View Full Version : X Games 13: Rally Car Super Special!
ricochet 08-05-2007, 03:50 PM http://mag.subiesport.com/images/stories/News/said_qualifying_jump.jpg
X Games 13 Rally Car Racing is now history. The course layout was new this year, and featured a massive 70-foot crossover jump. This new design, combined with elimination-style racing turned up the action for both the sell-out stadium as well as the 4-million homes tuning in to ABC/ESPN's coverage of The Games.
Look for ESPN and ABC sports recaps later this week. Or, check out the live Subiesport event blog (http://mag.subiesport.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=117&Itemid=57) (*spoiler alert*) from Ryan Douthit with a play-by-play of the action as seen from the Press Box. Complete coverage, along with interviews with Colin McRae, Boris Said, Travis Pastrana, Ken Block, Tanner Foust, Matt Iorio and many others will appear in the next issue of Subiesport Magazine (http://www.subiesport.com).

I know the finals will be on TV (ABC) later today. (3pm PST?) Check local listings. Not sure about qualifying. From the stadium we see commercials and interviews on the big screen as though it's live, but that doesn't mean anything. Anyone confirm?
Snow Drift 08-05-2007, 04:47 PM It's on now. put on ABC.
I just saw the DSG (Dent Sport Garage Evo 7)

2-imprez-u 08-05-2007, 06:04 PM That was friggin great!
Loved the finish b/w Pastrana and Faust and then Block and Faust.
scobaru 08-05-2007, 06:04 PM I didn't expect that at all!!! once mc rae jumped the barrier I figuared pastrana, block and tanner its was completely backwards!!!
good rally
LastResort 08-05-2007, 06:09 PM I had the results almost backwards from my guesses.
skydes 08-05-2007, 06:19 PM The Rally just finished, and I have to say it was an embarassment to the great sport of rallying around the world.
It was obvious from the start that the whole even was "canned", and none of the drivers were really taking it seriously. I can understand if they are trying to bring rallying to the masses but masquerading the sport as something it really isn't is not the way to do this.
Too many thing to list, but here are my main annoyances with the whole broadcast and event:
1. Co-driver is completely useless. Block's co-driver even stuck the notes out the window showing that basically they are dead weight.
2. The announcers. If you're trying to get people into rally, why the heck would you have two guys who don't know an ounce about the sport talking to millions of watchers out there?
3. The course. Just because you make a course that's half tarmac and half dirt, it doesn't mean it's automatically "Rally". One of the most important aspects of true rally racing is the element of surprise, which brings me back to the co-driver is useless point. This was more like a Rally-cross on steroids, not real rallying.
4. After Tanner wins the crew overreacts (probably by direction from the event organizers) by celebrating like they all just won the Lottery. One of the crew (maybe the chief) walks up to Tanner while he is still in the car, points at him and says "YOU, are the man!!!" . Tanner calls it the "highlight of his career". Yeah, for some reason I have a hard time believing that.
Anyway, that's all I have to say.

You have obviously never been to a wrc event  Its called a superspecial and most wrc events have them! "just not that big of a jump"
skydes 08-05-2007, 06:34 PM I've seen the superspecial events and I find those lame as well. Just crowd pleasers.
But the way this one was setup and broadcast was just bad.
LastResort 08-05-2007, 06:34 PM He stuck the notes out the window when he was already winning and weren't driving at 100%. They were showing off.
I thought the announcers did a respectable job. Yes the idiot reporter on the floor called the LCA a TCA, and referred to a swing bar.
Surprise? The WRC courses are predriven and copiously noted.
Why wouldn't a win on national TV be a big deal for a driver?
I'm sorry that you've got a terminal case of vaginitis.

They are predriven and noted but still they are not raced over and over, so there is still an element of surprise even if you have the best co-driver in the world.
LastResort 08-05-2007, 06:41 PM They are predriven and noted but still they are not raced over and over, so there is still an element of surprise even if you have the best co-driver in the world.Sure they are, stages are reused year after year after year. Hell, some stages are relatively infamous for their features.
skydes 08-05-2007, 06:44 PM Maybe I'm taking it to seriously...it just seemed to be more of a crowd-pleaser than a true competitive event. The other sports presented in the X-games actually involved some pretty true-spirited and intense competition which was lacking in the rally presentation so I was just disappointed.

You're right. But I was talking about in a single day of racing. But nevermind...
quadtard 08-05-2007, 06:54 PM Man, just be happy that its finally getting more exposure and appreciation. I think this has helped many people that know nothing about Subaru to finally see what they're about. I know I'm tired of people thinking I drive a "Lesbaru". Now some more people can see that Subarus are awesome cars, and that rally racing is an interesting sport.
LastResort 08-05-2007, 06:55 PM Maybe I'm taking it to seriously...it just seemed to be more of a crowd-pleaser than a true competitive event. The other sports presented in the X-games actually involved some pretty true-spirited and intense competition which was lacking in the rally presentation so I was just disappointed. Most of the Xgames sports are new, and still going through major changes. However, we do benifit from the advantage of being home to some of the worlds best skaters/BMX's/whatever. Rally is both old, and new in the xgames. Old in the sense that there is a huge international following that expects certain things, and new in that most of america is completely clueless. Plus, we have a very young group of rally drivers. Can you imagine what this would have been like with Petter, Gronholm, Hirvonen, and Leob?
quadtard 08-05-2007, 06:57 PM As far as how the X-Games have become more of an crowd-pleaser, I agree. I ride BMX and am always following what's going on, but I feel like the X-games and the Dew Sports Challenge are the worst "extreme" contests out there. The judging is completely sponsor and publicity biased, and it just keeps getting worse. But they do bring more exposure, so you gotta take the good with the bad.
NicFunkadelic 08-05-2007, 07:05 PM so who taped this? or found a torrent for it? I was out sailing today, totally forgot this was gonna be on. I hate feeling left out = (

If you've got such a grudge against it why do you watch it? Sure its getting pretty public, but thats what happens when extreme sports hit it big. Publicity follows sponsorships, fans, etc...
Yes the courses are much different than average rallies, but think of it as the difference between skateboarding street, and vert. If you won an X-games event wouldn't you flip out as well?
ps. If this whole event was "canned" and nobody was really "trying" than anybody could be a driver, and if the co-driver is in fact useless they wouldn't think twice about losing the extra weight if it wasn't that important.
darkenbinary 08-05-2007, 08:45 PM I thought it was a pretty good considering it was an X Games event. Anything that gives rally exposure in the US makes me happy. Of course the announcers weren't exactly rally experts...but how many rally announcers do we have in the U.S?? The girl explaining the parts off Block's car 't wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a sway bar and a piece of all thread in real life, but how's that any different than the media babes you see on the sideline at NFL games. I hope the X Games really helps bring more TV coverage of rally to the U.S.... even if the announcers do suck.
ampy549 08-05-2007, 08:56 PM someone post it on youtube already....;(
LastResort 08-05-2007, 08:58 PM I hope the X Games really helps bring more TV coverage of rally to the U.S.... even if the announcers do suck.True, I do have control of the mute button.
Staples 08-05-2007, 09:19 PM flippin sweet . . . love the changes
So Cal STI 08-05-2007, 09:52 PM I'm just glad to have a "Rally Super Special" that is in an urban area that's accessable. For those of us who've watched WRC on TV (and limited SCCA Rally due to lack of TV coverage or acessability to those channels), I'ts just VERY nice to *finaly* see a "Rally" of sorts. I've attended the last Rim of the World Rally (just Super Special Stage, again a lack of accessability and being a total NOOB ) and I'm very happy about the X-Games Rally. X-Games might not be perfect, but its "Rally" and its on Nationwide TV!
paktinat 08-05-2007, 10:12 PM Yes the idiot reporter on the floor called the LCA a TCA, and referred to a swing bar.
I thought she said swing bar, but wasn't sure.
They should have called the jump the EVO eater.
How embarrassing would it be to stall your launch on national TV like ACP did.
jmhubbard01 08-05-2007, 10:27 PM Subarucame out fantastically well in that super special on national TV X games deal. It was all very entertaining, except I wish Dent's ride could have made a better run at it. That really sucked for them.
That kind of publicity will prove to be a real positive for SOA. Now they just need to get that damn STI straight out.
And as far as the commentary goes - eye candy is just eye candy. I thought it was cute her describing the broken bits with her large !its.
ampy549 08-05-2007, 10:35 PM is it true that the 2 evos that entered, broke down on the first lap?
evo's FTMFL
C-grunt 08-05-2007, 10:40 PM I dont know the drivers.
Who won with what car and how did the Subies do?
jr4jc 08-05-2007, 10:41 PM RALLY @ X-games designed to be a crowd pleaser
novel idea huh!!!
x-games more like rallycross on steroid
YEA COOL!!!!!
criss cross course==way cool--autocrossers are discovering this concept- with good results.
subadus 08-05-2007, 10:41 PM Wild and very entertaining! Just didn't see the championship run though, sucks! Hopefully, I can go home before 12:30 am and not get called out to watch the replay.
JiveMasterT 08-06-2007, 12:17 AM Dammit. I need a TV. Any links to video clips yet?
mikee_7id 08-06-2007, 12:58 AM You can see the final here:

Click Launch Player,
Then Click on the Rally Final next to the video window that pops up!
Hope this helps.
If anyone finds the rest of the rally, please let me know!
dentsport 08-06-2007, 09:14 AM is it true that the 2 evos that entered, broke down on the first lap?
evo's FTMFL
Not exactly. The Ramana and the DSG EVO ended up placing 4th after Travis. A bittersweet end to a long week.
RexTexWagon 08-06-2007, 09:15 AM I got a great view out of it last night when I flipped it on. It looks like a damn blasty blast to do, an I dont care if its a "crowd pleaser" or not, those guys have tallent. I sure as hell couldnt do half that stuff as fast as they were taking it!
An the .1 sec diff finish was great, even if there was a DQ :(
LastResort 08-06-2007, 09:19 AM Not exactly. The Ramana and the DSG EVO ended up placing 4th after Travis. A bittersweet end to a long week.Don't take this fandboi bull**** to seriously. Most of us were bummed to see both the short landing, and the motor failure. :(
Carolinaguy99 08-06-2007, 10:15 AM there has got to be some sort of re-run, I just want to know when so I can TiVO it.....
jdbtxyz 08-06-2007, 11:24 AM That was awesome to watch! I loved it.
Deznuts05 08-06-2007, 01:37 PM 1. what a bummer! as much as I hate watching the golden boy win everything that DQ was BS!
2. what's wrong with hyped up rally-x or whatever you want to call it? Dude whatever espn or abc did it worked. A life time friend that always hated watching any motorsports he got hooked within the 1st 15seconds it took before the 70-ft jump. yea its not the same as what you'd find on Speed or whatever channel you get to see WRC but who cares?! I say the more Props the better it is for us not able to see WRC stuff.
3. haha and yes the tee-tease were nice touch... anyone else notice that sticker or whatever gripping for its life to say stuck on her tank-top?
4. What's the deal with Colin? Even my friend (same friend) noticed ok he rolled a car, gets out and Colin is laugh'n his butt off. Realy wanted to see Golden Boy vs Colin that my friends would have been great for both sides of the pond (POP Moto Star Vs Pop Rally Icon).
Ahh rant over... I wish I had Speed channel in South Philly... actually thinking about it Speed Channel stinks now as well its always freakin Nazz-car WTF! I think its time to move across the pond or up a few state to VT.
Rant really over now.
Deznuts05 08-06-2007, 01:38 PM oops forgot to mention if youre looking for re-run check espn2 this weeknight; they usually reply them just as bad as MTV replays the real world.

I think Colin does the xgames rallies for the fans. Obviously he doesn't feel the same amount of pressure as say...competing for a WRC title. :D
Fasttrak 08-06-2007, 08:05 PM 1. what a bummer! as much as I hate watching the golden boy win everything that DQ was BS!
I don't get this sentiment at all.
How does crossing the lane so that he finished in his opponents lane sound fair? He basicly body blocked his competition from passing the finish line first and deservedly was dq for it..
(I loved it myself, he was fighting hard to win and was behind going to that final turn and just a bit heavy on the gas and light on the brake.)

I noticed Crawford Performance decals on the fenders.

no pressure for coilin, he's been really close to winning this year and last year..but come'on, a win at the x games does nothing for colin, he OWNS in WRC and none of these other guys will come close to matching the career colin has had. that said, everyone in the x-games rally are SUPER talented, way beyond the regular rally driver...tanner is nasty, props for the win ! I'm kinda glad he beat out travis, as I don't know why everyone here kisses is butt ?

Nothing mechanical about this failure - other than all the parts that broke because of the slow speed at take off!
We had a great time in Southern Ca - the weather was unreal - the fans and people were awesome - Winter X anyone?

Sounds like a good point... I didn't see that race, but from watching the final on the EXPN site, it looks like it could be very easy to cross over into the oponents side. both the racers in the final would have crossed over if they weren't right next to each other to stop the sideways momentum. The finishline was so close to that last turn it looks like it was really hard to fight the urge to just blast it full throttle around that turn and past the finish... but as most of us know, blasting it on dirt during a hard angled turn means there is some serious drift involved, which is what consequently DQ'd Travis... He'll be hungry for another opportunity next year!

I can understand the rivalry between evos and sti's, but some of this is just senseless flaming.. There's nothing wrong with evo's imo, they're good cars... That was a driver mistake on the short jump...
DSM_Outback 08-19-2007, 02:22 PM Not at all, I love Evos.
