View Full Version : What would you do in my situation?

Work is going nicely, I should have a couple closings this month. If you drove my car which is basically stock other than suspension/wheels/sound, what would you do with say...about 4K to blow? I have a 1.8l awd currently. I know I could do a 2.5rs swap for under 1k EASILY. It will be a lot more tq than my motor currently has....which is REALLY sad. And the low end would be nice as well as opposed to a wrx motor. I will eventually do a wrx swap, but that may be another 5 or 6 months, I never know.

What would YOOOOOUUUUU do? And I basically want power...and turboing this motor is NOT an option. Ive been there and done that on my civic. Not unless I fully build an engine, and if I did, it would be a honda (sorry guys:banana: ).

Or should I buy a hatch civic and swap a B18 with all boltons possible and tune? Should get me around 200whp

Why not put this money towards a wrx motor/tranny swap in the future? Or maybe put it in a 6 speed fund?

i agree put it tward a wrx swap or you could buy a civic and swap a wrx motor into it that could be fun in a CRX no to mention evil

do what im doing. STI swap with 6 spd... oh wait you didnt want to spend 15k.... oh well. wrx swap it is then, 4k should about do it with parts but the labor is intense. i would try and find a compleate doner car and swap everything in including the dash. it looks very sweet. and the RSengine doesnt have thatmuch power so i wouldnt even concider it. justmy .02

Invest the money and make myself a promise. The 3rd 4K I have to blow in less than a year goes toward an STI downpayment. Good credit, 8-12K in the bank/brokerage, and 4K down will get you a super sweet deal at 3-4%.

True story. Why spend on spmething you said yourself you would want to upgrade soon anyways, when you could just save up?

I bought my 06 WRX limited with having good credit, traded in my old car, putting 5K down, and I got 0.0% for two years.

Do what you want, but you won't regreat getting a WRX. Talk about torque. Oh, and get the 06-07 version, they are 'rally' style, especially compaired to the mainstream appeal of the 08s. :alien:

Ok, I CAN NOT GET A NEW CAR! Which is the reason I have this car. I am paying 40 bucks more a month than my 05 Legacy GT, and I had full coverage on the LGT and liability only on my 93. If I want to spend over 1ooo a month on insurance (LIABILITY ONLY AND CAR HAS TO BE PAID OFF), than I would buy a new car.

I need a nice looking car, nice driving car, and reliable car for work. I am a Real Estate AGent and can not drive people around in my car looking how it is.

Sooooo, absolutely no new car right now. Maybe in 5 years. A swap would keep my car reliable for another 5 years if its a low mileage engine. I have 150,000 on mine right now and dont feel safe driving only 2 hrs away. Even though it drives great and never overheats....::knocks on wood::

I am getting quoted on a JDM WRX 2.0 swap (40,000 miles on it). Its WAAAY less than 4k for all parts, including dash/pedals/steering wheel. whole fron clip as well, ecu, wiring, obd2, etc...

150K is not alot for a subaru, just change the timing belt and you will be okay. I would worry if you have an auto though. Even IF the motor goes, they are dime a dozen and can be had for nothing.

You do realize, gas may go up to $4 a gallon and you will have to buy premium too.

USually, turbo cars are less reliable than NA, specially when the temp gets as high as it's supposed to this year.

If I were you, either buy another car, like an accord or just clean the "L" up to make it respectable. With teh way stuff is going, you "may" make ton of money with whats going on in the housing market right now.

Right now, I would focus on making as much money as possible right now, while the market is starting to pick up, before it gets slow again (for you).

Money, solves everything, then you can do an STI swap or whatever you want.

Im aware of the gas thing. I dealt with that last summer. And I think a new swapped turbo motor would be more reliable than mine. Timing belt was busted and replaced already (20-30k miles ago), fuel pump, suspension, brakes, spark plugs/wires, bunch of crap.

And my PS still leaks (not as bad as it used to, I just keep it full either way), and my oil pump is leaking. I hate dealing with timing belts/covers, heads, and oil pumps. So I dont really wanna do that. For 300, I could have a RS motor in my car. 60 more hp/tq, and not need to replace everything if I find a good motor. 300 bucks for 60tq Cheap NOTICEABLE power upgrade..

Now that you have all that done to your motor, now you know it's in good shape. Did the belt actually "break" to where the motor stopped? If not, then you are fine.

Is it the pump or the rack that leaks? I got a spare pump and rack on teh side of the house.

Doing an RS motor might be a good idea, but, are you gonna use the DOHC heads? It might be better, just to find a really good short block and retain the factory setup.

Since you did a bunch of maintenance, you might as well drive it, since you know you won't have to do any of it for awhile. Fix the leaks, or just deal with them untill you get ready to buy another car.

Obviously, it's your money and your choice as to what you will do with it. I know your "L" is not exactly what you want and that throwing some money at it will make it better. Whatever you decide, just be careful to think longterm and what will get you there. You may end up with a car that doesn't run and you don't want to finish and not be able to get near the amount of money you put into it, just like the many others out there.

Which is why I am getting quotes from Mynes. They should get it running nicely for me, or I am not paying ****. If I dont get a different engine that runs good, they better fix it. They have checked the motor out very well supposedly, fired it up, etc, compression tests, etc. SO Im not worried about that engine/tranny. SHould run good, especially with them doing the work if I get a good enough deal.

I figure if I cant get a good enough deal on labor, than I will just paint my car, swap my interior, and do some more suspension/replace my bent control arms, and some other crap.

You wouldnt want to rely on this engine if you were in my situation. Too many leaks, no a/c, oil everywhere, fill it up every 1000 miles with oil, blah blah blah. I want a new freakin engine.

The only work I had done since I owned the car was:
-Fuel pump (Subaru dealership....)
-Spark plugs/wires (a shop owed us money and did it for me)
-Suspension (upgraded, works with swap)
-Brakes (Brembo rotors/EBC pads)
-front axles (same shop owed money and did it for me)

Plus with over 1500 into this car already the suspension and brakes are good. another 4k into the engine, and it will be ok. Or....swap
