View Full Version : Race Fuel, where to buy
dwaynesti 06-18-2007, 06:45 PM Does anyone run race fuel in their cars?
Where can you get it locally.
Ideally I would like to be able to run 96-97 octane, the only place I can find that sells race fuel is out in Mission...Too far
jstbstn 06-18-2007, 06:49 PM Kinetic Motorsport in port kells has race fuel there.

werd.
They have it by the 5 gallon drum, but expect to pay around $5 (or so) per liter.
for the record, the STi loves their 108 octane.
;)

I am considering it, I have a couple cars, that I use for work, with better mpg
the sti is more a weekend/fun car. I only drive it 300-400km a month
So I was thinking of maybe going slightly over 94 octane permanent
and getting tuned for it of course.
This sounds like a job for switchable maps.
One for 91 octane (You never know when you may have to.....) and another for when you're running the high test stuff.
Personally I'd hate to commit to a high boost map as my only choice.

I don't think avgas is that good of an idea. Running 86 avgas is just like running regular mogas. Running anything else will basically harm our beloved subies with lead content. Remember, Running any avgas with octane level 100 or higher means there are lead contents in their gasoline. And I'm not too sure if our cars can handle the lead...
WhistlerRally 06-19-2007, 03:17 AM Some subies run Avgas in the NZ rally championship - but they still allow leaded gasoline down there, and I'm sure the race engines are tuned for it too.

But I thought there is a law that prevents road users from using leaded gasoline for their vehicles on public roads... Wouldn't it make it illegal to do so?
WhistlerRally 06-19-2007, 12:34 PM Probably here in Canada, yeah.
Spooled 06-19-2007, 03:22 PM also, if you have cats, leaded gas can destroy them.

Spooled 06-19-2007, 08:55 PM haha, maybe not destroy, but can cause them to fail. my friend ran c16 in his car for awhile with a catted downpipe, and eventually it caused his catalytic converter to fail. just a heads up since i know a lot of people run catted systems on these boards.
r!az
You can't run leaded gas in a Subaru. They use sensors that would be destroyed by leaded gas...it is BAD. Use 100-104 Octane, readily available, not THAT expensive if you are only going through a tank of gas every month, especially if you buy a drum.
jstbstn 06-20-2007, 02:49 AM what sensors besides O2 and possibly EGT sensors would be affected by leaded gas???
you can run leaded gas...
if you have a standalone engine management system and dont use any sensors that will die from it (or replace them regularly)... and enjoy dealing with a whole bunch of crappy side effects.
the 02 is the only real one that matters to you street car guys (and cats). But the car NEEDS IT to run. The leaded gas does other nice things like foul plugs, kill any other extra sensors you might have, and generally be illegal as well.
FWIW we have been running race gas FOR YEARS on subarus both leaded and unleaded (we stopped using leaded in one of the cars back in 04 when the rally rules banned it), and despite what some people do on NASIOC and say that its "not a problem, we do it all the time" the reality is that the BEST thing and SMARTEST thing to do is to run a QUALITY unleaded race gas and there are only 2 worth using and I can tell you (without having to delve into the BS about why "because someone with nasioc member number lower than yours said its ok") that there are very few brands worth getting (all the others have "side effects").
And yes, depending on how much you buy it WILL be like $5 a litre (I think we charge 4 something but tora would know).
And yes, people who like to 'make big dumb dyno numbers with no basis to reality' do run C-16. But its stupid on these cars if you know what it does to them. Run a quality unleaded race gas, and you can run it for thousands of miles. We just sold a car with stock sensors that has over 50000km purely on this type of quality race gas. Never had a drop of anything else. You can put VP 103 or Sunoco GT+ 104 into the cars all day long, no problems. The big gains start with 103 and up, anything less is a waste of time considering the cost difference between GT(100) and either GT+ or VP103. VP is banned in some series because it has MTBE. With VP 109 your car WILL NOT DET no matter what the timing is (almost)... some guys even over time the cars and they make less power (but still dont det).
We even have some highly oxygenated (not retail) custom blends (which are illegal in most racing series) but also make "silly dyno numbers"... again, not for use on the street.
Why you would want "96" is beyond me, you can get equivalent performance to that with a bottle of toluene... or your favorite additive.
NeilF 06-20-2007, 04:39 PM I also wasn't sure the point of running 96-97 octane?
that would be like 40 litres of 94 mixed with 20 litres of 103?
60 litres of 94 would cost around $75
40 litres of 94 and 20 litres of 103 (at $5 a litre?) would cost $150 a tank
$75 a tank extra...$900 a year (if you just go through 1 tank a month)
for an extra 10-15 hp maybe if tuned for it.
seems $900 could be better spent, or 5 years down the line $4500 saved in fuel could really be used more wisely?
Now a map for vp103 for a day at the track, sounds like fun!
jstbstn 06-20-2007, 04:40 PM So do you think that the VP109 is a good gas to run for a race map then Pat? Is there anything negative to this MTBE that you speak of and what is it?
its toxic to living things
