View Full Version : De-fog switch..does it light up??
GooseMan 01-21-2002, 09:52 AM mods...feel free to move this thread...I have NO IDEA where its supposed to go....
Stupid question of the day: :D
Does the defog switch on a GC8 light up when the lights are on? I'm not referring to the little orange light that lights up when its acticvated...I mean the little white defog drawing....does it illuminate? I never noticed...and if it did, it doesnt anymore! :(
EDIT: BTW, I meant the de-fog for the REAR window, the switch next to the hazard switch....just to clarify ;)
Evil-Mastermind 01-21-2002, 11:27 AM Nope, just the wonky little orange light. rest easy my bruddah. :)
GooseMan 01-21-2002, 11:49 AM OK, cool....I thought mine was broken. You know what? It SHOULD light up! The reason I took note of this is because this weekend I was looking around for the switch and I couldnt see it. I know where it is by memory, but I started to wonder if it ever was illuminated. oh well. :(
beethoven 01-21-2002, 12:05 PM I think I know what you mean...at night you can't see the damn switch!
BJamerican 01-21-2002, 05:36 PM Are you sure it's not supposed to light up? The defog switch on my Legacy lights up... However the backlighting on the cruise control switch burnt out . I just replaced the backlights in the heater control not too long ago. Does anybody know if the green bulbs in the switches can be replaced also? Subarus have very widespread problems with instrument lighting burning out.
I was also wondering about the back lights for the rear Defroster, Hazard Light and the Cruise lights. I replaced a bad switch for the Defroster for $36.00 :( . But now I have no back light for the speedometer and Tacheometer. I have cheked the fuses and they are all ok. But now I need to pull out the dashboard to check the lights.
Dang its too cold to work on my car (no Garage) :(

MagicMT 01-22-2002, 04:15 AM A related question: When you press the rear windshield defroster, is it supposed to go off after a certain period of time (few mins) ?? Because I turn it on, and after a few mins, it will turns off by itself, then I have to turn it on again... Pretty annoying.

footypaul 01-22-2002, 10:04 AM It doesnt lite up in the new models either, just that funky orange light when activate. Like you, i know where it is by memory.
GooseMan 01-22-2002, 11:52 AM Hrm...thats odd!
My defogger stays on till I turn it off! Isnt that bad? Doesnt it burn out or something? All other cars have a timer for some reason....
Yeah, the orange backlight burned out a while ago on mine, I need to change it. I never did see an indicator on the dash for it though.
As far as the defrost, yeah it goes off after a while. Sux if you want it to stay on. :)

Snappy 01-22-2002, 04:27 PM Ummm... My WRX rear defrost has both a backlight and an indicator light, and I'm pretty sure my old RS did too. Sometimes you can't see them (backlight) because of other light sources outside the car...
IIRC the cruise main, fog light, hazard switch, A/C, and rear defog are all backlit, there is a light in the driver's window switch (AUTO.) The power mirror switch is unlit.
Now I have to go check. I always thought it did, but I don't really know. Ya it goes off automatically to prevent itself from burning out.

Silver2000RS 01-22-2002, 06:24 PM My Defog & Hazard switches are backlit. I'll have to check my fog & cruise switches.
edit: My fog & cruise switches are also backlit.
My defog, hazard, fogs, and cruise all light up. :)

GooseMan 01-23-2002, 09:39 AM Really? My defog switch only lights up orange when pressed...otherwise it doesnt glow. My Hazard button does.....which is weird that they'd make one light up and one not......
hmmmmmm:confused:
Maybe you Canadians get screwed?

GooseMan 01-23-2002, 08:19 PM probably! just like the case of our crappy-ass old school Canadian bumpers :(
subaru_owner 12-30-2002, 08:17 PM I own a 2000 Impreza RS and my defrost switch has a light in it.:)
munkis 12-30-2002, 08:46 PM the cruise, fog, hazzard and defrost, shoud all be back lit, and also have an orange light when depressed (not sure about the hazzard w/ an orange light though)
my cruise 'cruise' part is burnt out.
from what it seems these tiny little bulbs dont last very long.
the rear deffrost should click off after its been on for a minute or two, its to keep the rear grid from over heating and the grid lines breaking.
Ill have to look at the wiring diagrams at work 2morrow to see how the 'timer' fucntion works, weather its relay (my first guess) or a circuit breaker.
