It's really awesome for a wagon. Not so awesome for an Impreza WRX STI. :sadbanana:

Yeah, no. The interior looks great though. It would look good as a Suzuki.

I like it.. It LOOKS FUN, and aggressive. And we know the performance is amazing, and the platform is extremely capable as are all imprezas.

I saw a regular 2008 wrx hatch on teh road yesterday, it was the FIRST one Ive seen, and I was able to spot it coming at me almost naturally.. So its uniquely subaru, but that also means, its uniquely ugly haha. Noone liked the bugeyes when i first bought mine either.

Based on the first 4 generations of the vehicle. Also, I wasn't talking about performance, sure it's incrementally 'better'. I just don't like wagons. Also a stock one is not in the same performance leauge as my car, but that's a personal attack which I'm above.

interior looks niiiice, exterior not so much. its an ok looking car, but i nothing grabs me and i really dont identify with it at all like i would with all other current model subarus. if its a great performer it will have a bit of an appeal to me, but it will still be the bastard child of the subaru family.

WOW. That is plainly and simply awful. Damn, I really wanted to buy another STi when mine dies in about 100k miles or so...now, that ain't happenin'. WAY more stealth (which is nice for cops and stoplight drags) but that's the only thing I can positively comment on. This heralds the death of a beautiful vehicle.

Based on what? It will spank your STi.

What're the stats, Nate? HP, ft-lbs, weight, 0-60, 1/4 mile...forget it I'll search.

wagons ftw...boo to all you wagon haters...I am planning to trade in my 02 bugeye for one of these beasts...overall, i like everything about it - exterior and interior however it looks a little round in the back...i would of made it a little sharper like the previous wagon models but that is just my opinion...how much will this thing cost with the dealer markup?

I hope this poll doesn't go to SOA..... turning it into a mazda"ish" hatch with tribeca tails def. doesn't do anything for me or any of the WRX/STi fans I know. 1st gen, they had the right idea. 2nd gen (with its different grill/headlight/scoop changes just look bad@$$. I guess I'll have to rethink the subaru customer loyalty program unless I'm able to grab one of the last remaining '07 STI's.

I like it. The WRX was disappointingly bland, but when the WRC prototype was unveiled, I was excited about the wide-body look. I feared it wouldn't carry over to the STi, but it did! Good job, Subaru. Still, not enough of an advance to replace my (3000 lb) bugeye.

You might consider mechanically restoring your current car. That's what I am doing based on the outlook for the brand. I am pretty satisfied. Well, that and I am almost done too. about 95% done. I almost forgot how well it drove when I bought it. Beating the hell out of it for so long had my STi on it's last legs until recently.

I don’t care for it much, I am glad they decided to try the wagon, but it is too reminiscent of the Mazda 3 and the BMW Z roadster (obviously other than the 5-door configuration). I think it is a nice starting point, but when it comes to the states I think it would be better if they refine it a little. I like Sedans better. Just my opinion though...

do we even know for sure what features will be on the USDM STI? Many times we've seen JDM cars that have all these bells and whistles but when it reaches the USDM, all those gadgets are gone... Im talking about those pop up headlight washers and the smart key/push button start.

I would be more interested in this car but i feel like Subaru is just not keeping up with the times... im sure this car will get horrible fuel economy, something that could have been addressed with direct injection.... I just hope that eventually the STI will meet up with its other competition in terms of content, not that thats what matters, but it does play a role for sure. I like how it looks though.

I like it, but I wish it was a sedan. The hatch/wagon does not appeal to me, especially the rear, even when the tails and chrome are fixed... It looks boxy and crappy in the back. Maybe a mid-waist spoiler like on the old GF8's will make it better.

I'm considering buying an 08 WRX sedan at some point and using my mad skills on it.

I think it looks pretty dang good. The only thing that repulses me are those god- awful 5 spoke wheels and the tail lights. Fairly easy fix, just get the BBS wheels and get some vinyl cover like they are making now for the tail lights.

Most definately getting one in a few years.

I like it a lot too

1. Much more practical
2. Subaru designed it from a performance standpoint
3. Ricers and cops will leave you alone without that ginormous wing.
4. Subaru is more reliable than BMW :diaf:

Love that harmless look, but a  inside
BTW, glad they got rid of that front fender gap from the previous years. Now you can drop the car nicely w/o killing the F/R load balance.

Looks ok but only in the STi version. I think it has a little BMW X 3 in it. Citroen look as well. I will take time to get use to. Also when sales dont look so good next year their going to scramble to change it up.

I don't like it, it's not my cup of tea in the looks department. However, having been away from my Subaru and driving numerous rentals, I'd have to say that probably nothing else will really compare as far as it being a reliable, no-nonsense, well-handling machine. I'm happy that the STi kept the flares and some of the aggressiveness of the previous generations, but I would have liked to see a much more sporty hatch and a return to some of the Subaru WRC design cues (like the personal pizza sized fogs, more blistered flares vs. rounded flares, hodd vents, etc.). Meh, to each his own. I thought my bugeye was a departure from the previous generation, but once I drove it I fell in love. Maybe history will repeat itself, or the design will have further evolved by the time I am ready to upgrade in a few years.

STIFLYBY_RANGER
10-31-2007, 08:01 PM
if the same design were made into a sedan .. i think it would be one of the most aggressive and stylish sport sedans on the road today. the interior is a huge plus to me over past models and performance is right on key with subaru innovation, but i have to say i agree with the bulk of the group i do not believe the wagon look is good for the sti... i could also see a better rim with more and thinner spokes...

THE ONLY REALLY GOOD THING I COULD SAY IS IF YOU LINED UP THE MAZDA AGAINST THIS HANDS DOWN THE SUBARU WOULD STILL BE THE #1 CHOICE!

I'm beginnning to like it more and more, just like previous Subaru models. I may look into buying one in the future, after I pay off my 04. We'll see how the aftermarket works its magic on them. Da-Yam that looks sweet! Was that an 8000 rpm red-line in one of those pictures? Sorry but I gotta say this baby is going to be hot. Its dripping in funky Subie perfection, if you ask me.

I like it way better than the gaping-mouth-Darth-Vader-look Evo.

Could never bear to trade my bug-eye wagon or Forester for it though. . . dang, looks like one there's going to have to be three Scoobies lined up in the driveway :D

Hey ace. SOA wants us to call it a hatch. But, it's got FOUR doors ~ guess what, that's a 'wagon'. If you want to call it a hatch, then tell SOA to make you a TWO door hatch!

I'll keep calling it a 'wagon', 'cause it is! :diaf:

How could you possibly know that. Do you think his STi is stock? I don't think I have me another STi owner that didn't have a bunch of power and suspension mods. And I have met alot of other STi owners. What a silly and unfounded assertion.

It's still a hatchback, all of them. I was always puzzled as to why it's been called a wagon. I've never heard VW call a 4 door Golf a wagon, how 'bout you?

Oh, let's say for the last three decades this has been the 'rule'. Is that enough of a precedent? Pick up any Car & Driver, Autoweek, Road and Track from the 70's -90's, it's just the way it is. Like a sedan 2 door is a 'coupe' and a 4 door is a 'sedan'. A two door hatchback is a 'hatch' and a four door hatchback is a 'wagon' A manufacture can call it whatever they want, it doesn't matter. The rules have been out there for a very, very long time...

My point was don't sound like a common 'know-it-all' and flame so\meone else for calling it what it is!

Looks like Subaru has hired the Ford SVT focus design team to design them a cute little car.....

All I can say to Subaru is this.....

Why build a car that has to grow on people for them to barely tolerate it?

Why make something that doesn't fit the market of whom you are looking to sell the car to?

It costs the same to build an ugly car as it does to build a pretty car.....

Who is the come-out-of-retirement Gm or Ford Designer who told you that no matter what you built, your loyal followers would buy it????

I have now owned a race car bugeye(now sold) and I currently own an 04 Forester XT; I will not be purchasing one of the current generation WRX cars, or the STI version of the car.

I am 29 years old and about to be a family man...

I am in the middle class as far as salary goes......

Most likely, the next vehicle I will buy is another Forester XT or a Tribeca

That is if Subaru doesn't decide to make the rest of their vehicles look like a car that came from another company 4 years ago and give it mediocre or the same performance as the previous, good-looking cars before.

So, to sum it all up:

SUBARU, please look around and see what your buyers like, not what Honda or Toyota buyers like. Subaru has the ability to be better in the ways that matter to true Subaru lovers. Just think how many cars they could sell if the standard, bottom of the line WRX had a 280hp 2.5L and a standard six speed (with no Dccd). The STI should have a 2.5L with forged factory pistons and AVCS on Intake AND Exhaust cams making at least 330hp in factory tune with an upgraded six speed with DCCD.

Why do I say such things?

Because, if the WRX had 280 hp, it would be the class leader in that market with the GTI, Mazdaspeed 3, etc. If it had a 6 speed, IT WOULDN'T break as a stock vehicle or with light mods.... hmmm.... there is a novel idea for a sporty factory car....

If the STI had 330hp and forged pistons, it would also be the class leader.... The Evo would be left behind, and seriously, who is the other competitor to the STI besides the EVO? A forged bottom end would leave it as it should have been all along, to the level where it can hold 450+whp on the stock engine. The dual AVCS will allow better mileage and EPA ratings and more horsepower over a wider powerband..

So, there you have it. I know it seems simple. If a car is a performance car, THAT IS WHAT YOUR BUYERS EXPECT FROM YOU AS A COMPANY.

I don't want to be ashamed that I own a Subaru, and I am proud to have owned my bugeye and to currently own my Forester XT, but I don't know if I am proud that the Subaru flagship is a Focus RS knockoff with the same drivetrain that has been in the car since 2004 in the US.

Rant over.....

GOOD LUCK TO SUBARU with their new "Target Market".....

try keeping up with Toyota Camry and Honda Civic for NVH and quality.....

If only things were as easy as you say huh?

The engineering has already been done. It is as easy as I say.... that is the funny part.... It is because everyone keeps Looking at the Emperors new clothes..... They are blind to the truth.

Subaru goons just decided that the weaksauce legacy GT /Outback XT engine with the plastic intake and plastic intercooler are the way to improved power!!! wow..... what a freaking joke.

Subaru could use the current STI 2.5L EJ257 in the WRX and detune the boost, don't paint an STI emblem on the intercooler, etc....

Use a 6 speed transmission with a standard 50/50 split non-adjustable center diff....

The dual AVCS is already on the Japanese WRX cars... check out the new engines info.....

They did forged pistons in the V7 2.0L engines and found great success with engine that could live happily at 8,000+ RPM and 450whp+ on a stock block.

There is nothing keeping them from doing forged pistons on the new STI engines.... cost is marginally a difference on the engine.... it costs approximately $250 more to a manufacturer to have forged pistons versus cast pistons....

Every Supra engine came with forged pistons, NA AND TURBO.... they didn't rattle and they can live at 750whp on the NA-TUrbo conversion and 950whp+ on the Turbo engines as stock engines....

Personally, I absolutely love it. I followed the introduction of the bug-eye when I bought my RSX back in '02. I actually thought the bug-eye was quite cool looking even though everyone seemed to hate it. Then the STI was revealed and really got me excited about Subarus. My '05 certainly wasn't a pretty car but it could never be mistaken for a girl's car like the RSX. :) What I absolutely loved about my 05 though was how it drove. Sure it had its quirks and clunks but it also had "soul" and every drive put a smile on my face. Hell, in time I even loved the wing.

With all that said, the new STI absolutely kicks ass. I don't have an aversion to hatchbacks like some weirdos here and the fact that the car has been improved is awesome. Once the new STI is released next year, I'm down to buy one. Normally I avoid first model years like the plague but this car isn't completely brand new if you think about it. The engine and tranny have been continually refined for the last 5 years and the only real "unknown" is the rear suspension. Plus, I've been hitting the track with a friend and his 04 and he has a blast with it and it drives great, even though the 05+ should technically be a better car.

So yeah, I'm in for buying one next year. The only deal breaker would be if Canada doesn't get the option for Recaros and if the stock seats suck. Other than that, it's all good. :)

Its nice don't get me wrong, but i was always a sedan and coupe kinda guy. I honestly think it would have been better to just do that front end with the lip on the 4 door, and have a 2 door variant.

And to the people arguing about whether its considered a wagon or a hatch, there are many 4 door hatches out there, and plus many people got mad since they canceled the wagons, so i guess you can call it what you want.

But overall, the numbers, specs, interior, front end, and overall impressions of the car for me is real nice. i just don't like the fact that its a hatch, but with a suptle drop, that red film on the tails, and a nice mesh or sport grille, it'll look good, wrx or sti.

I like the looks. I really like the idea of having lots of control over the drivetrain. My only gripe about the new STI is the same as previous models, they are so stinking heavy. It does no good to have 300hp in a vehicle that weighs 3200+lbs. Sorry but "Sporty-Tuner" Compact Cars should be under 3000lbs. Just to put this weight in perspective, most of those "crossover/car-ute/mini-suv" things range between 3200-3700lbs and some have anywhere from 190-upper 200hp. Someone please put these cars on a diet or give them more muscle. Rant over.

First pics I thought "eh, not so much" but in the 2.4 sec it took for me to get to the later ones it grew on me and now I like it. I would LOVE to see a sedan version with similar styling cues. Now then, let's get some specs!

I like how the impreza sti looks. For one, It appears that they have achieved an almost european appearance. I like the new facia and sides of the sti but the back still needs to be reverted back to the sedan or coupe look. The hatch just doesnt do it for me. I am sure that many agree that the new sti looks fantastic. I hope that subaru will put more effort with listening to our opinions of the enthusiasts instead of the statistics and sales reps. The new sti is coming1 Only time will tell if it is a flop or a success.

Don't be blaming the salesmen ~ we are in the same boat with you and most of us drive the Impreza's we love (out of 10 salesmen @ our dealership 8 drive Imprezas). SOA is on there own on this new design push ~ sink or swim.

I guess I'll have to rethink the subaru customer loyalty program unless I'm able to grab one of the last remaining '07 STI's.

i believe the point of a front page crediting is so that it does get a large amount of responses and SOA can judge how their current enthusiasts like their decisions.

Me? I love it.

Drop the stupid tails, add an option for a slightly bigger wing, delete the silver peice in the grill and you have yourself a really mean machine. I will seriously be considering a 2nd gen hatch STi to replace my 05 if i am still in my "boy racer" mood when its available.

Personally, I love the 2005 STi design the best among all the STi versions that have made it to our shores. The 04 and 05's were the models I fell in love with. However, it cannot be argued that this is the most sophisticated interior Subaru has ever put into an Impreza. Seeing as this car is much more functional (ie. folding seats and extra cargo room to name a couple) it is an easy sell for me, and I will be buying one around May or June. I think Subaru have done an incredible job with this car and although we all nit-pick about something, I'm sure it will be a real treat. I just can't wait until we get final word about what exactly is/isn't coming to the U.S. Until then, I speculate and wait patiently.

Whenever I see an older WRX or STI there is no mistaking what it is.

The 08's have lost that in the new styling, now its just another hatch that blends in with all the other hatches out there.

I am disapointed that JDM options will not come to our side of the pond.

When I test drove the 08 WRX it felt soft and had lost that hard edge appeal that my 06 WRX has.

I will be test driving the new Evo X and STI and will decide then.

I only hope the new 08 STI performs better in the WRC as these past two years have been very disapointing for me as a Subie fan.

i think SOA will love this large array of opinions. i think its only a matter of time. i remember how so many people HATED the bugeyes when they came out and now the bugeye's are loved by many if not all. people thought that about my pignose and now everyone thinks it looks good.

but for me, and many will disagree but

(06-07) > (02-03) > (92-01) > (08-?) > (04-05)

^Thats just where i'm at right now i used to love bugeye's the most, but to each their own. subaru's have never been the best on looks, it was only the true subaru fans that really appreciated the looks, i'm sure this new hatch will chime in and grow on us soon enough.

And as long as the dam car performs, its doesn't need to look like a work of art.
And to the guy who compared the sti to a bmw. lol its sort of in the subaru's favor since it's being stacked up to a bmw. Yea the 135i is going to be fast, but honestly its oddly placed in bmw's lineup, if you look at it, its a friggin shrunken 335i. its a midgit 2 door  . i'm not a fan of the looks, but for 35k its a dam good bargain.

Personally, I bought the '05 because when I saw the '06 i freaked out due to the weird looking nose. Now i'm kinda growing to like it, but still not quite there. It seems all the non Subaru people I know prefer the '04/05 styling to the rest. It's not to say it's pretty, but of all the choices the '04/05 came out on top.

I like the 02/03 after they have the koji style headlights and other exterior work. Stock, Im not liking.
The '06/07 took some while to get used to. When I first saw it, i thought it was grotesque, but now it looks meaner when compared to the '08s and '02/03
The '08 STI is growing on me but wont be on my list. I like the side flares/lines. The rear needs to ditch the chrome and altezza lights. It's been overdone on Hondas and IS300s.
Front needs some work to make it look more aggressive (possibly remove the chrome and removed the curve lines at the nose). The direction they took will not make heads move. People won't realize it's an STI until they look directly in the front or look at the little emblem at the back. That's one thing I will miss with the upcoming styling.

As far as styling is concerned my list goes:

98/01 > 04/05 > 06/07 > 08 > 02/03

The car should perform well. It is Subaru of America's cream of the crop after all.

The front grill looks bad. The chrome makes it look cheap, like something GM would do to a car to give it "Bling", as if a bling is even cool to someone under 30 years old these days.
Likewise the chrome at the rear, the taillights looks bad, like the old cheesy "Altezza" aftermarket lights that guys used to put on their Honda Civics about 6 years ago.

When I see it from the side, i think that I'm looking at a mazda 3, and when I see it from the rear I think I'm looking at a Ford Focus. Sometimes it even reminds me of a *gagging* Corolla!!

I know that the design is to make the car better for WRC but it really doesn't appeal to me anymore.... I'll go with the Evo instead if we could get it in canada.

Also, Subaru if you read this, why the hell are your cars more expensive in Canada when our dollar is at $1.05 vs the US? Gimme a break!!!

Obviously, I'll need to drive both cars before signing, but at this point I'm leaning towards the Evo X GSR.

I could care less about the STI's looks -- it's the high cowl and lousy seats that bug me the most.

Not to mention the fact that the USDM STI will have a 6700rpm redline: combine that with 6 short forward gears and you're going to be very busy shifting.

Im not a fan of the new bodystyle. Up until the '08 model when you saw an sti on the street it could only be one thing...a subaru wrx sti. I have seen a few 08 wrx's on the streets and have second guessed myself as to if they were subarus or toyotas or something else. I respect subaru for trying to do something new, but they shouldn't have followed so closely to what other cars body styles are starting to look like...im just glad i have an '07 wrx...

I'm not digging the Mazda Speed3 vibe. I saw the new WRX hatch right next to a Speed3 and was extremely surprised how similar they looked. I'll have to see a new STI in person to decide my final verdict - it's not too bad in black.

I am a fan of the new WRX sedan though! Saw one in my town about two months ago, and despite the initial 'oh another Hyundai' reaction (yeah, sorry!), and it's a lot slicker than I thought it might be.

Nope, they are all four door wagons...

OK... if I am so confused, what is a car with a trunk and FOUR doors? A sedan, right? So with your logic a two door with a trunk is still a sedan. Nope. Wrong.

Trunk w/4drs = Sedan
Trunk w/2drs = Coupe
Hatch w/2 drs = Hatch
Hatch w/4 drs = Wagon

Get over it. It's auto history... you can't change it. Sorry. :sadbanana:

if it's "auto history" you failed the class.

sedan and coupe are old words (i.e. before your time) refering to the window/roof structure of the car. a sedan has a C pillar, a coupe does not.

and since you WILL argue cause you're smarter than everyone else, google "2 door sedan". much to your amazment, there will be results! OMFG!

and since i DONT know it all, here's my guess at wagon v hatch.
wagon = apreciable(sp?) distance between C and D pillar
hatch = very short distance between them.

why? because older wagons had enough room for a third row of (sometimes rewards facing) seats. hatches traditionally leave you with 1 foot give or take of room behind the rear seats.
