View Full Version : 03 WRX to a Forester ej257 from Gruppe-S
lo0nY 11-10-2007, 02:02 AM aite guys...i've been a honda guy all my life, rebuilding engines from the ground up.... i didn't know what i was getting my self into taking apart my 03 wrx to do pistons and rods.....
to make a long story short, a local shop, tuned the car, and and rebuilt the motor and blew up....then rebuilt it again
i went ahead and order the ej257 from Gruppe S with the Cam position sensor adapter...and basically took my knowledge of honda, and swap everything i could over from the old motor to the new, from the runners and all and using the old engine harness...i'm not planning on running the AVCS (for now), everything's in, starts up.....but i'm throwing two codes, one is for the 02 and one is the cam position sensor...i swapped the cam sensor three times, cleared the code....nothing.....running into the same problem.....check the wires and everything...but the car goes into limp mode....anything above 3k rpm the car boggs like a fuel cut off...the car drives fine under 3k... searched and searched.....
it's been 5 longs months...and my wrx is still sitting there....car only has 9,000 miles....would like to see it drive again....and enjoy it
anyone have any ideas what my problem can be? the cams do have the marks for the sensor to pick up...hooked up a scope to the sensor, and it does pick up and have a normal wave...
lo0nY 11-11-2007, 08:23 PM anyone have any ideas?
lo0nY 11-19-2007, 03:42 AM i can't be the only one with this problem?
StupidFastWagon 11-20-2007, 12:48 AM I would find someone that can use the Tactrix cable to turn off the code so that your car will stay out of limp mode...
uberspeed 11-20-2007, 11:16 AM I did this swap on my '02 WRX 2 years ago. My engine had the cam position boss on it and I just had to drill and tap it. My cam also had the pickup marks on it.
I have no idea what the cam position sensor adaptor looks like. I had no idea there was such a thing. I would point towards this sensor being the culprit. Are you sure the intake cam has the timing bosses that get picked up by the cam sensor? Is the sensor in the correct spot? The sensor is pretty sensitive and needs to be located pretty acurately.

lo0nY 11-22-2007, 03:21 AM what is a Tactrix cable ? does the software and cable allow you to bypass the code? i used a scan tool to clean the code, but it still pops up
The cam does have the "boss marks" it does pickup, accord to my snap on scope...it has a wave....the adapter came with the engine from gruppe-s...it's basically a bolt on adapter, i swapped the cam sensor three times already....still have the code
lo0nY 12-01-2007, 01:52 AM any other ideas?
shadyrex 12-03-2007, 02:43 PM A Google search found this:

RS22b 12-04-2007, 01:17 PM What year did the 257 come out of?
Do you have the old WRX parts around still?
Basically check this:
Top cam gear for timing marks on back. compare this to the stock one from the wrx motor. You dont need to pull of the cam gear to do this you just need to pull the cover off and feel with your fingers the back of the cam gear. Once you find a mark compare that to the spokes and other markings of the cam. Go all the way around the cam gear and find all the marks and make sure they are in the proper locations. The chances are you might be getting a wave form, but it might not be the proper one in respect to the wrx ecu reading, hence throwing a code.
Im assuming that the marks might be close to where they should be in order to just get the car running, but might cause some issues if it isnt in the proper location.
I have swapped an 05 STi motor into a 02 wrx doing just what you have with no issues once i put the old wrx cam sensor in its proper location.
lo0nY 12-08-2007, 11:56 PM still got the old motor, the cams gear have identical markings on them, the motor is from a 07 Forester.....i was thinking it could be the crank sensor throwing the cam sensor code? because i know they both work together? could that be the case?
lo0nY 01-03-2008, 12:17 AM anyone have any other ideas? before i push the car into a lake?
wrxfactor 01-03-2008, 12:06 PM Tell us your location so you can take it to a reputable shop.

lo0nY 07-03-2008, 02:04 AM back from the dead.....my girl is tripping...the cars been sitting forever now... has anything successful done the swap?? im thinking about rolling it down the street...and blowing it up and collecting $$$ from insurance...
i don't want too...but no one in houston wants to help me out
lo0nY 02-12-2009, 02:00 AM back up...one last hope.....about to get married....and the fiance wants it running or gone!!!
eleos1177 02-14-2009, 12:26 AM have you posted this in any other forums... ie. 2.5, impreza, etc...?
More people looking in there. Also, read around a bit and see what people in hear have experience... and PM them.

lo0nY 08-18-2009, 05:00 PM one last try....any ideas?
Deraj_53 08-18-2009, 05:54 PM Well if the sensor is putting out a good wave then its not the sensor.
Check the grounds on the motor. Make sure they are on good.
I would check the signal again from the ECU side to make sure the signal is making it to the ECU.
lo0nY 08-18-2009, 05:59 PM the wave looks weak...i check the connection to the ecu everything is fine.... check the grounds? how many ground are there from the motor to the chassis/frame?
