2006 widebody STI running 315 series 18-inch Hoosiers sponsored by PDXTuning, and the GST retro rocket "version 1" Impreza piloted by Grand Am driver Brian Lock.

The street class saw some drama as PDXTuning's Jeff Sponaugle posted the third fastest time in class, only to limp off track with a blown differential before completing his second hot lap in the quarter finals. Unable to replace his differential, his slot was filled by Chris Lock in the Cobb Tuning widebody 2006 STI who was just a few tenths out of the top three.

As the Pro class took the track, the rain lifted and the track dried prompting some drivers to switch to dry rubber.

First out was class leader and favorite Brian Lock who turned a blistering 1:26.281lap time, followed by Navid Kahngi who could do no better than a 1:27.320. But it would be Phil Grabow for the repeat win with a 1:25.788 on his second lap which was enough to beat out Lock, Phil then followed with a 1:25.399 on the final lap just for good measure.

In the street class the stock STIs of Dan Hall and Eddie Nakato looked strong. But from the first lap, Chris Lock's widebody car demonstrated that with the rain gone, the wider rubber and bigger power of the Cobb car would be the deciding factor but only by a tenth of a second.

The show also saw the conclusion of the Zero to Hero Project 2.5RS with a Touge style battle between it and a "healthy" 2007 STI supplied by Subaru. Drivers were rally ace Nate Tennis and Subiesport Publisher Ryan Douthit, respectively.

The Subiesport RS was able to fend off the STI, thanks in part to a new C16 tune and well sorted suspension. Proving once again that it takes more than grunt and boost to take the checker when the course gets curvy.

As the sun literally fell on the day, those who stuck it out to the end were treated with some free swag, including several sets of suspension from Perrin Performance.

Plans are already being laid for next year. Expect more cars, more people, and maybe even a little sun. Complete coverage of the 2007 event, as well as an in-depth look at the new Team Orange Spec C drift car will appear in an upcoming issue of Subiesport Magazine.

Good review Ryan, but you may want to double this "PDXTuning's Jeff Sponaugle posted a second fastest time in class". He was actually third and his retirement let Chris advance.
No biggie, but when it was actually myself that was second fastest that round, I felt I should point it out.

Great event! I had a blast driving in the PRO class. Next year I'll definitely be bringing a little more horsepower. Any hints as to where and when the next event will be?

In the Subiefest review thread, some of the spectactors thought the time attack format we ran with one car on track at a time was a little boring. They actually liked the warmup session better. I suggest next year we do F1 style qualifying sessions (15 min sessions) where all cars are out on the track at once. Slower cars are dropped after each session. It's a little more exciting, too, because the leaders and cars on the "bubble" can change after each lap.

Good suggestion on the time attack.

Based on the sheer amount of work behind this event, and our even BIGGER plans for 2008 we are talking about returning to Portland International but with a completely different layout. The new format will be much better for spectators and will remove the need to ever close the roadcourse for car crossings. Also, the facility is getting a complete remodel this fall, so it should be even better next year (new asphalt, facilities, etc)

Our request for 2008 is a Friday (setup, practice, lapping and the biggest Subaru BBQ ever!) & Saturday in the summertime. We wont know for certain until this fall when the calendar is finalized. If the track can't provide us with a summer date, we'll have to look at a location further South.

Meanwhile, we are already planning a series of Gymkhana and Rallycross events in the NW for our new TV show (http://www.drivingsports.com) airing on channel 14 in Portland. Keep an eye out for specifics on those mini-events.

In regards to an F1 style qually, I like the idea but here's why it probably wouldn't happen.
You would have to have passing everywhere otherwise someone runs a good chance of not having a clean lap. Considering quite a few of the contestants (especially the Portland locals) wouldn't have any racing experience, just track day experience with limited passing, it wouldn't be a good mix.
Even if you ran street class / pro class seperately, the difference between lap times means people would still be catching others.

But yes, it would get boring to me watching a car go by every 90sec.

Good job Ryan on this event!, I know they'll just get better and better!

This is the same format we use in SCCA time trials. I understand what you're saying about clean laps, but that actually adds to the fun and strategy. As a competitor it's up to you to manage your track time effectively. If you get bunched up behind some cars, you can pull off and re-enter to get some space. Also, you don't have to go out right at the beginning of the session. You can wait a little later depending on the traffic. Another thing that could happen, is that you could set a killer fast lap right at the beginning. Then you can pull of into the hot pits and wait to see if someone beats it. For the subsequent sessions, we do grid up and go out according to the fastest cars from the previous sessions. It's conceivable that the fastest guy competing, doesn't make the next round because they weren't smart about managing their track time. You do want to set some car limit say 10 cars out on track at a time. For this year's Subiefest, having separate street and pro classes on track would have worked. Watch F1 qualifying and you'll see how it works. I actually think f1 qualifying is more exciting that the race itself. F1 will show a leader board. You can watch new leaders appear after each lap and see who is on the bubble to getting dropped.

Still sticking to that lie huh???

Hard to see in the grandstands, but the RS absolutely killed me on turns 4-8. Doesn't help that stock STI tires are practically slicks and are completely useless on a wet track. If it was dry I think the power advantage would have handed the STI the win... but as we all know, it was anything but dry.

When I passed the RS on our cool-down, it was only because he spun on turn 6. Oh, and the RS is now putting down 200+ to the wheels (without Nitrous... 260+ with).

Everywhere I go, I seen a lot of your complaining lately, is it that time of the month in Oregon...for bad wet weather? You seem to have something against everyone on this board.

awesome review, and the suggestions for next year get me even more excited. the biggest problem i had with subiefest (that wasnt mother nature) was the whole crossing the track thing, but it was still awesome. i cant wait for next year, and if PIR doesnt cut it, it looks like ill be driving to cali

Great write up, I want to see lots of pictures. I'm looking forward to my next issue of SubieSport. I missed out on this one due to the Las Vegas Grand Prix. I made plans to see the inaugural Champ Car race before finding out it coincided with Subiefest. Vegas was tons of fun and the sun was out but I wanted to be here for this event. I sure hope PIR will work for the next one. If it's between July and the end of Sept. there is a much better chance of it being dry. Hope everyone had a good time that attended.

As a spectator who drove up for Subiefest2, SCIC requests Laguna Seca or the California Speedway as alternates. Our group had a lot of fun even though the weather didn't agree with us. Too bad your camera guy didn't come with us to document the trip......perhaps next year?

agreeed

Arizona in the SWIC forums is coming up with some pretty terrific ideas aswell of either having subiefest LOCALLY here in SWIC, las vegas, or the (imo lol) greatest idea of it being in SOCAL.
but considering it's mostly an Arizona forum they are very partial to it being in Az due to the gatherings of Flat4LV and the poop ton of subes in SCIC.
good thinking too, because it'll never rain lol
