No worries, Japan also gets the ugly WRX, they just try to distract people from its looks by renaming it the S-GT.

The rumor is that they will announce a "tuned by STI" Legacy and Outback at SEMA in November, to be sold sometime in spring '08. I was at my dealer two weekends ago, and they had a Forester Sport with STI spoiler, STI front lip, and STI wheels. Sales manager said it's a precursor to a Forester STI, so they might announce that at SEMA too.

After all, didn't Mr. Ishi-tobi say they wanted to make an STI trim level for every model line? I can't wait!

I just sent a letter to SOA regarding the "tuned by STI" rumor, thanking them for listening. I also put in a request for the McIntosh stereo system, as well as a turbo H6 for the future. I know it's not likely, but if we keep bugging them, and the "tuned by STI" models sell well, we might get it someday.

So let's make sure that the STI models that come our way sell well. Get your checkbooks ready.

I wonder if they'll limit us to 600 copies of each STI model like Japan and Australia? Well, I suppose for the first year it makes sense. They limited the Spec.B for the first year, then made it a regular production model, though I would guess that the STI models (aside from the Impreza) will remain limited in number to guarantee their exclusivity.

The suspense is killing me. I can't wait 'til SEMA to see what we actually get.

A tuned by STI is not hardcore enough to be called an STI. A WRX STI has a lot of different engine parts than a WRX. A liberty tuned by STI just has a few small STI engine parts.

In Australia we also have a Tuned by STI WRX aswell as the Liberty GT Tuned by STI. Which i own

Well, we are excited about it since we don't have those models here in the US. A hot legacy other than the spec-B, which lacks much of what I'd look for for the price, would lever me right out of my WRX, especially a STI, even 'tuned by' model. Let the Impreza platform hold the true STI name. Give us this legacy here.

Yeah, it bugs me too, as I feel it's a misnomer. The "tuned by STI" models at first got no engine tuning whatsoever. It was all just bolt-on suspension parts, i.e.: springs, sway bars, strut tower brace, muffler tips, spoiler and front lip, Brembo brakes, and a few other pieces. It was only recently that they added an ECU tune into the mix (thankfully).

So, rather than "tuned by STI" it should have been called "STI bolt-on-parts" Legacy, but that just didn't have the same ring to it.

At least now there's an ECU tune to fit the name.

With the Impreza, the STI model is a completely different animal from the Impreza and WRX, so it's deserving of being called a true STI. With the Legacy, it's just bolt-on parts, so instead of calling it a true STI, they call it "tuned by STI".

It'll do for now...

I will buy a USDM wagon version of this. Heck, I would have bought one in Nov '04 when I bought my LGT wagon and proceeded to add almost the same parts.

This car is what is needed to get me back into the Subaru fold. The fact that SOA axed the wagon altogether doesn't bode well.

I doubt it. If other markets are anything to go by, the tuned by STI will be a limited edition (maybe 600 units), while the Spec.B is a regular production model. Also, since it appears that the tuned by STI is a trim level on top of the Spec.B, it would be hard to pull the Spec.B out from under it. I would guess they will keep the Spec.B along with the tuned by STI to help broaden the use of its 6MT, which doesn't appear in any other models (being different from the Impreza STI 6MT).

Just my 2 cents.

Be careful with your spelling. There's a big difference between Macintosh and McIntosh.

Macintosh: apples (that you eat) and Apple computers.
McIntosh: high-end stereo systems.

Apple offers Macintosh worldwide.
Subaru offers McIntosh as an option in Japan and Australia.

For some reason, SOA seems to think we don't want McIntosh, but we do, and I've sent them a letter telling them so. Hopefully they'll listen.

If this car came to the US as a wagon, I'd be losing a lot of money on the sale of my GTI.

Though, we'll likely be picking up a 3rd car in 2 years... this would make a most excellent addition.

Here are a couple of articles that have quotes by Tomohiro Ishi-tobi (I have to put the dash, or Nasioc's word filter blocks out the middle of his last name).

From November 2006:
http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061107/FREE/61106008/1065

“We are discussing it internally,” confirmed Tomohiro I****obi, Subaru vice president of product planning, in an interview at SEMA. “We feel the market is ready.”

From January 2007:
http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070123/FREE/70122008/1010/FREE
At the recent Detroit auto show, Subaru's product planning vice president Tomohiro I****obi reassured us that plans are in the works to widen STI's U.S. offerings beyond the Impreza line.

^^^better sales numbers than we had with the regular LGT wagon. They didn't sell that well, though they didn't get the fairest of chances.

I've been seeing many more Legacy ads in magazines lately, so I'm hoping that will generate some good sales. I just saw a 3.0R ad on the inside back cover of the new Popular Mechanics. I saw the same ad somewhere else recently too, though I don't recall where.

I don't recall ever seeing any wagon ads.

The Crocodile Dundee commercials did wonders for the Outback. They need to do something similar for the standard Legacy.

Oh, and Popular Mechanics included the new Tribeca in their crossover vehicle comparison. Rated it fifth out of six. Given the stats, it should have been first.

Their rating order:
1. Mazda CX-9
2. Hyundai Veracruz
3. Saturn Outlook XR
4. Toyota Highlander
5. Subaru Tribeca ('08)
6. Honda Pilot

Regarding the Tribeca: The sporty Subaru was one of the best-handling models in the test.... Next to the Mazda, the Subaru had the most talented footwork and posted high speeds in our handling tests. It was the easiest of the bunch to snake through the cones, and the most fun, too. On the street, all our testers were fans of the Subaru's poise.

The Tribeca did tie the Mazda for the second-quickest times, and beat all but the Highlander to 60 mph.

Lowest base price. (mid-pack as-tested price)
Second fastest 0-30 (behind Highlander).
Second fastest 0-60 (behind Highlander).
Tied with Mazda for second fastest quarter mile time (behind Highlander).
Second shortest braking 30-0 (behind Honda Pilot).
Shortest braking 60-0.
Second highest lateral acceleration (g's) (behind Mazda).
Fastest double lane change at 54.8 (second fastest was only 50.0).
Second fastest slalom (behind the Mazda).
Second best gas mileage (behind the Highlander)

Considering that in most tests it was best or second best, with only a few mid-pack ratings, should have put it on top. Maybe they were just too shocked at how well the Subaru did, so they couldn't imagine putting it at the top. Or maybe they just got too many advertising dollars from Mazda.

Yep. There's certainly nowhere in the US that has rain or lots of traffic - maybe the resident Canadians can comment. Any rain or traffic up there? ;)

As far as I know, the Impreza and Legacy sedans have never come with rear wipers outfitted in North America (at least certainly not in the last several years). The SVX did and the wagons still do.

I have the MY07 Liberty (Legacy) GT Spec B Tuned by STI after trading in MY06 WRX STI. The Liberty actually ****s all over the old WRX in my opinion. If you start prowling under the bonnet and under the body you will see that it actually equal if not superior in every way to the WRX.

STI is the tuning division for Subaru in Japan. Of course they bolt many of the parts to alter the WRX into an STI.

Brave man! Coming from the USA, I'd get confused about which side of the road to drive on. There would be chaos, confusion, and possibly collisions. I'm not sure you want that. I'd be happy just riding in it.

After thinking it through, the cost of the plane ticket alone would make a nice contribution towards getting my own STI, but I definitely appreciate the generous offer!

One of these years I'd love to come visit Oz (New Zealand too,... and Tasmania...), but the STI definitely comes first. My GT is paid off, so I'm just waiting 'til they bring the goods here.

Sold...if they actually brought it HERE. I was looking into buying a used/newer GT/Spec B and putting a hotter bumper/grill on her but after seeing that I might hafta hold out! SOA WAKEUP!!!

Flyinpig, did you take those pictures? If so, where? In NJ? Was that vehicle right-hand or left-hand drive?

Bring that car in a wagon to the states, and I might convince the lady a Subaru is the way to go...

Agreed! A legacy Wagon STI!

Argh! Quit teasing us! I was really hoping they were photos of a USDM test mule or pre-production model. Oh well.

This leaves me in quiet a perdiciment.

After my WRX being rear-ended a month ago, I don't know if I'm going to want to keep it. I've been thinking about just getting an LGT limited and doing upgrades. The front bumper/facia on that is 1000x hoter than the USDM one. Question is...can I hold on to my car until November to see what happens @ SEMA and after that...can I hold on to it until Spring of 2008. Hum, this presents problems.

That's funny, just yesterday I was thinking how nice a set of STI Limited, black Brembos would look on a Legacy GT.

Guess I was right. :D

Please make this car available for 2009 model year. Wife's getting an 08 Tribeca this fall so my new car is at least a year off now. Looks like I may be waiting that long anyway but this car would give Subaru a lock on my business for at least the next two years. Once the STI goes in a year or two it's going to be on to G37X (likely to be produced by then), S4, or Legacy STI (#1 choice should it come with a few more ponies then the GT)..... so subaru if you are listening make my decision easy.

I think Subaru may bring the Legacy wagons back, but we'll see. Sales of the Impreza hatch versions may help to dictate that.

If sales keep trending upwards, they'll bring more options. Options are good.

Do it, SOA... we'll buy it.

I too would buy this right up, especially if it were a wagon. I'd gladly go into a little more debt to drive it everyday. My 06 wagon would be gone in a heartbeat. I've already thought about trading it in if I could find a LGT 5MT at a dealer somewhere.

ditto. i'm working towards paying off my LGT and have the luxury of not having car payments, but if this came out, i'd keep paying just to drive this.

That looks pretty sharp. By the time i'm in the market for a new car, i think i'd be leaning towards this over the impreza sti. Plus, i may be too old for the regular sti anyway:(

If they don't hurry up and bring the STI models to the US, I might be tempted to move somewhere they do sell them, though it seems most places that do, drive on the wrong side of the road! :p UK, Japan, Australia,... :p

That's my thinking too: Tuned by STI for '08, full LSTI for '10. Then again, Aussie Dave says the Australian Liberty tuned by STI has same WHP as WRX STI. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the same to come to the US!

Yeah, sounds good. :) But by 2010, Legacy'll need a turbo 3.0 or 3.6 to compete in the HP wars.

I could visualize Subaru doing some good stuff with the 3.6. Not that they ever will, but they sure could!

Didn't they mention something in the press that in the future they'd add "more performance" to the 3.6L ? http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1256512&highlight=Tribeca+3.6L Read the very bottom of that WardsAuto.com article. It says that 3.6L Turbo has been discussed. For all I know, Subaru could be lying, but they have mentioned it. :)

I hope they're doing more than just discussing it! Since the engine is so similar to the 3.0, the work they already did on turbocharging that should carry over to the 3.6 engine without it having to be totally redesigned.

I wonder if a turbo H6 for the Tribeca will be announced at SEMA this year? The rumors of this bode well for it coming to the Legacy too.

Not sure if this deserves its own thread, so I'll post here.

Found a couple of photos, which was taken at a SWFC 'secret test' event in which Petter and other Subaru team members attended:

Notice the STI badge (not tuned by STI)
Also, the brakes..
Could it be a test car for the S402? Don't forget about the US market! :P

Wow, this needs its own thread right now. Those brakes appear to be 6pots?!?

Aside from the wheels and brakes, there appear to be no other visual differences between it and the "tuned by" model.

interesting legacy STI pics.... there IS a difference b/w the legacy STI and the tuned by STI... the Legacy STI is the REAL DEAL :D... i hope thats something that might be the 4 door STI that SoDealer was "hinting" at  especially for the U.S.

Seeing that:

1. The WRX STi comes with Si drive
2. The chassis is now the same

The Legacy STi would be quite easy to build, right?

And now I would like to go ahead and wish that they'd bring it over here...

WRX is on the Leg chassis. The Leg is rumored to get the Tribeca chassis; which is well needed if you ask me.
