Hi, I'm interested in an commute car that I can play around with. I don't need great horsepower so I think I am going to leave the WRXs and STIs out. I really like how the older imprezas are coupes, but i have questions for those of you that have experience with it. I will probably do little mods here and there. How reliable are subarus and how reliable would a 01 (probably with 60k miles+) be. Also, the mpg on the N/A shouldn't be too bad right?
I've seen some people talk about legacys too, which ones do people usually have?
thanks

I've got an 01 2.5rs and I love it. I bought mine with 32k miles on it last year and I havn't had any problems. It has enough power to give you a speed fix when you need it. Over all subarus in general are very reliable. If you take care of you car and treat it well theres no reason it couldn't last well over 200k. My gf's legacy wagon had 240k miles on it before it died.

I have an '01 RS coupe with approx 130k on it right now. Bought it with 120k on it and I've had no problems what so ever. I bought the car from the original owner who ran Mobil1 in it since 5000 miles. These cars are very reliable as long as you keep up on the normal preventative maintanence. One thing to look out for when checking out a 98-01 is rear wheel bearings. They have a tendency to go out.
I coulnd't be happier with the car. Although it took me almost 2 years to find one that I would be happy with.

k... my whole family drives subarus, mainly imprezas. they are the most reliable, they can give a very good speed fix, and they look great. FYI, my impreza is a 1995 2.2L, not exactly what your looking into but, i have never had a problem with this car, and i beat the **** out of it, it takes it quite well. 197315miles and still rollen strong!

watch out for rear wheel bearings on the 98-01 rs. they start to go bad at around 80-90k miles. and they're roughly $350-450 each to replace if you go to a dealer or a shop.
with that said, they're great cars. i own one. i love it. nothing beats the looks. for a daily driver they're great and get great gas mileage. i got i think 370 miles to a tank before i swapped. this was a 2000 rs.
if you get a base model impreza L then you could probably squeeze more mpg's out of that, but they have less power (1.8 or 2.2 L depending on year and trim level).
and, of course if you want to make it fast and reliable you could always do a motor swap ;)

assuming you live in nj, you will not pass emissions, depending on what year jdm ej20 you're looking at. there are many variations since they were made 1993-present. anything before 2000 was obdI.
i don't know who they are. use jhot, as i've had great experiences with them, or fourstarmotorsports.

Uhmm I thought MY 96 was the start of OBDII for the Impreza and the rest of the Subaru line-up.
