View Full Version : Anyone running Stage 2 with SPt Intake?

I have this intake and I don't really want to give it up to go back to the big stock box. I know Cobb says not to use an aftermarket intake, but is it that big of a difference where it will really hurt performance, or cause mechanical problems?

it wont do ****. i was just reading someones thread on the cobb tuning forums. on how he is running stage 2 with it and got it dynoed and it neither hurt or increased the performance it was virtually the same as the stock air box. the only thin is it ran a tiny bit leaner but didn't effect performance. besides i'm running stage 1 with it and its perfectly fine. don't worry you'll be safe.

Good. It's designed to run on a stock motor no problem, so I couldn't see how it will hurt on a very slightly modified motor.

IMO, not worth it, put your money elsewhere...leave the stock box..

The car ran rich with the SPT intake, which is also my observation as well. Running rich is not going to help power output. Either tune it or wait for the ECU to adjust the long term fuel trim.

05 forester stage II, all cobb with spt intake, runs great, makes a nice whoosh sound!

We've finally had some time to do more testing ourselves, and have come to the same conclusion.

At least with the current SPT Intakes available on the current cars, they are safe to use with our Stage 1/2 mapping on the AccessPORT. If anything, we'll see the cars run just slightly richer (due to the smaller MAF housing ID on the SPT). This difference is minor on the Impreza model and a bit more significant on the Legacy model (at least the intake revision we have, I'm not aware of others).

Either way, it should be safe. We're in the process of updating our map notes as we're well aware Subaru dealerships have been doing a fine job of slapping these guys on as many cars sitting on their lot as possible. :)

Cheers,
Trey @ COBB

thanks for the info trey. people really have to stop knocking the spt intake. hopefully they'll read this and realize that its perfectly fine.

yeah, but most feel that a short ram on our cars is worthless anyway..i would just change the panel filter in the stock box and spend my money on suspension or somethin...

Yep....

I would think a protuner could squeeze some gains out of a short ram intake.

yeah but alot of dealers are putting them on the cars before people buy them not really giving you a choice. plus alot of people either get them for free or pay with subaru dollars. so the question is y not put it on. if it doesn't do any harm than y not. plus a good protuner can tune a few extra horses out of it.
but thats just 2 cents:rolleyes:

I had just the SPT intake on my '07 STI limited for the first 12k miles. (Since September) I always experienced the flutter/hesitation that other people have described as well as the 2007 problem of the car surging etc. I got the ECU update from Subaru the week it was released and that seemed to help a bit with the driveability and the surge aspect.

I just ordered an AP 2 weeks ago and I was very uncertain as to whether I should run the SPT intake on it or not. I know from a performance aspect people really never noticed any benefits and after calling Cobb's techs several times to ask about it -- the responses were very mixed but basically said as Trey did -- that it should be fine, might run rich.

I got my AP in a week and a half ago and decided that I would take off my SPT intake and just run the AP with the stock intake. After driving the car for 12k miles WITH the SPT and now going to no SPT + adding the AP -- my review is that the car drives WAY better. Obviously there are power gains with adding the AP, but besides even the power gains -- the car just drives night and day compared to when I was running the normal updated Subaru ECU program with the SPT intake.

I called Cobb back and told them my thoughts and the tech I talked to said he thought the same thing. His opinion was that allow the AP might have helped my car run a little better in general -- he just didn't think the cars run well with the SPT intake. I really agree with this statement. In retrospect I think the car hesitated a lot more, accelerated a lot less smoothly and didn't seem to have the response it does without it.

I plan to drive for a few months like this and then put the SPT back on and see what I think.

I've got an SPT intake w/heatshield, my Cobb AP is being delivered today and my TBE comes late next week. I will post results when it's all together.

I am running the SPT intake/shield, and cat-back, with a Perrin catted downpipe. Stage 2 AP, Pro-tuned.

I ran the parts for a few days with Stage 2 OTS map before the pro-tune, but noticed the biggest difference after the tune.

the AP is an amazing difference anyways, i think you will be able to make your conclusions after you put the spt on after driving with the stock box with EM.

That depends on whether you like the look of a cleaner engine bay...

I would consider getting some "sort" of engine management, as the mods you have listed, I would be worried about protecting what's under the hood than your power #'s...
cobb=accessport

Yet another thread about the SPT intake...I would think that if one were to add the SPT, let the ECU learn, and then flash with the AP that there should be no issues...and the car should run better than with the stock airbox, but, either way, theres no way that SOA would sell a product that would hurt our cars, AND cost them money in the long run.

whats up guys. To add to this i drive a 07 wrx limited, I got the SPT intake w/spt heatshield, perrin lightweight crankshaft pully, fujita dp,spt cat back. Had that set up altogether for like month, car ran too rich. CEL came on and CRUISE CONTROL light was at a steady flash. Got the AP and loaded their Stage 2 map and she is a beast! Its been like 2 months now and cant wait to take it to a "pro" tuner for some more ponys.
