Tsukuba Time Attack Challenge
By Travis Geny, Subiesport Magazine (http://www.subiesport.com) Photo: Armin H. Ausejo
Tsukuba circuit has long been the hallowed ground of Time Attack and the progenitor of the sport as we know it. For years now, U.S. teams have looked across the pacific to prove their mettle against the best of Japanese tuners. For one determined team, the dream will become a reality.
Paramax, the company known for creating GT LIVE has partnered with Subaru of America to create the Subaru Tsukuba Challenge, an effort to determine the quickest unlimited AWD class Subaru time attack team in the U.S. That team will be sent to Japan to act as a representative of the best U.S. tuners and to compete at the famed Tsukuba circuit.
Teams will have three opportunities to qualify for the U.S. finals on November 11, 2007 that run as part of the Redline Time Attack Series at Laguna Seca Raceway. Teams will have the chance to qualify at several events:
Redline Time Attack (GT LIVE) - Miller Motorsports Park, April 28-29, 2007,· Redline Time Attack (GT LIVE) - Virginia International Raceway, October 6-7, 2007 and Redline Time Attack - Laguna Seca Raceway, November 10, 2007.
The top three Subaru entries in the unlimited AWD class from each event are eligible to compete at the Subaru Tsukuba Challenge finals at Laguna Seca Raceway. Competitors need to show entry forms and result sheets from the qualifying events to be eligible for the finals. The Subaru unlimited AWD class car posting the fastest time on Sunday, November 11, will be certified by a Paramax representative on- site as the winner of the Subaru Tsukuba Challenge.
As an additional bonus, Subaru has retained renowned time attack legend Eiji "Tarzan" Yamada as a factory support driver for Subaru unlimited class time attack teams.

Big_DeWeY 10-02-2007, 04:06 PM I hope someone organizes a "NASIOC to Tsukuba" possie. I would love to go to Japan and it would be even better with a group so we could keep/get ourselves out of trouble :P

They build and run all kinds of cars. They do have some Evos now, but I think they still have this car too. Since this event is subie only.... Well, you figure out the rest. :)
For the record, Jun is one of best tuning shops ever imho. They are the real deal....

jaWRX 10-03-2007, 10:16 PM Crawford ftw
SilverSurfer04STi 10-03-2007, 10:35 PM I'm definitely curious to see how our homeland tuners (crawford, element, Cobb, Dynocomp, TopSpeed, Easy Street, or whomever represents over there) compete against the Japanese tuners. They are already at a disadvantage since the Japanese tuners probably have all run on the track and the USDM tuners probably have not....
If they have this event annually it will only get better. Shops like AMS and Buschur Racing may have time attack subies by next year and the current USDM tuner cars will get better with time....
JDubD 10-03-2007, 11:36 PM ^^^^^I def agree!

GreenMarine 10-04-2007, 11:12 AM That front bumper is awesome!!! I love the smooth lines on the sides!! Kinda wish they could have made the front air dam alittle smaller so it doesn't show the frame and intercooler piping, but for an aftermarket grill, I love it... This is very strange for me because I hate almost all aftermarket body panels for ANY car...

All the driver's for every car, including the winner of this, has PLENTY of experience on this track; don't forget the winner gets Tarzan Yamada as their driver. Setup wise, they will at least get the day before for setup. We had one day of actual setup on our car and were having problems to boot and still did quite well for our first event and first outing of our new car.
SilverSurfer04STi 10-04-2007, 12:30 PM True, true. I forgot that Tarzan was driving the winner car.
Day of setup is good, but some of those Japanese cars have setup down already and have so probably have a slight advantage.
Good points though. I totally forgot about Tarzan.

Not unfair at all. I'm willing to bet that Yamada can help set up the car for that circuit and be competative. He's a pro driver that has driven on that circuit and knows what he wants from the car.

It usually costs ~$15 for spectators admission but there is usually a coupon on their website you can download for $5 off. I'll be at Laguna in the ShimmySideways STi but unfortunately I'm not eligible for Tsukuba since I run in Modified AWD. I'm anxious to see who the lucky Subaru team is though!

SilverSurfer04STi 10-04-2007, 08:45 PM Hey man. Glad to see you won that Redline Time Attack at Gateway in both your classes. I was in the group that was hanging out in the Nukabe tent most of the day on Saturday during your practice sessions. I was the guy with the satin white pearl STi parked on the opposite side of the Nukabe trailor. I was asking you about your wheels on the Evo and both sets (street and race) for your STi. :)
Wish you guys (you/Brad/Nukabe) were competing to go over there.

NoLimitMotors 10-09-2007, 12:06 PM I think whoever wins is going to go over to japan and lay the smack down. Not even kidding. Im pretty confident that at this point, the american way of modding Japanese cars has surpassed the japanese tuners. I whole heartedly believe this. The aftermarket parts industry in america alone DWARFS the volume in japan. Without america's market many of those "crazy japanese tuning shops" wouldnt even exist anymore. On top of that we have all these huge forums for information sharing, a SLEW of great vendors, a ton of of people getting out there building race cars, show cars, hardcore street cars they just cant touch its volume.
im very excited to see how this ends up playing out
but we def got somthing to be proud of, and nothing to be scared of

SilverSurfer04STi 10-09-2007, 12:33 PM Why all the hood scoops if everyone is running Front Mount IC's ? I would think a gapping hole is just going to introduce drag at speed?
Some people put oil and or transmission coolers behind the scoop. Def still serves a functional purpose in that scenario.
Even if you aren't running that part, the cooling of the engine bay might outweigh the downside of drag creation at speed. Depends alot on the track I would think.
man, looks like we should build a time attack Subaru doesn't it.
I wish Mitsu would do something like this. I would LOVE to take our time attack EVO to Japan to mix it up with the locals.

Eric Hsu might finnaly be proven right
"The fact of the matter is that Americans have more ingenuity and it's easier to race in America. Because of this and the American do-it-yourself mentality, you have a superior general knowledge base of racing and racecar parts which are simply more affordable and accessible. However, when it comes to tuning, I would have to say on the whole JDM tuners are better than American tuners. There are some serious hack shops in the US and I'm definitely not proud of that. I will say USA all the way when you talk the best USDM vs. the best JDM tuners.
A perfect example of JDM vs. USDM tuning: our daily driven 580whp R34 GT-R that came out to a Time Attack a couple years ago. We were 0.1 seconds slower than the Signal R34 GT-R with 750whp, full cage, no interior and a sequential transmission. Both cars were driven by Tarzan so you can't say it was a driver issue. That's when I first learned that JDM tuning is just hype. Look at all the Spoon cars that come to the states-a f*@$ing joke."
-Eric Hsu taken fromt he above article.

XeviousR 10-10-2007, 06:12 PM So which cars finished in the top 3 at both events held and are now eligible for Tsukuba. Virginia and Miller motorsport?
Good question. The strange thing is, I think this contest was just recently announced, but the Miller Motorsports event was back in April! The VIR event was just recently, and unfortunately I couldn't make it. Official results aren't posted yet but I'd speculate that TopSpeed was the fastest Subaru at the event. Regardless of what the rules say, I think this is going to be a winner take all, Fastest Subaru at Laguna Seca event, scenario. Maybe they are going to have some kind of runoff of the fastest Subarus to hype it up. That's all I can figure. The rules are vague.

dunnojack 10-16-2007, 04:53 PM i think they need to allow all subarus dispite the class that they're registered in be a part of the challenge. What if a street car just comes out and has fast enough times to compete with the unlimited cars? IMO, the cars should not be limited to a class, it should just be the fastest subies that qualifies...

There is no possible way a street car will be anywhere near the unlimited times so it doesn't matter. You would need an incredible amount of HP just to overcome the fact the unlimited cars run on slicks and street cars are limited to street tires. So it is really a non issue.
SilverSurfer04STi 10-17-2007, 06:14 PM Agreed. Even with the HP required to keep up, you would have some serious traction issues and trouble putting the power to the ground on street tires. I don't think any street class cars will keep up with the unlimited class cars. They never do if you keep track of event results or attend events. Just doesn't happen.
dunnojack 10-17-2007, 07:04 PM you gonna be running that weekend henry?
Yes i will be attending that event. I will not miss this chance to perhaps show ppl that you CAN setup a street car to go up against the golith cars of the unlimited class.

well, to compete in street class, you DO have to run street tires, but that doesnt mean you cant change out your tires for the Unlimited class. I do have to admit that it's a very ambitious goal, but still possible to try.

you both have a really good point, but... take a look at this...
Results from April Redline time attack at buttonwillow:
Unlimited Class AWD:
1 Place 1:50.383 Brian Lock GST Motorsports Impreza L
2nd Place 1:51.697 Gean Sigal The Speed Gallery 996 Turbo
3rd Place 1:53.818 Russ Warr Crawford Performance Subaru STI
Street Class AWD:
1st Place 1:58.452 Nils Leufven GSC/Robispec Evo
2nd Place 2:02.887 Jean Meynet Harmon Motive Subar
3rd Place 2:05.343 Frank Lin Mach III WRX
Look at the first place winner in the STREET class. That was done with about 400whp and with some Potenza RE-01R. So to place 3rd, he only needs to shave off less than 5 seconds... it's something i think that's do-able with some racing slicks that the unlimited class runs and some adjustments to the suspension. again, i'm not saying that it's easy, i'm just saying that they should not rule out the possibility that a street class car just MAY be fast enough with the right driver (of course) to perhaps compete with the top dogs.
GST Motorsports 10-17-2007, 10:32 PM 5 seconds is a fair amount to knock off regardless of tires.

sleepy98 10-18-2007, 02:49 AM What qualifies street vs unlimited tires?
I get confused because some rules say ANY DOT is a street or modified tire and then some rules kick all the DOT 100 and below into Unlimited.
something doesn't seem fair.

The rules of the Primedia Super Lap Battle are different from the Redline Time Attack rules; particularly with regard to Limited/Modified class.
The rules for Primedia Super Lap Battle are here... (http://www.redlinetimeattack.com/index-2.html)
The rules for Redline Time Attack are here... (http://www.superstreetonline.com/eventcoverage/130_0702_2007_super_lap_battle/index.html)
I set my car up so it is legal to run Limited/Modified in both sanctions.

Actually, the Evo vs. STI vs. Legacy event has changed a bit. The 5 lap tuner battle is now a 10 lap battle, and cars that enter the 10 lap battle cannot compete in the time attack battle. My Legacy competed in the time attack, while the widebody STI competed in the 10 lap battle.

Ron Pippin 11-12-2007, 05:49 PM Well, unless you have not heard the PDX Tuning Subaru will be representing April of 08 in Tsukuba Japan. It was an interesting weekend to say the least. I don't think a team could have worked any harder to get the car to be in the finishing position. My hat is off to the ESx team as it is to the Crawford crew as well.....I don't think you will find a classier act than Mr. Sheehan. The GST team loaned parts......and who knows what competing garage loaned parts.....trully an eye opener to me as a car owner/driver. Our competitors want to beat us on the track .....not the paddock....amazing stuff guys...... Navid Kahangi piloted the car to the finish as he will in Japan, PDX will crew and tune.....they will bring their never say die enthusiasim and as an owner I will support their efforts to bring the best American team possible for this event. A big thank you to Jarrad, Dustin, Chris and Jeff (PDX) for all there support and efforts, and to my good buddy Navid......does anybody know I beat his time on the right hand side at the Packwood Pro Solo National event...just checking......Ron Pippin

Steve@GT-LIVE 11-13-2007, 03:44 PM Congrats to PDX!!!!
Ive been talking with quite a few teams and enthusiasts over the past few months and there has been some great feedback from even non Subaru teams. I hope we will be able to do this again in 08', there will be a much bigger Subaru presence with some new teams building and even switching over. What do you guys think about running this program again?
Thanks to Subaru for giving us the opportunity and supporting the Subaru Tsukuba challenge and equally to all teams and enthusiasts.
As mentioned above its all competition on the track but in the pits you had competing teams trying to help each other get their cars running. Theres definately something to be said for Subaru teams, owners and overall community.
Kudos to everyone!

b18turbo 12-21-2007, 09:14 AM PDX won but Crawford and ESX had mechanical difficulties. I would have liked the truly fastest car to be going to Tsukuba so it would have the best chance of a good showing for the U.S. I am sure PDX has a good car I just wonder if another team was faster but couldn't make a run.

You know as well as I, that had nothing to do with the Tsukuba event.
There were plenty of subaru's that finished in many classes. But it was funny that the 3 that were competing for this event.....ALL broke.

yup thats true....PDX won the "event". No denying that...and congrats to them...hope they represent well!!!
but GST also ran when they did, and in the same class...and was the only team that didnt have any motor issues or anything else (which says alot about the team build and tuning)...the only thing is they didnt run on Sat to "qualify". Which they are fine with the decision they made not to run. If they had....well you can guess the outcome...you cant argue that...
And Mike from GST tuned the ESX car which is the only other subaru in the same class that didnt have motor issues.
Anyway...Im not trying to stir the pot...just repling to the comment from
b18turbo and you thats all. It was a very fun event and it was nice seeing old friends there. It will be very interesting to see what happens next year at the TA events....cant wait :)

While I agree, they were "motor" issues.....It was mainly coolant issues that took out both of the other teams.
ya can't run with a radiator that's been ballooned :) (from a leaking water pump or whatever). Bad luck sucks...but it's a part of Time Attack.
I agree, it will be interesting this coming year......:)
sleepy98 12-29-2007, 04:51 AM OK so crawford goes out for dam near 2 years (someone correct me on this if I am wrong on this) and they lay down wicked fast times everywhere with their street widebody sti. Now everyone and their mother is a time attacker, widebody subarus are popping up everywhere and shoot, I have even seen several newcomer timeattackers running the same rims and tires and widebody that the crawford guys have. what does that say?
So maybe there are newer faster cars out there now. But where were they in the past two years?
look, I'm no fanboi but Im pretty sure they helped paved the way for many timeattackers including the gst and pdx guys. It's one thing to lead and another to follow. So quite yer belly-aching, show some respect, and give credit where it's due.

They had a run of a year and a half with no problems...taking people for rides around the track...driving the car on the highway, to and from the track...not trailering the car....had no problems.
They trailered the car to Laguna Seca, split an upper radiator hose, warped the heads, balooned the radiator and that was all she wrote. Can't go very far on warped heads!!!
It would have been a fun race IF nobody had failures. But crap happens. They had an unlucky week. It was either their time to be unlucky....or because they trailered the car
The Crawford car has a good 500lbs on the GST car. Yes, ~500lbs. HP/weight ratio is critical. it would have been a good race between these two cars. :)
maybe next year.

Agreed for sure that the Crawford Team had more than there fair share of bad luck at that event, I think if I heard Chris right their issues started the day prior and they thrashed to get things replaced but due to someone at a machine shop not paying attention they had more issues which ultimately caused them to not post a time (again I may be a little off base but that was what I recalled from our convo).
With regards to the weight thing I would be surprised if the CP car was that heavy, you have to remember our current car is not built for TA but more for w2w and has substantial cage and cage intergration not to mention huge sealed fire wall making the dry weight on the car 2660lbs, basically around 2900lbs with fuel and driver.
Our new car we're finishing up right now for this season is a LOT lighter though ;)

you are correct, it was the RMS finish on the heads that caused the headgaskets to fail. Prior to that, it was the coolant hose causing and issue ;)
Last I heard the Crawford car was 3100 lbs....add Russ (large dude, lol) or tanner...not as large lol, and some fuel.....there's your 500lbs ;)
Sounds like you'll have a nice car next year. Weight reduction is huge bit in racing.
My old man's car had to weigh 3100lbs limited to N/A 358ci. Only so much you can do. :(
Hopefully this next year will be fruitfull for all.

I was going off the 2950lbs or whatever it shows on the video posted with AMS from Miller, unless of course they added wait back since then but I assumed they hadn't as that would make about as much sense as a ashtray on a motorcycle.
