PERRIN Performance (http://WWW.PERRINPERFORMANCE.COM?nasioc) and NASIOC are happy to be assembling what we feel is a great project for many Subaru enthusiasts, both new and old to the WRX scene. We understand that many Subaru enthusiasts are looking to have fun, improve performance and still be able to drive the car daily all on a budget. Thankfully for many NEW people to Subaru the early 2002-2004 WRX models have now fallen to purchase prices that most people can now afford. Our goal here is simply to show what people can do with one of theses early examples of the WRX on a budget of $15k (including car)

Yes it went a little over budget, but we wanted to test and show a few things. You got to see what our equal length header does on a 2.0l. You got to see what the 2.0l could do on stage 2 with OEM cats for street legality. Then we put together a complete stage 4 for Evo and STI type power.

We also got lucky because the car we chose for this came with lowering springs, a 3" exhaust and a fresh clutch. That right there saved us $1k-$1.5k.

is that bretts (e30m3) old car?

YES IT IS!

I don't see that the restoration post has been made yet so I will give a preview here. His car smelled like an old ladies backside, that hadn't been wiped in 3-4 months! The paint was so dull it was rough to the touch and looked white in some sections. I don't think I had seen a car that was this neglected in sometime. NOW, the thankful part is we were able to restore the paint to near new condition (in some cases BETTER than new), and we were able to locate that the A/C exchanger had been liberally dumping water inside the car. (More on that later)

Now the car smells great (not too much of the budget was spent on that) the car shines like new and we are ready to get going. (Well honestly we have been working with the car for some time but lagging on getting the info up here.)

Needless to say PERRIN has resuced a Blaze Yellow from smelly neglected life!

Mroe to come folks!

So how much did you buy it for? How many miles?

Car had 108 on the odo when I drove it home. Paid $10k for the car leaving us with a kool $5k to play with. PLUS we intend to sell some of the parts that someone else added to the car to help keep the project coming.

Interestingly enough this car has REALLY revived my original love for the bugeye that I bought new in 2001! Miss that car a lot, but this one is filling that void nicely and I intend to do it well with a complete makeover and performance upgrade.

Stay tuned!

so what are the plans for the car? keep the updates coming. bugeyes ftw

Perrin

The goal is to make it go, stop and turn. Be able to drag race and do a track event, take the wife and kids to dinner, and make it look a bit better than the crowd. We will combine new parts, used parts, craigslist sourced items etc. to help show how far the $5K can go. But being realistic, expect to see a ton of PERRIN items as well as other supporting mfrs on the car.

I am still very excited that this type of performance is now available for near $10K vs $25K for new. Then spend another $5k and really HAVE something unique.

More info coming soon. Thank you again for your interest!

Sounds like a cool project!

As for... "we were able to locate that the A/C exchanger had been liberally dumping water inside the car."

When I bought my first bugeye, I had that problem, whoever had it before me put a turbo timer in and ran a wire through the hole where the drain hose should be... Did I mention they didn't decide to re-insert the drain hose? I had to deal with soaking wet work clothes for a day because of it, not to mention the horrible smell... Be glad you guys took care of that quick!

Lee

Perrin
11-07-2007, 10:47 AM
Yeah some previous tool had ran the drain tube right on top of the downpipe. The pipe smoked the hose and the remaining amount fell inside the passenger compartment. We were able to save the carpet etc. to help save bucks for the build, but oh god the stench was just about unbearable!!

Thanks folks!

Realistically I dont see this car being able to do all the things you mentioned and still make it relaible. First off if the car is going to the drag strip and going to be tracked, you need to up grade the gears and there goes
your 5K:rolleyes: . If you just throw that 5K into mods those gears will break before you even get to the track.

Perrin
11-07-2007, 01:41 PM
Hey now! Before peeing in my pool, give us a chance to show what the intentions are as well as the limitations of what we are doing. If we go to the strip / track we understand that will involve limitations to launch rpm etc. BUT, that doesn't mean it can't do those things. Admittedly a hardcore build would be different and the budget would be far different as well. We are planning a similar 2.5L build and a 04/05 STi build to follow these as well, to illustrate the same things.

I guess my point is, if you are trying to imply we are a bunch of ignorant boobs, you are flat wrong. If you are skeptical of the overall project I am a-ok and we will show you and everyone else what is instore.

Hope that helps!

Thanks again to all for the interest.

Treat it right and use the right fluids and it will be fine. I never had a problem with the 5MT in my WRX, or my RS. The WRX had 300whp and a lot of track days, and the RS has an '04 STi swap and only sees the garage, trailer or the track.

Honestly its a driver issue, 05 wrx trans with like 80,000 miles and a gt30r.
To many hamfooted, shift as fast as u possibly can guys have blown up the 5speeds. 18g, or what ever he puts in it will be reliable enough. Hell if hes lucky he will find a used 05 wrx trans with some issues he can draft parts from if need be. 5000$ can go really far if your not paying someone 60 - 80$ an hour to wrench on your car.

slvr02scooby

Kendrick nailed it on the head, it's all about the driver. 02 WRX owner right here, 94k on the stock tranny/clutch, and 50k of those miles are 300+ whp/wtq and still no problems yet. And that includes 6 passes down the drag strip and a lot of subaru drives with spirited driving...

Hey Adam, is this project at the warehouse full time? Christina's been telling me about the new place and I wanna come check it out along with this project :)

sounds like a cool project..while the bugeye may never hold a candle to a GC..it definetly goes up a notch with the introduction of the new Impreza..quite possibly one of the gayest looking cars, ever.

This is great. It's about time somebody builds a bugeye. I'm with the others on the whoel trans issue. I've got 86k on my stock clutch and trans, and I do rally-x and whatnot all the time. The car gets driven hard, but it also gets proper maintenance. Take care of it and it'll take care of you. I can't wait to see pics!

Hey guys,

Our new Web Sales Dude will be taking over this project, you will see all the updates and progress very soon.

To clear some things up this build is on a budjet so it will not be an all out time atack car. It will be a fun, quick, reliable daily driver that will pass all emision testing. Part of the budget is going into "refreshing" both the interior and exterior.

If you have any questions feel free to ask myself or Ken (PERRIN_KEN)

THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK GUYS!

John,
Thanks for the intro. Let me fist start off by saying hi to those that have been awaiting this build. After driving the car for the last couple of day I have found it to be a very solid vehicle. In some aspects I like it even more then the newer TR WRX I had.

The first thing that we needed to do was give it a bath (I’ll be posting pics a little later of the clean up and selection process).

I look forward to starting this project, and if anyone has questions feel free to contact me at anytime.

Best,

Ken

Thanks for the push,

As part of our build we wanted to go through all the steps in buying and tuning and share with all. The search and cleaning was the just the first in that process. The second step which we just completed last weekend (post coming tonight) was to change all of the fluids (differential, oil, brakes, etc.). During the big flush we did install our Sub frame Lockdown System and our Differential cover.

Now its time to let the mod’s fly……..

PERRIN_Ken

Just last weekend we put the finishing touches on getting Project $15K ready for the road and mods. I wanted change the fluids in the car not only making it road ready but also giving me the peace of mind that she has the proper fluids in her.

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj39/PERRIN_Ken/Project%2015k%20Rear%20Diff/Project15K002.jpg

While performing this general maintenance we thought it would be a good touch to take advantage of the situation and install two quick differential mods. We installed the PERRIN Rear Differential Cover (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1408153)and the PERRIN Rear Differential/Subframe Lockdown System (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1408017). Feel free to click on the links for a step by step DIY and pics from my install.

The PERRIN Subframe Lockdown System adds rigidity and stability to the rear end diff. This kit eliminates driveline slop, the results can be felt the first time you take off from a stop light at almost any speed. I have to say that this has to be one of the best “bang for your buck” mods I have ever done. While the S.L.S provides instant gratification the PERRIN rear diff cover adds style and functionality. The rear diff cover is made from high strength, heat-treated cast aluminum. We’ve incorporated cooling fins into the design helping to reduce oil temps, in addition to looking good and cooling the oil better we’ve also increased the oil capacity more than 30% over stock.

This general maintenance time also gave me a chance to inspect the under belling of Project $15K. At the time of purchase we were told that it had an aftermarket sway bar which is a plus. However, I quickly noticed that the stock endlinks were present, but not for long. I also noticed that we still had the stock front sway bar. This too will be getting replaced. Over all, this last little bit of maintenance gave me a chance to finish off the cleaning and restoration process in preparation for the fun stuff. It has taken me awhile to get to this point but I’m here and ready to get to work and keep all of you up to date on the process as I/we move forward.

My only question is when you get the parts, are you paying "real world" prices or "vender" prices. Only reason I ask is it would see unrealistic if you used your resources to get parts cheaper for the build up than the normal enthusiast can. Or even if you did pay vender discount prices do you figure in what retail would be?

Also, at the end of every section, can you show what was spent on that section, and the remaining money?
Just an Idea...

Good question,
We will be using “real world” prices for all PERRIN parts and other vender gear. Our goal is to show what anyone can do with $5K of performance parts and a used WRX.

Just finished installing two new mods on the ride so be on the lookout for my next DIY’s

For everyone looking for a little update on Project 15K just this last week we installed the new PERRIN Stealth Exhaust System and the PERRIN Lightened Crank Pulley.

No matter how many times I hear our cars open up I can’t get enough. Add the cool stylings of our stealth exhaust system and you have a mean combo. Be sure to check my DIY on the PERRIN exhaust system (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1426508)and also be on the look out for my DIY on the crank pulley.

Once the rain lets up I’ll get everything clean and take some pics with the new wheels and styealth exhaust. The whole yellow and black theme looks pretty cool.

Thanks

Here is a little more info for everyone out there. The new PERRIN Stealth Exhaust system is made with a thermal powder coating process. The thermal coating not only locks heat in the system to increase exhaust scavenging and flow, it also prevents excessive heat build up under the tunnel of the car.

If there are any question on the system or how to install it please let me know I am always ready to help.

UPDATE: Just received word that Project 15K has seen a minor setback. Due to the local inclement weather of snow and ice, VS. the near race compound tires, Project 15K ate a bit of concrete this morning. The guys in the shop will assess the concerns here shortly. It may be back on the road in a few hours, or ? No matter what we will keep you informed. WE made this project to see what we could do with this type of budget on this type of car. If some of the budget this morning went to a repair, we will also include it in the totals to stay honest to the build.

Thanks again folks for the continued interest!

Thanks guys for the posts. Got the car in the air last night and there is definitely some wrinkled suspension to deal with. Body is a-ok though. First off, that sucks :(

Second, I don't think anyone could logically argue that you would be straying away from the intention of the project by omitting the repair costs in your total. Actually I would argue that by doing so people may not be able to see the full benefit of what 15k could REALLY do.
Now... if you go ahead and add upgraded parts instead of OEM for the damaged components... Those should be added to the bill :)

Chris05STi
01-31-2008, 11:02 PM
Are you going to go with new shocks and struts? GR2's? Also what springs? Prodrives?

jjanari
02-01-2008, 03:39 PM
Yeah, I would not include the cost of repairs as part of the budget, particularly for an accident. you want to showcase what mods you can do w/in the budget and including the repairs, IMHO, diminishes that goal. but it's your car;)

btw, great thread.

Hahahaha. My car suffered the same setback almost exactly a year ago. Bent strut and busted wheel. I say, yes, this should be included in the cost, but it should not be replaced with stock parts. I vote gr2's (what i used) and some good springs (i used hotchkis, great choice btw). Edit: only cost about $280 shipped off ebay, brand new, for everything. Anything else that needs to be replaced should be upgraded too, as aftermarket parts are often cheaper than *NEW* OEM parts, not to mention better. I love this project because it's a reasonable project, and it's not a zillion dollar build.

I agree 100% with kaos200 and the others here. Insurance usually covers this stuff (minus the deductible) and you can usually use this as an opportunity to upgrade the parts with the insurance check. My car was hit in the rear last summer while my car was sitting in the parking lot at my condo, with no way of finding out who did it or how to hold them responsible so I paid out of pocket. I used it as an opportunity to redo the entire body (front JDM and rear OEM 3-piece lips, sideskirts, aerosync mudguards, JDM grille, and painted my c/f hood... kept it all sonic yellow of coarse). I've spent 30% more than your budget on just modding my car (let alone buying it) and I wouldn't hold it against you for not including the accident in your build-up. It's still honest IMHO.

Anyway, after you paid the $10k for the car, pay the deductible, and bought the other goodies so far, how much is left? And what are your plans? I'm sure you have one, right?

Got a couple parts ordered today, unfortunately I am not the only Subaru driver that has had a brush with a curb. Looks like it might take a week to get the new ones in. The last couple of weeks here in the PNW have been a little cold and icy in the morning. As Adam mentioned earlier driving around on race like tires in the snow and ice is never a good idea (but fun in a large parking lot):D.

Here’s a couple pics of my custom work, and no this is not our new N.S.R.S (Negative Steering Response System).

Whats goin' on with this thing? Ownership switch?

Well yes and no. I bought the car originally, then my focus was called away to something else (new baby! an actual baby not a car )

Then Ken needed a car and he wanted to take over the project. But he was unable to sell his 07 TR for the price he needed, so then he handed the keys to John Leitl our Sales Manager (Wholesale Side)

He is looking to take the project on a similar direction, but with a more performance oriented slant vs. Ken and I in terms of being able to truly track the car. He was deciding between a late model MINI or a WRX to use this coming year and this was the better bet. John started with Subarus in 1997 with a 98 2.5RS. In fact he is the one that got ME interested in Subaru.

So he is anxious to get back in the boxer saddle and ride on with Project 15K.

He should be popping on here today with a few other updates, photos etc.

Thanks again folks for being patient! The wait will be worth it!

Well, here is my story. I have a 2005 STi, its basically turning into a Time Attack car basically, well eventually when I am done with it;), but it will be street driven as well. I picked up a 2002 WRX in December for daily driver, '86 Camaro wasn't cutting it anymore and I plan on restoring her. So, I only have plans to really make my '02 Bugeye a Stg2 monster daily driver, basically full exhaust setup. I already have a Invidia V2 DP ready to go in, and I just recently installed the HKS Hi-Power catback. I was just curious since I see a new oil pan, and assume its an STi oil pan so you can run the Perrin headers, how the car would sound. I want to keep this really low budget since its a DD, but I follow this thread to see what really transforms the WRX to make it better.

It is pretty easy. You remove the seats front and rear. The side trim plates, the console and that is it. Slides right out.

Hope that helps!

Thanks again!

For those who care....I took some spy shots of the new set ups. I'll unpixelate them after the race this weekend as we would not want the Subaru Rally Team to see what we built till the race this weekend.

NOT that it is an excuse, but this is what Jeff has been working on for the past little while. And he was under a HUGE deadline to get it all done.

Project 15K is done, final dyno is happening as soon as RockStar is out of the bldg. (WE had ALL three cars in the bldg the past little while. So it has been nuts, trailers, drivers etc. everywhere, late nights etc.)

So in the next week, we will have the dyno results, the performance numbers, the final wrap up and then the car will be for sale HERE:

http://www.perrinperformance.com/shared/images/forums/grand_opening/event2.png (http://www.perrinperformance.com/pages/show/89)

Some come check it all out. This has been a GREAT project, me and my staff ALL had a great time and I know you guys will be happy with the results.

I do apologize that another project bumped this one for a bit, but behind the scenes it has taken near center stage.

Thanks again!

Anyway, I have started a thread on the REAL Power chapter of this build.

So, is it on stock springs?

Is there a complete MODs list somewhere too?

You're front page looked like it had alot of initial energy, but now... theres soooo many blank chapters...

john will have a full write up on that soon as well. The car is NOT on stock springs or struts, brakes etc. Separate chapter!

None of the chapters are perse' blank, but just delaying in publication.

Just drove it yesterday and WOW!

(Also, purchased an SLS kit last night! Did some research, and it's the best deal I can find for what's included :D :D)

Any estimate on what has been spent so far?

With the brakes and suspension going on this week, the total for everything including the purchase price of the car is $15,250 +/-.

So we stayed well within a reasonable budget, and I think most will agree the results are REALLY impressive! 290 WHP on a streetable car? YIKES! Plus reliable, inexpensive and stunning condition overall. The car looks nearly new!

Well if this project were called "Perrin BugEye40K" I think we'd definitely be seeing more poo shooting out here, but since their funds are obviously very restricted and it seems that their staff is pretty strung out across the board I think we can manage. Even for how long we've been waiting.

Patience is a virtue grasshopper.

very funny! But seriously, we are asking $15000.00 for the car. Make a reasonable offer and off it goes! That price does include the $1000 worth of race/street tires and $800 wheels. So it should have been $16800. but we are discounting. Plus if someone wants to bring their own wheels / tires we can go further.

Thanks again!
