View Full Version : Throttle hesitation after cleaning air filter

so i cleaned my short ram air filter with a k&n recharge kit, and afterwards i noticed my car was kind of hesitating during normal acceleration. like, it feels like the throttle is being cut off very shortly at random intervals, and it feels worst between 2 and 3k rpm.

prior to this i also hosed and scrubbed the engine area a bit, but it wasnt hot. i tried to look it up in other threads, i read that a bad clutch can cause hesitation. my clutch acts weird sometimes. while engaging from a dead stop, i pretty much have to ride the clutch to get it into first, or else if i release it quicker it will cause the car to violently shake before it catches, and this is usually goes away after the car warms up. is my clutch going bad? or is it the air filter? or something else...

my car is a 2002, 62k miles.

thx for your help in advance

too much oil on the filter, if you are lucky you might be able to clean the MAF. if not, time for a new one. lots of people do not recommend oiled air filters anymore for this very reason, LOTS of trashed MAF sensors.

AWD driveline and the clutch-judder problem in '02's explains your need to ride the clutch from a stop. You may have over-oiled your K&N which would explain the hesitation (oil restricting the airflow and maybe partially fouling your MAF sensor).

take the MAF out of the car and put it in a big ziplock bag---pour in some rubbing alcohol----seal bag---shake gently......pour out alky, and pour in fresh....repeat gentle shaking......remove MAF from bag and discard bag and alky.....let MAF air dry.

clean air filter per directions---LET DRY overnight....re-oil using as little oil as possible to cover the filter.

reinstall it all an see what happens

any recomendations on what kind of alcohol? i got that same problem after using MAF cleaner and replacing my stok intake with TrueFlow Air filter with the cobb intake and the MAF cleaner spray.

there are many kinds of isopropyl alcohols, my real question was if 70% is good enoughs or 90% was required

i read on another thread this problem is a myth, as this video shows

http://videos.streetfire.net/video/eb3047b2-3cb0-4197-b0d7-987e01799b19.htm

what could be another cause if my maf isn't the culprit?

This is not a myth. I have worked in many different dealerships for a couple of different manufacturers and have seen it many times. The amount of oil it takes to contaminate a MAF is so minimal that it would not show up in that stupid little display that they had. The sensor portion of the MAF is only a very thin wire that is heated. Also do you know how much buisness K&N would lose if a "REP" admitted this can happen. I'm not bashing K&N they are good filters, But not cleaned and oiled properly It can happen. It also depends on the style of intake and how close the filter is to the MAF. If cleaning it does not work try a new one.
