View Full Version : Opinions requested
SirWally 01-15-2002, 04:56 AM OK. So _technically _ Kris' old Suby is my wifes, not mine :-( so I am now looking to trade my 94' Legacy L Wagon in for my very own Impreza. And here begins my dilemma:
I really like having a wagon for the extra space it affords me, but I don't think I _really_ need a Legacy. Plus I _really_ like the Impreza!
I took an Outback Sport for a spin tonight, and I liked it a lot (the shifter has to go though -- IMMEDIATELY! In goes a short-throw.) I was actually looking for a TS Wagon, but they just sold the ONLY 5 speed they had this morning. Oh well. I am not going to even bother test driving an auto. From what I can tell, they are almost identical, bar options.
So, what are your opinions/experience with the TS vs. the OS? Are there any significant differences between either and the RS?
Cheers,
Simon.
OMT -- What is with that Subaru Baja thing?! (www.subarubaja.com) Blargh! My Lord, how on earth did that hideous thing ever escape?!
Resbum 01-15-2002, 05:01 AM Why not a WRX Wagon?
SirWally 01-15-2002, 05:22 AM Price mainly. The WRX would cost me on the order of $6000 more. I am planning on some home mods this summer, too, so I have to watch my budget.
I haven't actually driven a WRX, but I have ridden in one. From what people have said and from what I have read, I think I would be happy enough with something from the RS family. I must say, I love driving the one we have!!! It's a blast.
Kris -- she needs a clean, but we're looking after her. Planning on putting in a two-car garage this summer, so she and whichever Suby I end up with will have a nice, cozy home. :-) That shifter knob and boot look pretty good. I didn't bother trimming the boot down, so it appears a little big, but still attractive.
RawCode 01-15-2002, 06:34 AM The only difference i belive is that outbacks have a little higher ground clearance. That and options...

WRXnFX 01-15-2002, 06:56 AM SirWally: Eric and I saw your wagon drive off later that night. The Baja will be fun to drive but it sure is ugly.
AKSubie 01-15-2002, 12:54 PM SirWally: I think that the OBS look pretty cool. If your were not getting the rex wagon, then I would probably rather get the OBS wagon. The TS looks nice, but as far as wagons go (aside from the Legacy GT) they look best in 2-tone schemes. Also the wheels on the OBS look better than the TS.
Oohhh, Altough.......If you are going to mod to the point of your wifes, the cheaper the better. And then who would care about wheels, options, color, etc.... If you are going to change alot of things out.
Yeah...That's it.
SirWally 01-15-2002, 04:50 PM Well, I do plan on modding it, how much we will have to see. I know that I will make a bunch of cosmetic changes, and some under the hood. I did want the 16" rims, though. And the stiffer suspension on the OS is nice (although I would probably go with the TS if it had the sport-tuned suspension of the RS.)
I must admit that the interior of the OS is nowhere near as hideous as it looked in the catalogue. And it isn't actually two-toned like the reast of the Outbacks. Except for the seperator trim, which is in some sort of gold color.
It's a tough decision. I am not going to tempt myself by test-driving a WRX Wagon....must ....resist.....temptation......but.....so hard.....
SQUAD_907 01-15-2002, 04:58 PM just test drive the rex wagon...they have a nice white one! what's a few more grand in the long run! come on...test drive....test drive!
KapaFool 01-15-2002, 10:15 PM Forester with Vishnu Turbo Kit!
RallyX13 01-16-2002, 02:22 AM Simon,
Disregard the other post I had, since now reading this one has answered some of my questions. Glad to hear the RS is doing good, and damn do I miss it. I am already planning my return to the world of AWD!
As for your next car, I think we could make the TS look damn good, and if it saved you money on goodies for it, then all the better. I am sure they will get another TS in, so do not rush if they say they will not get another in. It has the right engine, and that is what is really important. So I say go for the TS, unless the options suck, and we will get you some 16's.
Thats my .02 cents
Kris
MrJoe 01-16-2002, 03:22 AM Hells bells Simon - you know where the keys to my rex are!
I'm suprised you haven't "borrowed" it for a lunch meeting or such!
But seriously, you are more than welcome to take mine out - at least for now you would get the feel of a stock WRX (+17" wheels).
MrJoe
SirWally 01-16-2002, 06:46 AM MrJoe -- I may just have to take you up on that offer one of these days. ;-)
Kris -- I haven't test driven the TS wagon yet, but I did like the Outback Sport. I test drove the WRX wagon tonight, but it really is out of my price range right now. I have no idea if they are going to get another 5-speed TS in any time soon, and it might feel a little different to the OS given the OS's stiffer suspension (which I kinda like.) I am quite partial to the look of the Savannah Green Metallic TS, but I also like either the Black or White OS. It's a tough choice!
So from what I am reading, a base OS should be good for about $19000..and the TS for about $18000.......OK. Now, off to battle I go.
WRXnFX 01-16-2002, 01:41 PM If you can't get a WRX wagon then get the white or black OS. You'll be happy with the standard options. Plus it leaves you with some money to upgrade. Winslow
RallyX13 01-16-2002, 02:35 PM Yeah, if the cost difference is only a grand, then I would go with the OBS as well. But I am sure they can both look good. Another good reason for the OBS is the suspension, and if you do not plan on upgrading that right away, you would have to deal with the cheaper TS suspension for awhile.
Kris
SirWally 01-16-2002, 03:16 PM Sounds like my preference of the OS is being reinforced. I think that I will choose that one.....Now, black or white........I think I may have to flip a coin......Although I gather that White is easier to see in the fog, and apparently shows the dirt less than darker colors -- although in this weather, nothing will look clean ;-)
AKSubie 01-16-2002, 03:25 PM I would tell you to go with the black, but having had a black Dakota, it was a _____ to keep clean, but boy, when it was....WOH! As far as white, my mother had a white car, it seemed just as difficult to keep clean. (plus a pain to match the paint) I have seen the burgandy color, that doesn't look that bad either, actually looks pretty good, but then, I am partial to red. :D
WRXnFX 01-16-2002, 03:45 PM I've had plenty of black cars to tell you, "Don't get the black one!" Hard to keep clean, shows every scratch, but looks beautiful when clean. There are plenty of people here that will tell you that white is the way to go and I am one of them. Kris would be jealous if you were to upgrade to a TMIC. I think he is partial to the GC8 body, thought. Winslow. Post Whore Word Count (76 words)
SQUAD_907 01-16-2002, 05:10 PM true black is hard to maintain, but it sure does look nice if u do!
(15 words)
RallyX13 01-16-2002, 05:44 PM Try to picture how you want to customize it, then think of which color you would be able to make look the best. But you can do great things with either color, but black is a pain in the arse. Drive down the street and it is already dirty.
Kris
SQUAD_907 01-18-2002, 04:04 AM that's why i have lots of quarters in my ashtray!
WRXnFX 01-18-2002, 05:48 AM And everytime you wash it, you add more swirl marks to the paint. Black is the worst color for scratches.
SQUAD_907 01-18-2002, 06:44 AM i only do laser...touchless washes! first i do the 5 dollar one and then i come around and do the 7 dollar one, cuz it has the wax!
WRXnFX 01-18-2002, 06:51 AM Why not just do the $10 one?
SQUAD_907 01-23-2002, 04:30 AM because it's not that good...with the $5 one it's gets sprayed twice and with the $7 one it gets sprayed again and then wax! i wish it would get the front better though!
WRXnFX 01-23-2002, 07:07 AM Sorry, back to the topic. I think you should get the OBS. The one thing that I don't like is the two tone. Winslow
RallyX13 01-23-2002, 12:43 PM I think the two-tone looks OK in some colors, but in other colors, not so good.
Any update on the new Subaru SirWally??
Kris
SirWally 01-23-2002, 03:35 PM Got it yesterday! :) I lke it! :D
You may see me driving it around like a Granny for the next 1000 miles :(
SirWally 01-23-2002, 03:37 PM BTW, I got the Aspen White one.
RallyX13 01-23-2002, 05:06 PM Congrats on the new car!! :D
Did you get the Aspen White two-tone OBS?
Are you and your wife both going to bring your cars to the meet on Sunday?
Kris
SirWally 01-23-2002, 06:03 PM I think Teri will drive the RS and I will drive OS. Two tone....well, the fenders are the standard gold/gray color (what color is that anyway?) Under the trim along the sides of the car it is still white (unlike older models which had the solid color all around the bottom of the car. I prefer it the way they have it now......
AKSubie 01-23-2002, 06:05 PM Cool, Congrats to your new addition Sir Wally!!
SirWally 01-23-2002, 06:29 PM AKSubie,
I am pretty sure I saw you driving down Johns Road the other day. And I also saw you at the intersection of Dimond and the New Seward. Hard car to miss! It looks good!
AKSubie 01-23-2002, 06:35 PM Cool, I've finally been sighted! I don't remember where Johns road is. (read, where is that?) What were the times. Probably me anyway, seen other GT's, including the elusive green w/ exhaust, but not many red ones, at least 2k+ ones.
SirWally, I'm Sorry to have to say I didn't notice you :o were you in your new OBS or in the rally car, I must have been deep in thought or something.
RallyX13 01-23-2002, 06:51 PM Sounds like you better update your profile and get your wife to log onto the i-club and register as well!
Now we have another car to tinker with. Are you ready for a short shifter and Momo knob yet?:D
Kris
SirWally 01-23-2002, 07:50 PM Kris,
I am DEFINITELY ready for that short-shifter and know! We'll talk at the meet, unless you are placing any orders sooner!
SirWally 01-23-2002, 08:03 PM AKSubie,
Johns Road is right off of Klatt. Oceanview Elementary is a little ways down Johns. I was driving my green Wagon. It was daytime (that narrows it down a bit) but I can't remeber that day or exact time. I am pretty sure it was Saturday afternoon.
AKSubie 01-23-2002, 08:15 PM SirWally,
Yeah, that was me then, I was just bummin around Saturday, probably was around 2-2:30ish right? I do remember seeing a green legacy L wagon now that you mention it. That explains it, I was trying to remember seeing you in your RS.
KapaFool 01-23-2002, 08:56 PM I think its also time for the Vishnu turbo kit.
WRXnFX 01-24-2002, 07:04 AM Vishnu does make a turbo kit for the EJ25 motor. Are you ready?
RallyX13 01-25-2002, 01:15 AM We just got done debadging and installing a Kartboy and a Momo in the new OBS. Gotta say the car looks pretty good! SirWally, you did good!!
Kris
SQUAD_907 01-25-2002, 02:24 AM that's cool....i can't wait to see it at the meeting! :)
SirWally 01-25-2002, 05:13 AM Thanks for the help, Kris!! You too, Eric. That shifter rocks! Soooooo much better than the OEM shifter.
I think she looks pretty darn good! Hopefully those mud flaps look good after they are installed. I am still debating whether I should remove the last badge or not. If I do, that lock is gonna be painted white, otherwise it will be gold, to hopefully balance the OB badge.
Looking forward to the meet!!!
WRXnFX 01-25-2002, 07:57 AM Can't wait to see your new ride. Sounds like you guys were busy tonight. Winslow
KapaFool 01-25-2002, 09:36 PM I think you should start goldplating everything. I gots some friends that are lowrider enthusiasts and they can hook you up with some 13" knockoffs, 100 spoke. about 600 with tires. Straight up hydros for the lo-lo look!
SQUAD_907 01-26-2002, 03:03 AM u can't forget the spinners and the white wall tires! cuz it ain't nuthing but a g thang baby!
RallyX13 01-26-2002, 01:14 PM Then we would have to go with the tuck and roll in the interior too, but that is my opinion (like how I keep it on-topic)
Kris
SirWally 01-26-2002, 05:07 PM OK. Everyone remember to bring a hack-saw to the meet so we can chop the roof on my OS. ;)
WRXnFX 01-28-2002, 12:02 AM Simon,
I'm impressed with your new ride. So what's next?
