After doing alot of searching and reading the faq i still can't decide what to get. I have an 06 wrx and was going to buy the kaixen kit for the stock projectors, but i'm not sure if that is the best choice. Some people recomend retrofits but i believe that'll run too expensive and i read something about D2S bulbs and adapter rings as well...so can someone school me on what would be the best option without dishing out too much money?

I would recommend to wait a few more months and save money. The pay-off in retrofitting HID projectors into your housings is worth it in the long run. I found everything needed on e-bay to do the retrofit for under $250. You could always just have the lens replaced on your stock projectors to TSX projector lenses to clean up the light output.

go with some matsu****a ballast (from 350z, altima, g35's) they are identical to the sti ballast.

buy some d2s bulbs.

buy h7 adapter for the d2s bulb.

shave the bulb's base to the shape of the h7 adapter.
(instrucitons are included with the adapter most of the time)

the ballast mounts to the headlights on the bottome side.
feed the ignitor inside the headlight.

plug in the ballast to the oem low beam circuit (oem can handle the power)

install bulb, and done !
