View Full Version : Throttle body porting?
kupaq 01-11-2002, 08:09 PM Has anybody tried this mod yet? Results?
I am planning on taking mine out and putting it on a lathe....
I'll let you guys know how it goes at the meet.
KapaFool 01-11-2002, 10:04 PM We were gonna try that a few days ago when I had my intercooler off but we chickened out.
Resbum 01-12-2002, 01:31 PM I'm just getting into this so I'm probably wrong. Doesn't it mess with the computer(the tuning) by porting the TB like that.
I mean The computer is set to register a set volume of air going
through the TB. Doesn't it use the TB diameter in it's computations? Then it determines air/fuel mixture based on
that and the reading from the ox sensor.
I may be totally wrong. This is one of the problems you could encounter doing this on a 5.0L Ford. A very lean condition.
I've always been under the impression that the computer has to be rechipped or programable so that it takes in to account the different TB diameter.

you're not really increasing the volume of air, the bore at the throttle body stays the same. you would just be knocking off the leading edge to reduce turbulence.

Resbum 01-12-2002, 05:10 PM Kupaq, thanks for the clarification. I misunderstood what you were trying to do.
Since we're on the subject, is my thinking correct about someone "boring out" the TB without taking into account the electronics?
RawCode 01-12-2002, 07:11 PM I thought boring out was increasing the diameter of the TB thereby increasing the air flow...
RawCode
kupaq 01-12-2002, 08:15 PM The way I understand it is that only the MAF sensor is calibrated for the bore that is located at. Increasing the bore there would cause lean conditions, but not at the throttle body...that air is already metered.

Resbum 01-13-2002, 01:35 AM Kupaq- You're right. I was confusing the TB with the MAFS. Man, do I have some refreshing to do. Back in the 90's I was going to put a twin turbo 5.0L HO Ford in my '71 240Z(never came up with $4800). I bought several books on fuel injection and turbo charging and was pretty on top of everything. I guess you lose a lot when you don't use knowledge gained for seven years. Time to dust off those books and do some more reading. Thanks, Resbum
KapaFool 01-13-2002, 04:58 AM Enough of this useless bantering!! Start the Porting and report your findings!:alien:
RawCode 01-13-2002, 01:15 PM Port! Port! Port!
Done yet?
RawCode
kupaq 01-13-2002, 02:23 PM nope not yet.....Im still at work:(
I'll be home next monday. And I will try my darndest to get it done before the meet. :)

WRXnFX 01-14-2002, 04:14 AM Resbum - Here is the link to the mod. You can read all about it.
http://www.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=101949&highlight=throttle+body+porting
Tell us your results. I'm ready to try this too. Winslow
Resbum 01-14-2002, 11:39 AM Thanks Winslow, I'll go there as soon as I post this note.
Resbum 01-15-2002, 05:56 AM Winslow -that's a great thread you sent me to. By the time you weed through it, they've answered most ?'s. If I had my car now, I'd be out in the garage starting that mod over my morning coffee tomorrow AM. I don't have experience with forced induction but I've always port matched and "cleaned up" my intakes with Dremel tools. I've never been disappointed with the results. I would imagine that it's even more important with forced induction.
WRXnFX 01-15-2002, 07:21 AM If you ever get over to Kris' house, then you could do a detailed inspection under the hood. You'll find many pieces that are restrictive such as the turbo inlet hose, intercooler hoses, intake, and exhaust. I guess, that is with most designs from auto manufacturers. I'm hoping to do that to my car when I get some free time. Winslow
Resbum 01-15-2002, 03:50 PM ...that's the sound of my Dremel ready to do some "clean-up"!!!
One of the parts that has caught my eye is XS Engineerings "Power Intake". In the Jan 02 ,"Turbo and High-tech" magazine, on pg 42, they have the dyno results. 13.9hp gain, 300rpm lower(5684rpm) and 10.9lbs-ft torque gain, same rpm(4126rpm). It's only $185. It also made another mags list of the top ten products for 2001, but I can't remember which.
I can't remember where I read it, but the K&N air filter is good for about another 10 ponies. For approximately $225 and some time to "clean up" restrictions to air flow the results would probably be outstanding. :D
SQUAD_907 01-15-2002, 06:39 PM i'll bring my dremel to the meeting and maybe resbum can do some "cleaning" to my car! every little bit helps!:D
KapaFool 01-15-2002, 11:06 PM Kris you suck and you too Winslow!! I told you guys that before but no you guys had to make excuses. The intercooler was off the car.
WRXnFX 01-16-2002, 03:54 PM Kapafool: Hey, it's not that I didn't want to do it! It was the amount of time it would take to do it correctly.
Resbum: The XS engineering intake is a really nice setup. The MRT CAI intake system has similar performance gains and uses a K&N intake. I believe that most of the performance gains in a CAI system come from the type of filter used.
WHTDVL wants to do this tonight if you have some time. Winslow
SQUAD_907 01-16-2002, 06:29 PM i wanna watch and see...

KapaFool 01-17-2002, 12:33 AM I gots a tool that might work!
Seriously I do, I was asking around at work on porting throttle bodies and somebody suggested to go to Napa and buy this thing.
whtdvl 01-17-2002, 12:44 AM I'm going to hack mine to bits tomorrow if anyone wants to join me.
WRXnFX 01-17-2002, 07:29 AM Eric, I want to see the tool. I was thinking of a good way to do it with a router but if this tool will work then I'm down. We'll practice on Ben's car. Winslow
Resbum 01-18-2002, 03:04 AM Eric & Winslow
Do you want to try it this weekend. I've got the garage(small), tools and a whole pack of Bratwurst that needs to be BBQ'd. More importantly the boss says she doesn't care. :) We do have something planned for Friday night and want to go X-country skiing at some point but not much else planned. Let me know.
KapaFool 01-18-2002, 03:30 AM I will be at the Beer and Barley Festival at the Egan with Holmes on Friday evening. We have a designated driver to drop us off and pick us up. Any takers to this, oh I almost forgot but it costs $25 to get in, but theres lots of beer to taste.
Resbum - that sounds good for the BBQ and mods, I am free all day Saturday and all day Monday. I don't know about Winslow and Ben though.
Resbum 01-18-2002, 03:37 AM Kapafool - Saturday would work but Monday would be great. My wife has to work Monday, so I wouldn't have to worry about spending time with her(I don't mean that in a bad way). She's been working like hell for the last three weeks and needs a break this weekend. If the others can't do it Monday, this weekend would work. She has already said ok.
KapaFool 01-18-2002, 03:40 AM How about both days? Call me Friday morn.:alien:
Resbum 01-18-2002, 03:42 AM OK (Is that a word?)
SQUAD_907 01-18-2002, 04:11 AM i wanna know how it turns out when u guys are done! :D

WRXnFX 01-18-2002, 07:00 AM Friday, I have class from 7 to noon then 5 to 9. Saturday, I have class at noon to 3. Sunday I'm free. Monday I have class at 5.
KapaFool 01-21-2002, 01:29 PM WHTDVL - Look at the thread that Winslow put in. There are some people there with sticking throttles. Very informative. I hope you dremeled the butterfly plate the right way.
whtdvl 01-22-2002, 03:27 AM Finished the throttle body porting last night. Now that I did it once, I could do it in less than 2 hours. It gave me noticeably more power over 5K. The only problem I ran into was that the throttle sticks in the closed position on occasion from idle. We took it back apart and everything looked good so hopefully it will set itself correct. If anyone wants help just let me know.
WRXnFX 01-22-2002, 06:24 AM I wonder how much a machine shop would do this for? Anyone else up for this mod? I think KapaFool's is next. Winslow
WRXnFX 01-22-2002, 07:25 AM I think we can fix the sticking throttle body problem. You know that black stuff you took off? I think we should replace it by making another seal around where the butterfly valve meets the throttle body. This should cure the sticking valve and solve the high idle. I think you can use the same stuff that I bought for the headlights. Take the valve back out and mask off the entire inside of the throttle body port except for an inch around the center where the valve contacts the throttle body. Squirt some of that RTV in there making sure to apply just enough RTV to create a super thin layer. If you apply too much then it will just rip off when the valve closes. Winslow
SQUAD_907 01-26-2002, 04:00 AM so is the sticking throttle body been fixed? just wondering how that mod went...the final outcome...
KapaFool 01-27-2002, 02:07 AM Somewhat fixed but being a passenger in the whtdvl mobile I can feel the difference at certain RPM. At first I wasn't sure but Ben said that at around 5000 rpm theres an extra oomph to it. Sure enough there was. If you are familiar with the VTEC in the Hondas it is almost similar. I am talking about GSR and Si, etc, not the HX or DX or whatever small time VTEC engine out there. In the Hondas with the VTEC there is the usual accelaration till about over 5000. depends on engine type, then the VTEC cam lobe engages then thats where it starts to pull harder and the fun begins.
kupaq 01-27-2002, 05:46 AM I just finished with my throttle body and a lil tip. If you took the butterfly out you will have to reset it with a feeler gauge. I knife edged mine and put it back in, cycled it a few times and found that it was sticking closed. I loosened the two screws and reset it with a couple .002 shims. Put it all back together - no idle problems - no sticking throttle. Hope this helps.
will
kupaq 01-27-2002, 05:50 AM Oh and one more thing. if you knife-edge the butterfly be sure to knock off the burrs at the edge.
KapaFool 01-27-2002, 08:58 AM Thanks for the tip. Hey Ben good thing I have some feeler gauges around.
WRXnFX 01-28-2002, 01:07 AM Who wants to do theirs next? Winslow
