Production difficulties with hi-tech SST gearbox may delay Evo X's arrival

The six-speed semi-automatic gearbox is one of the most capable on the market. But according to our sources, its complexity has meant mass-producing the unit is proving more difficult than expected.

Initially, it was thought that production of cars with the transmission – which is similar to VW’s twin-clutch DSG gearbox – would begin this month in Japan. However, insiders now believe that because of reliability glitches, the first SST models won’t roll out of the factory until early next year, delaying their arrival in the UK until summer. Officially, Mitsubishi claims that there are no problems. The company insists that the Evo X will be available with both the SST gearbox and a more conventional five-speed manual unit from its UK launch in March.

A first for the company, SST – which stands for Sport-Shift Transmission – offers the driver three increasingly responsive modes, ranging from Normal to Sport to Super-Sport, with the last of these holding the engine to the red line before changing up. The driver can take over at any time thanks to F1-style steering wheel-mounted paddles.

The gearbox will ensure the car steals a march on its arch-rival, Subaru’s Impreza STI, which is only available with a conventional manual transmission. Sales of the Evo X get underway in spring, with prices from £30,000.

Ill take Mitsu (Japanese designs, not the Eclipse/Galant/Endevor) quality over VW any day. That being said, VW doesnt look as cheap on the interior side.

I'll believe it when we see delays. This car is already being delivered. autoexpress.co.uk isn't exactly the last word in auto news.

don't let this little article which is just asserting information set anything in concrete. Take it with a grain of salt and do more research.

On the Evo forums, the delay has been described being attributed more to the manufacturing process being difficult and more time consuming than anticipated when mass produced rather than to quality issues.

I'm hoping that a delay in SST-equipped models will create more negotiation room on the 5MT cars.

5th.... 0.761.. 1.008

just in cast anybody wants the finial final drive without a calculator

13.390 ... 14.846
9.139 ... 9.618
6.768 ... 7.124
5.136 ... 5.369
3.566 ... 4.094
---- ... 3.148

So they are about even in 4th gear so that means that while the 5spd probably doesn't launch as well it is a much closer ratio gear box so it maybe slightly better on the race track, all depending on the track. The SST does have a somewhat more useable 5th gear for highspeed track purposes and a better overdrive for highway mileage.

For auto-X the 6spd is probably better as you can get more grunt down in the lower gears, not to mention you may actually be able to smoothly drop into 1st with the DSG

that's my analysis, your's may vary
