View Full Version : exhaust system? RawCode 01-12-2002, 06:18 PM Is there a muffler place here in Anchorage that can do a custom mandrel exhaust system? I do not feel like spending 500+ on a exhaust... :( RawCode RallyX13 01-12-2002, 06:49 PM There are a few places in Anchorage that I know of. Ranes and Shine Welding on King Street. Tom Ranes is the owner and he is a great guy, and I am sure he will set you up. Their number is 868-5079 Alaska Muffler & Welding is on Commercial Drive. That is where I had the exhaust done on my old RS, and they did a great job. Their number is 276-4021. Later....Kris KapaFool 01-12-2002, 10:02 PM Whatever you do, don't take it to MIDAS! Rip off artists. RawCode 01-13-2002, 12:21 AM I did say mandrel, not crush bent MIDAS crap! UGH! Thanks Rally... I will give them a call or stop by. :) KapaFool 01-13-2002, 04:00 AM Oops, forgot about the Midasize crap. WRXnFX 01-14-2002, 03:26 AM I would have to go to Alaska Muffler & Welding or Jim's Muffler. Jim's has alot of racing experience and does alot of custom work. Winslow RawCode 01-14-2002, 03:40 AM Well i have been doing some reading about different muffler brands and have found out a few things. 1. Flowmaster seems to suck. I mean none of their mufflers has a straight through preforated core. Their mufflers even seem to have baffles to impead the flow of the exhaust. It seems to me that they are made more for sound than anything... :( 2. Magnaflow mufflers seem to be rather good. They have a stright through design with preforated cores and are avalible with a varity of tips and designs. 3. I want a three inch catback simply because I will be going turbo eventually and I do not want to buy the same peice over again. I am well aware thing I might lose some torque with a three inch but hey i am planning for the future. 4. I drove by alaska muffler and welding today just to find it and it seems like it is a good shop. They are also on Magnaflow's dealer site which is a good sign.. i think! 5. The brullen systems seem nice but I do not see a good reason to spend 700 bucks on an exhaust system. It just doesn't make sense money wise... guess I am not like everyone else here...:D just a lil RawCode WRXnFX 01-14-2002, 04:15 AM Get an estimate and post the price and I'll see if we can get you a better price on a cat-back modular piece from BPM, MRT, ScoobySports, and others. Winslow RawCode 01-14-2002, 04:48 AM I shall do that when I head by there tomorrow, err today.. whatever... umm when the sun rises, wait this is alaska! We don't have a sun this time of year! Damn alaskans! hehe kupaq 01-14-2002, 01:49 PM Winslow How much would a Scoobysport catback set me back? WRXnFX 01-14-2002, 02:20 PM kupaq - I'll PM you the price. We offer better pricing to akautogear members. Winslow RawCode 01-14-2002, 10:59 PM Ok I went to the shop that Rally suggested and they told me this. "There is no shop in alaska that can make a mandrel bent exhaust system" Weird eh? He said I should order it out of state if I want something like that. So I guess it is brullen or something hehe... I still will not be buying for quite awhile, so I shall wait and see. I just wanted to see if it was possible in alaska. RawCode RallyX13 01-14-2002, 11:28 PM Hmmm, well that sucks. However they bent the exhaust on my RS seemed to work just fine, and I loved the sound that had. But there are exhaust systems out there for the WRX that are under $500. The main thing that we get screwed on up here is shipping. I can get the exhausts cheap enough, but when I go to ship them up here, we get screwed. But if we order enough, we can use my consolidator, and save some money on the shipping. But it is hard to find enough people where it is a money savings. Well good luck, and let me know if I or Winslow can help at all. Kris KapaFool 01-14-2002, 11:31 PM I guess if you were drag racing and you needed that little extra. WRXnFX 01-15-2002, 05:43 AM What are you looking for in an exhaust system? Sound, performance, looks? Have you considered an MRT muffler section? The sound isn't loud, has some performance benefits because it is a cat-back exhaust, and has great construction. If you get your order to us in time then the price on an MRT exhaust would be considerably under $500. That's because we have a current order coming from MRT. We can also get you muffler sections from HKS, ScoobySports and BPM. Winslow RawCode 01-15-2002, 06:24 AM I am all about performance... not sound or looks. I do not care for really loud exhaust, but i do like subtle looks. BUT I do not have the money currrently. Otherwise I would jump on this MRT deal. I was mainly just trying to find out if a mandrel system could be made in alaska. thank you guys for your help.. :) RawCode WRXnFX 01-15-2002, 06:47 AM Try Jim's Mufler they have lots of racing experience. Winslow AK_2002_WRX 01-17-2002, 02:00 AM how about this?? i saw this in another post, its a straight pipe from the axle back AKSubie 01-17-2002, 02:41 AM Doesn't whtdvl have a similar setup on his WRX? (the straight pipe thing) whtdvl 01-17-2002, 03:23 AM I do have the same setup. NO ONE in Alaska can make you a mandrel bent exhaust system. WRXnFX 01-17-2002, 06:18 AM If you're going to get a local muffler shop to create a custom mandrel bent system made then you might as well buy an aftermarket brand. The cost will be about the same. I guess if no one in Anchorage will do mandrel bends then you're out of luck. Just get a WHTDVL special. How much did that cost anyways? KapaFool 01-17-2002, 10:33 PM One low price of a hacksaw and a resonator tip. Oh, and another piece of pipe. RawCode 01-17-2002, 11:18 PM SCC said it might be cheaper to get a custom bent system... I figured it would be too.. if I got some some pre made mandrel bends I bet some shop would be able to do it, but then I should just order a commerical system! hehe :p RawCode SQUAD_907 01-18-2002, 03:22 AM winslow- can u get stromung piping? i need the downpipe and center pipe... (13 words) WRXnFX 01-18-2002, 05:57 AM I'm looking into that tomorrow along with the GReddy Evo exhaust. A custom madrel bent system would be cheaper if you could get it done in Alaska. AutoXr 01-19-2002, 02:02 PM I'm up for an exhaust too, something that will generate power, but not too much drone at highway speeds. I've been looking at M2, Borla, Enthuza, and Thermal R&D. The Thermal deal looks the best to me right now, but it's about $600 for the cat-back. 3" cat-back, straight flow oval muffler with 4" tip, stainless, and 3 pieces. I have the same muffler on my Miata with a 3" tip and 2.25" piping and like the sound. Borla looks interesting, inexspensive too, but it's got fugly tip! M2 looks good too, but I think it's around $700 Enthuza sounds interesting and uses the same muffler as the Thermal, but runs $50-$100 less?? It won't be out for 6 to 8 weeks. So, who has aftermarket systems already installed that will be at the Scooby meet next weekend? I wanna compare sound. KapaFool 01-19-2002, 05:00 PM I like the Thermal exhaust. Nice looks and the price. I haven't heard the sound though. I like the Greddy Evo myself. Its on Kris' car Honda right now. Roars good when the VTEC is on but quiet on idle. I want to order one real soon like yesterday. Did you catch that Winslow? I need that exhaust!! Pronto!! WRXnFX 01-20-2002, 05:08 AM Hopefully, I'll have the BPM GT on my car. SQUAD_907 01-23-2002, 04:24 AM yo u ever find anything on stromung? WRXnFX 01-23-2002, 07:01 AM Yes, I did. They replied to my last email about your mid and down pipe but never gave prices. I'm waiting on the number so I can reply fully. Winslow RallyX13 01-23-2002, 12:40 PM AutoXr, I emailed you a few things on exhausts, did you get that information? Unfortunately some of the suppliers at SEMA that said they were going to make exhaust for the WRX have not sent me any info on it yet. But hopefully they will send it in the future. Kris AutoXr 01-24-2002, 01:30 AM RalyX13 - got the info on exhausts. I'm just trying to absorb all the info available on exhausts right now and will decide what to do within the next month or so. Like most folks, I have a small pot o' money to work with and this year I have to buy 2 sets of tires, would like to get an exhaust (cat-back or turbo-back), maybe sways, and maybe other stuff too. I need to sort out what I want to get, then it's going to be like I needed it yesterday, you know, like a typical computer user. AK_2002_WRX 01-24-2002, 02:10 AM does anyone have any info on the tanabe racing medalion system for our cars? i saw it here http://www.vividracing.com/prod_exhaust.php its all the way at the bottom. i like this exhaust because it has a removable silencer, are there any other exhausts out there that have a removable silencer too? Redline8k 01-24-2002, 02:51 AM does anyone have pics of the BPM TT system installed... thanks -nick WRXnFX 01-24-2002, 07:14 AM The BPM GT has a silencer. You'll have to wait until the meet to hear it hough. I might have pics of the TT installed. I'll look. I know I saved them somewhere. Winslow |
