Colin McRae, son, and two others dead following crash
By Ryan Douthit, Subiesport Magazine (http://www.subiesport.com)

Following a crash of McRae's personal helicopter near his estate in Lanarkshire, Scotland, Colin McRae, his son and two family friends have perished. Details as to what caused the crash are still unknown, but McRae was known to be an experienced and safe helicopter pilot. The 39-year old rally champion is survived by his wife and daughter.

Early Sunday morning, identities of all four on board the helicopter at the time of the accident were confirmed: "Although a post mortem has still to take place, the four involved are believed to be Mr Colin McRae (39) of Jerviswood House and his son Johnny Gavin McRae, aged 5; Ben Porcelli (6), of Cleghorn Road, Lanark, who had been over playing with Johnny; and family friend Graeme Duncan (37), of L'Ile Degaillot, Faycelles, France."

Update: A NASIOC memorial sticker design has been selected

Service of Celebration
Arrangements will be put in place to organize a service to celebrate the lives of Colin and Johnny. The details of the service have yet to be decided but will be posted at ColinMcRae.com as soon as they become available. All who would like to attend will be most welcome.

All of us at Subiesport Magazine, NASIOC and the entire Subaru community extend our condolences to the McRae, Porcelli and Duncan families and those close to the departed at this difficult time.

It's ironic that Richard Burns and Colin McRae died from something other than rally racing... Just goes to show you how safe they make those damn WRC cars... Both Richard and Colin had their share of HORRIFIC crashes, but they both seemed to always "walk away" from them...

Man, that sucks so badly... I had a lic plate frame that said "WARNING! DRIVER THINKS HE'S COLIN!"... It was on my RS that had the full 2000 WRC graphics... I think I'll put it onto my WRX as a sort of memorial.

Damn, I still can't believe him and his son died...

I can't even imagine what his wife and daughter are feeling right now. My prayers go out to them, R.I.P. Colin McRae.

R.I.P. Colloin and son.

My prayers are with them!

THE former rally driving champion Colin McRae was killed and his five year-old son feared dead in a helicopter crash yesterday afternoon. The aircraft came down in Jerviswood, Lanarkshire, half a mile from the family's home and burst into flames just after 4pm.

Jean-Eric Freudiger, McRae's agent, said the 39-year-old driver had been piloting the helicopter himself. Also on board were believed to be his son Johnny, another adult and another child. Police said there were no survivors.

McRae's wife Alison and their daughter Hollie, 9, were not on board, friends said.

McRae became Britain's first World Rally champion in 1995. He was one of the country's most successful sportsmen, achieving 25 wins in World Rally events and 42 podium places. He was a flamboyant driver, inspiring one the world's best-selling computer rally games.

The helicopter came down within half a mile of McRae's home, Jervis House, a 16th-century tower house, which has an adjacent helipad. The weather had been overcast, with a light breeze, but visibility was good.

Strathclyde police said the extent of the fire damage was making identification a problem.

McRae's wife, a childhood sweetheart and his former co-driver, was taken back to the house under police escort shortly after 6pm. She looked calm, but neighbours gathering outside the house looked shaken with grief.

McRae's friend the rally journalist Jeremy Hart who flew with the champion several times described him as a "very good, very measured pilot whose natural ability with machinery was second to none". "Colin regularly flew all over the UK and into Europe," said Hart. "He knew the terrain and conditions at Jerviswood very well. It was the place he flew into most regularly.

"As a driver Colin was misunderstood slightly as being reckless but everything you saw with him came from pure raw talent as opposed to being learnt. He was the Michael Schumacher of rally driving.

"It's so ironic that he should die in a helicopter crash when he had competed and had brushed with death so many times as a rally driver."

I'm at a loss for words, words can't describe how I feel at this moment. I'm gutted...

I remember seeing him take the championship on the last stage in Wales in 1995 with my father, we cheered him along.

He was the sole individual who got me interested in rallying and ultimately sold me the Subaru brand almost ten years later. I was hoping he'd stage a WRC comeback at some point and eagerly awaited his current project involving the R4 rally car.

It was a tragic loss to loose Richard Burns, to loose another sporting legend, Colin McRae and Johnny “his young son” at such a young age, has shaken me to the core.

My thoughts, prayers and condolences go to Alison and the McRae family.

Rest in Peace...

Colin Steele McRae, MBE (August 5, 1968 - September 15, 2007) was a Scottish World Rally Championship driver, the son of five-time British Rally Champion, Jimmy McRae and older brother of professional driver Alister McRae. He won the world driver's title in 1995, was championship runner-up in 1996, 1997 and 2001, and third in 1998.

He helped Subaru to the Manufacturers' title in 1995, 1996 and 1997, and Citroën in 2003. He was appointed MBE (Member of the Order of British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth II in 1996.

He's a legend... Just like Subaru.

Completely saddened... and I had just met his wife Alison last month backstage at a Dwight Yoakam concert in Sun Valley, ID. We were talking for a bit and she was telling me about her kids and husband. She said he raced cars and that his name was Colin... her thick accent and mentioning "Colin" I put two and two together and said to her that he's a great hero of mine.

She was flattered because she said not many americans knew about him. I told her I am a member of an on-line forum of mostly US based Subaru and rally racing fans and he is most definately a household name among the 100,000 plus members... I can't believe it.

Official word from Nick:

Hey guys, just to keep you posted...

For those that aren't aware, we did something similar to this a while back for the Lovell/Freeman families when they passed away, and raised about $5K that we sent to their families by way of Subaru.

So I want to do something, but it has to be run through NASIOC. No offense to anyone here, but I can't trust that someone else running it will make sure the profits are going directly to the families. I do realize that the seller here is trying to make them not for profit, but that's not really helping anyone involved.

What's more generous, putting a decal on your car in memorial of someone so important to the Subaru community or putting the decal on your car while at the same time making a small donation to help their family, and show them how much Colin meant to all of us.

I will post up details as soon as we have something ready, we're working on it.

Might also noticed we modified out logo on top of te page!

He helped Subaru to the Manufacturers' title in 1995, 1996 and 1997, and Citroën in 2003. He was appointed MBE (Member of the Order of British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth II in 1996.

He's a legend... Just like Subaru.

The reason I learned his name was after I learned subarus. Drivers are the better half of legendary cars, the cars usually die first. Rest In Peace.

Sucks really bad that no one carries WRC in the US anymore; or for that matter will even televise any news about it. God forbid Speed should have to put off some (old re-run) NASCAR to cover the story or do any sort of tribute.

At least we have the internet.

just my opinion, but i think if you all want to really do something about it, go play on some dirt roads, kick it up in his name, (imho) it's what he would prefer

but don't get me wrong, i'm gutted.

Probably not, but this is the only way most of us can even hear about / confirm this since no one covers WRC or even acknowledges it exists.

On another note, I was thinking it would be cool if someone would put together some sort of memoriam car decals and the proceeds of which could be donated in some way. Obviously haven't thought it through very far yet, but I'd certainly run a couple on my car.

I am a graphic designer by trade so if this sounds like something others would be interested in I'd be happy to help out any way I can. Or if there is something else in the works for this already I'd like to know about it.

God, I can't believe it- first Burnsie and now Colin. :(
Colin *was* World Rally to so many of us. He was the one who got us interested in it -I know that's the case for me and my wife.
We were thrilled to see him at Wales Rally GB in '04. He wasn't competing, but was there to help his brother, Alistair. We passed him in the paddock and I hissed to Tina, my wife, "that was COLIN McRAE!!!" She turned to look at him, I turned and he turned, surprised to hear a coupla yanks in BFE, Wales watching something that wasn't NASCAR...
It's one of our most prized WRC moments.
He will be missed.

God speed, Colin...

I never met Colin, but I watched him rally through WRC coverage when I was a kid. In fact, he was the first WRC driver I ever watched and I followed him from Subaru to Ford.

For the past two years, I wrote about him and his exploits in both the WRC and the X Games. After hours writing about a person and their deeds, they get under your skin and in some ways become a part of you.

Like most fans, I feel a sense of loss. The world is a littler dimmer in some way for me. As I have gotten older, I have learned that loss and tragedy are a part of life. I also know that as long as we remember, no one is ever really gone. So take a moment to remember, and bring Colin back to us, if just in your mind.

Never stop living. If we take anything away from this it's that we must live moment to moment. You're here today, but you never know about tomorrow. I'm glad Colin achieved what he did when he was alive. He truly lived every day. The death of his 5 year old son and his son's 6 year old friend on the other hand is a tragedy truly too great for words. Don't forget to live and love every day. It's the most important thing I've ever had to learn. It took the death of my father this past February to learn to seize every day, every moment. My prayers are with his grieving family.

R.I.P Colin, another great wheel man gone too soon. Richard Burns, Peter "Possum" Bourne, and now Colin. May his contributions to the sport never be forgotten.

Then this ironic bit of news came out:

David Richards, whose Prodrive organisation is due to enter Formula One racing next season, survived a helicopter crash on Sunday, less than 24 hours after his former driver, ex-world rally champion Colin McRae, died in a similar accident.

Richards was piloting his own helicopter back to the UK from the Belgian Grand Prix, after leaving Spa early upon hearing of McRae’s death.

The former BAR boss ran into suspected transmission trouble near Stansted Airport, but managed to land the craft before it crashed onto its side. Richards and his wife - the only passenger - walked from the wreckage unharmed.

McRae, who won his 1995 title with Richards, was also piloting his own helicopter when it crashed near his Scottish home on Saturday. His son and two other passengers also perished.

I'm still in shock and having a hard time focusing on any at work. Colin was such an inspiration and one of the big reasons why rally evolved the way it did. His extreme driving style brought the rally scene center stage again and is largely to thank for why we can go buy rally cars in our dealerships today.
Also, his series of games was one of the reasons I work in the industry now. Whenever I see a rally blue car flying half sideways over a hill, I will think of Colin McRae. :( :( :( :(

A sad sad loss for Rally Racing, Subaru not to mention the rest of the car community. I am at a loss for words and wish nothing but the best for the rest of his family because I know how hard it is to loose someone so close.

RIP Colin you will be missed and always remembered.

The official sticker is being planned as we speak and will be offered on a number of Subaru sites. Please look a page or two back for info.

How about a wallpaper?

Heard the news today (damn US news). Took the car out to throw up some rocks after work in Colin's memory. I think that's what he would want us all to do:) Then came home and busted out the oldest bottle of wine I have in his and Johnny's memory. Poured some out for them both. I'm not sure reality has set in yet, I still cant believe that the man who got me into the automotive industry is gone. But I hope that I've paid my respects in some small way. RIP Colin, and Johnny. You both were taken from us WAYYYYY too soon.

Godspeed to the rest of both families.

My heart hurts,

The older I get the more I understand we are here for a very short period of time, I truley believe there is some great bench racing, and at this table , Senna is saying formula one is the best, Lovell and Colin are saying Rally is the best and Davy Alison, and Kulwicki, and even Earnhart are sittng at the table listening with a grin on ther face, And at the end of every day they all just happy to have lived with the same spirit and drive.

I miss them all!

Found this fairly new video compilation of Colin, pretty outrageous. Great example of why he's a legend, this guy has been taunting death for a while. Completly fearless,,,RIP.

Heard from a friend in Oz that Alister McRae was at a rally in Australia.

Real sad reason to have to jump on a plane home.

Since they have announced the plans for a memorial service, it would be so nice if they make a recording of the memorial service available.

I am sure I am not the only one who would in some way like to be able to say goodbye by watching that.....

It would be a great service for the motor sport world if SPEED covered it live considering Rally and F1 WAS the real reason Speed Channel became popular before Fox bought them. If they can cover a live F1 race from the other side of the planet, this would be nothing and of greater meaning.

Anyone care to start a letter writing campaign?

Good luck with that.. though I had a fleeting image of Ken Block's jump superimposed over a church somewhere on the moors for a second. :)

I was think more along the lines of having Nick suggest that as part of the discussions with his management and family about the memorial stickers.

I can believe that they understand what an impact he had by the language of the annoucement inviting all who wish to attend.

Many many of his fans who would like to but will not be able to be there but collectively the world will be able to if it is streamed or recorded.

I personally would not want Speed Channel involved as I don't believe they will would be doing for the right reasons.
