View Full Version : stuck on swap!!
siubaru 05-23-2007, 06:09 AM I had a full 06 sti swap into my 04 wrx and the shop I took my car to thought they could do it but soon found out that the engine harness doesn't match the cabin harness and now im stuck with an unfinish car. I got everything in the car already; engine, trans, suspension, but just need the wiring done. If someone can give me any advice will sure appreciate it. Im missing the sti cabin harness, but still have the ecu. I was told by someone that the wrx cabin harness can be modified to fit the sti engine harness, is this true? If anyone could shed some light my way, thankyou very much!
A: in a subaru there is no such thing as a cabin harness or engine harness there is only the main body harness
B: to complete the swap you speak of you need to swap in the whole 06 sti harness and relevant modules(ie imobilizer/hvac/dccd) into the 04
and you will need an original key
basicly you got screwed
to solve it
get the all the stuff behind the 06 sti dash
pull dashes
swap harness /modules
find dealer willing to program a key to the 06 ecu
prepare a law suit against shop for additional costs incurred
i don't think you will be able to modify the 04 harness to the point of making this work
Brydon 05-23-2007, 09:19 AM At this point I would just use your stock harness and make a holder for the cam sensor. Sounds like an expensive adventure for a ej257.:)
LENNYKIRK 05-23-2007, 11:31 AM I have a 04 sti main harness, DCCD box and ABS pump, I can sale you.
You need to get a drive by wire gas pedal and ECU for an 04 STi.The 04 is the closest to your wiring, the drive by wire, AVCS, and DCCD are the things that are different. 04 STis did not have the imobilizer.

Rabidbyte 05-23-2007, 11:34 AM Your big hurtle is the immobilizer, like Jaxx states in his post. You need the Key, Halo, matching ECU, and matching immobilizer.
1) Open an account in techinfo.subaru.com and download the wiring PDF files from your 04 WRX and the 06 STi. Study them really well and see what you have and what you’re missing. This can also help the shop finish what they started.
2) Call your shop, tell them that they started a project and they need to finish it, or refund you partial of the money for not completing it or you will smear their good name on the Subaru forums. That should get a response from them.
3) Call a guy I know by the name of Frank (586-615-7455), he might have some of the extra parts you need laying. Most likely he won’t but it's worth a shot to ask.
4) Call the guys at http://www.garagetuning.com or http://www.eastcoastswappers.com. They might be able to help, but they don't like working with chopped up harnesses. See what they can do.
LENNYKIRK has a good suggestion also. 04STi wiring and ECU might be another route to take.
:furious: I hate hearing about shops with poor workmanship and bad customer service. I hope all comes out good for you. Keep the thread updated on the progress.

I cant imagine a shop that just starts transferring parts as if it is just going to plug in and run... is this a honda service station? best bet now i think is following LENNYKIRK's post and find yourself an O4sti ECU.. i've got an V8 sti ecu for sale but its jdm 2.0l so no go.. good luck on your quest..it's gonna be a long one.

siubaru 05-23-2007, 04:31 PM thanks everyone for your quick response, and yes I was dumb enough to take it to a honda shop, but at first the guy seems like he new was he was talking about and getting himself into. My fault should of found a suby speacilist, anyways , whats this key that jaxx talks about, and what's it's purpose. first time I've heard of it. cause I found someone with an 06 main harness that's behind the dash but a little problem some of the wires are cut up, but all there. Is this worth getting?
nope and you need more than the harness you need everything
you need to pull the 04 dash/harness/heaterbox out and swap in the 06 equivalents as the 06 has the auto climate control
key you need an original key the 06 has an imobilizer .. the key serial is programed into the ecu ... you need a dealer tool to add new keys or the car won't start .. most dealers won't do this ..
i hope they didn't charge you allot for swapping the mechanical bits .. it is only a days worth of work
honestly the fastest path to a running car would be to keep the 06 running gear (tranny/suspension) and put the 04 engine back in ..
the dccd won't work and depending on how much they swapped the abs will be suspect
the 06 dccd has as many wires as my entire engine does
you my friend are in for a world of hurt
siubaru 05-24-2007, 03:58 AM I found some really good people down near where im at, called gstmotorsports and they are kind enough to agree to help me take a look at it. They are in fact the suby experts and I should of done my research thourghly before hand and had it sent to them, but luckly they are kind enough to help me out, but we'll see what happens. If worst comes to worst I'll just do what Jax said and put the old motor back in. But it sure be nice to have an sti. oh, and I paid 850 for the engine and tranny swap and Im sure hoping everything is where it's suppose to be.
gst is getting a very good rep, when you are at their shop take aloko at their time attack car while you are there
850 isn't too bad ~10 hrs of work
siubaru 05-25-2007, 03:40 AM I definetly will check that car out; and gst is so cool they even offered to come to my house and check out my car and pick it up for me, how cool is that. Now that's what I call customer service. I be sure to keep posted.
