View Full Version : Setup w/o built block Question

I have seen a lot of setups through these forums and others like i-club and iwsti. It seems like there are a lot of people out there running rotated setups without a built block. Many of you know that I am a Ring addict and that I track my car on Nurburgring on a weekly basis (until I hit the wall two weeks ago). I decided to upgrade my current setup when my car gets out of the shop. This is the setup I have ordered:

Ultimate Racing GT3076R .82 AR Turbo Kit w/ 44mm Tial EWG
Ultimate Racing V1 FMIC Kit
HKS SSQV
Agency Power Crank Pulley (<-may or may not put this on)
Subydude short shifter and shifter bushings
PE 850cc Side feed injectors
Walbro 255 Fuel pump
APS TGV's

The car will be tuned at Scubyclinic in the UK or GP tuning in Luxemberg. I will not be running H2O/Meth injection and I don't run race gas. Super plus is 93 octane here and that's all I plan on running.
Does anyone see any problems running this setup without a built block? Is anyone out there running this setup or similar w/o a built block? All ideas/ suggestions are welcome. I am thinking I may have over engineered this a bit and may downgrade to an FP Green setup.

i do suggest a meth kit, big turbos love high octane gas. keep your turbo happy. dont make it use piss water.

Not sure why this thread got moved here. I guess the moderaters don't know that "w/o" means "without". Well if anyone in this thread has any input please let me know.

do you have the usdm sti (2.5) or edm (2.0)?
93 is what we have in fla.
i have seen & tuned an 05 sti to 423 whp & ft-lbs @ 22 psi.
that was with a gt35r with 0.82. full boost by 4600.

gt30r will spool faster but might not give you the topend or
max hp numbers.

seen & helped tune a 2.35 with gt30r to 395whp @ 24 psi.
it was an ultimate racing kit also.

when your pushing boost level, it would be a nice safety
net to have water/meth to eliminate any knock. if tuned
correctly you will see gains of 30~35 whp & tq.

Thanks for the input Jaxscuby. I have the USDM 2.5L. I didn't go with the GT35 because I just felt it was too big for what I need. As you see in my first post, I am concerned about the GT30 being too big. I need the faster spool up. I don't do 1/4, It just doesn't do it for me like a track can. My plan is to get the car into the high 300's for whp. I think anything over 400whp will be a little too much on the track. Yeah I know, who ever says "too much"? The STI is an amazing car on Nurburgring. There is not much that can hang with me besides Lotus and Porsche GT3, and bikes in the straights, of course. I have plenty of speed in the corners but I'm looking for more in the straights. I need to find that horsepower Nirvana.
I didn't really want to run meth/water simply because I am not too familiar with the systems and on a daily driver, I think it would be more of a pain in the arse. I know they can be setup to deliver at a certain RPM, I just don't know enough about them.

check the aquamist website, 2d system with dds3.
fail safe, only comes on once you exceed low boost.
which can be set by you. mine is set for 7 psi.
when your at the track you wouldn't dropping below
4.5~5k rpms so no real problem with lag.
your choice of gt30r with 0.82 will be a good daily drive.
but the gt35r with 0.82 will allow you to pull past
most everything you see on the track. you will need
to think about upgrading your braking system..

I really don't think you need injection, but you could certainly use it, either for additional safety, power, or both.

Provided you don't run too much timing up top and keep the boost to a reasonable level, you should be able to get a lot of trouble free miles on pump gas, even at the Ring. I would, however, throw in a few gallons of race fuel before heading out on the track - a detonation buffer will be a very good thing on those long pulls in 5th and 6th. With a properly tuned GT30 set-up, and a decent run, you're going to push the gear-limited top speed of the car with no extra's. Is 170mph+ fast enough for you?

Jaxscuby and flycaster, I appreciate the info. I have upgraded my brakes already with pads and new 2 piece rotors but I am thinking about making the move to front 6-pot and rear 4-pots. On the Ring, braking is as/ if not more important than acceleration. I rode around the Ring in my friends Lotus Elise and he burns into the corners so hot it's scary then mashes the brakes and hits the throttle. It's a freakin' go-kart that slows down better than it accellerates and nothing except a GT3 can catch it.
As far as gas is concerned, you guys don't know how good you have it in the states. In Europe I'm paying roughly $8.55 a gallon for 93. Regular 89 octane is about $6.75 a gallon. Race gas (100) is about $15 a gallon. And to think every lap around the Ring in my STI burns a 1/4 tank of gas.

So, let me get this straight: once a week you get to take a couple of laps on one of the premier stretches of windy pavement in the whole friggin' world, as fast as you can possibly go, and burn what...$100 worth of fuel? Bummer.

 :D

^ I was having a similar question. My GT35R kit and my UR FMIC Kit is just sitting in my room. I am trying to sell my other wrx to build a motor for the new STI. Intel then would I be able to install the kit and de-tune it to maybe 375-400whp on the stock motor, 93oct, and still be able to have fun with it without worrying about breaking things? Just intel I get the new motor built? NOt a thread jack, just thought it was similar situation. Thanks

drewwrxrogers, From what people have been telling me here and on IWSTI, it sounds like you'll be fine detuned.

Yeah thats what I was thinking. I mean my motor has over 90k on it but It wont have to hold the power for to long and if its de-tuned so to speak and no more than 400whp I wouldnt see why it would not hold up for a few months. But at the same time if it does blow it wont be worth as much. Block should still be good though huh. Just a tough choice. The wrx im selling has a nice 20g setup on it that I thought about putting on intel the motor is built but it makes it hard to sell with now turbo setup unless I put the vf-39 setup on to replace it. Which is a better option?

Hmm, I am not sure what you're asking. Ultimately the best thing to do is have patience. Sell the WRX the way it is. That way you don't have to spend money retuning everything, everytime you change up. Build your motor and install it in the STI
