View Full Version : Ford Taurus SHO
AK_2002_WRX 01-14-2002, 09:47 PM do you guys know anything about the ford taurus SHO?? are they fast? i raced my friend's SHO today and he kept up with me, it was a close race:o kinda scared me cause i thought i was goin to lose. oh yeah he also has a high flow exhaust and a modified airbox, maybe that was why he kept up. well i guess i need to start savin up some money for parts:cool:
RawCode 01-14-2002, 10:56 PM SHO used to be Fords high performance tag for the Taurus and they are fast! heheh I would call it the equilivilent of the SVT tagging...
RawCode
Do you have an automatic?
Stock, the SHO's would run low 15's. Even with the exhaust and airbox, you should still be faster(unless you have an auto).
KapaFool 01-14-2002, 11:15 PM SHO's are pretty fast too. Was it the older ones with the turbo or the V-8?
RallyX13 01-14-2002, 11:22 PM The old ones had engines made by Yamaha, thats why they kicked butt!!

KapaFool 01-14-2002, 11:30 PM Whut?
RallyX13 01-14-2002, 11:31 PM I have heard of posters who put one word to boost their amount of posts.....but I use nineteen!!!!!
hahahaha
KapaFool 01-14-2002, 11:31 PM Okay!
jrotten 01-14-2002, 11:43 PM Yo, KapaFool, the early SHO's had 24v V6's and the later ones had 32v V8's...but none had turbos from the factory...
KapaFool 01-14-2002, 11:49 PM R U sure because it seems that is a pretty weak 6 cylinder to not have a turbo. What would the difference be from the regular Taurus?
AKSubie 01-15-2002, 12:16 AM My friend had an earlier model SHO and it WAS fast. It was also only a V6 (don't recall a turbo).
I believe the difference between the SHO and the other Taurus' was the SHO had the very light, yet very powerful Yamaha V6 (also 5spd only I think for the first few years), as oppossed to the clunky Ford V6 in the normal Taurus.
just my $.02
KapaFool 01-15-2002, 12:22 AM Cool! It goes to show how much I know about Fords. If the 6 cylinder Ford thing kept up I better get a bigger turbo now with NOSSS.:p
whtdvl 01-15-2002, 01:49 AM Just let me drive your car!
SQUAD_907 01-15-2002, 01:59 AM yah....just drive better! it can't be that fast!
AK_2002_WRX 01-15-2002, 02:35 AM hey everyone, thanks for all the replys
my car is a 5 speed. no mods at all. my friend told me he had like 200 horsepower to the ground and 190-something to the ground too...his car was also 5 speed. when we took off i didn't launch my car at all, i'm too worried about messing something up, when we left the light, he was ahead of me and i started catching up in 2nd and when i went to 3rd i pulled away slowly. i was surprised of how close the race was.
hey WHTDVL i saw your car on saturday by the honda dealer, the one with motorcycles and 4 wheelers.
are there any special ways to launch without worrying about breaking anything and glazing my clutch??
WRXnFX 01-15-2002, 06:59 AM KapaFool wanted an SHO back in the day. They were fast and furious. When launching, try slipping the clutch instead of just dropping it. Dropping the clutch can damage the transmission and overstress the gears. Subarus have glass trannies. Be gentle. WHTDVL works over at Honda on Fifth.
akwrxdb 01-15-2002, 12:32 PM I drove a Taurus SHO when they first came out in the 80's and it was pretty fast. It did have a 24 Valve V6 engine that was built by Yamaha. The last 4 valves on that engine did not open until 3000 rpm's. That caused a little bit of a turbo feeling to the car but it did not have a turbo. The car did 0-60 in just over 6 seconds and a quarter mile in just over 14. The top end was around 160. They are pretty fast cars, but you should still be able to out drive it in your WRX, particularily in upper second gear and all of third.
Yamaha later tested that engine to see just what it would handle. The red line in the car went from 7000 to 9000 rpm. They tested the engine at 14000 rpms for 48 hours and had no problems. The newer Taurus is not nearly as fast and last I checked you could only get them in automatics these days.
Long story short if your friend is a good driver he might keep up with you off the line, but by the top of second gear the WRX should have at least a car length I would think.
AKSubie 01-15-2002, 12:59 PM SHO 'nuff
SQUAD_907 01-15-2002, 05:34 PM rev to 5000 and slip the clutch...the "race" wouldn't seem that close if u launched good! :o
kupaq 01-15-2002, 07:38 PM Yeah....with a good launch there should be no way a front wheel drive car, even if he has an LSD, could hang with you. IMHO.
KapaFool 01-15-2002, 09:59 PM Yeah, try the slip the clutch tactic, that should work but you might need to practice a bit. Tell your friend we'll all race him one at a time and at about the fifth race then you jump in and race him in your car. You'll whip him up pretty good by then!
I thought Ben worked at Showboats as a male dancer downstairs? We'll I also thought SHO's had a turbo.
AK_2002_WRX 01-16-2002, 07:10 PM won't slipping my clutch "glaze" it? and cause it to slip while accelerating up a hill?
Slipping the clutch will just make it wear out faster. You won't see any short term effects, just a shorter overall clutch life. Don't worry about that though, it's better to be replacing the clutch than the tranny.
Or you can just go the safe route and spare the clutch and tranny by not doing crazy launches.
kupaq 01-16-2002, 09:10 PM The only short term effect is a nasty smell......yeeech!
AK_2002_WRX 01-17-2002, 12:56 AM how much shorter would it make my clutches life?
oh yeah.. what causes that stinky smell from the clutch?
WRXnFX 01-17-2002, 07:05 AM Clutch life will really depend on how you drive your car on a daily basis. If you're constantly slipping the clutch and racing, then don't expect you're clutch to last too long. When slipping the clutch, the friction between the clutch and the flywheel will generate enough heat to burn the asbestos composite clutch residue.
Sokudo 01-17-2002, 10:55 AM i agree with Winslow! (gotta start post whoring hehe)
SQUAD_907 01-18-2002, 04:00 AM just remember that a clutch is cheaper than a tranny, unless ur rich and money ain't a thang! then just drop it like it's hot!
