View Full Version : Going for protune...
BlueDoom 12-12-2007, 04:11 PM and was wondering what kinda results people have gotten. I currently am running a custom DP with an SPT catback and SPT intake (Full 3in TBE). It's not alot but I figured if I was going spend the money to get to Stage 2 then I might as well go as far as I can with my current mods. I do not plan on adding much else......for now. Boost is very addiciting.
entire mod list: 06 WRX Wagon
17x7.5 Rota SDX w/Toyo Proxie 4's 225x45x17 (thank you subydude!)
Cobb AP v2 Stage2 91 oct.
Cobb Short Shifter and bushings
Custom catted DP
SPT catback
SPT intake
H&R springs on Stock Struts.
sti25impreza 12-14-2007, 01:25 PM search and you will find.
it vaires from car to car, depends on many things like altitude, temp, ect. on average i would say people see anythere from 5-30whp. its not always the power increase that you notice, but its the better overall driveability and better power curve after a protune.
BlueDoom 12-15-2007, 09:07 AM yeah i did do some searching but i was just looking for some updated info.
Thanks for the insight. I really want to make sure I'm getting the most out of the mods I have and too make sure everything is working correctly. Even if it is only a few horespower I guess its more for piece of mind.
thanks
Unabomber 12-16-2007, 12:38 PM Searching wont help as user A's result mean squat to you as the variables to power are:
mods
dyno
tuner skill
goals given to tuner
temperature
elevation
etc
etc
etc
It will be worth it though, so go for it.
BlueDoom 12-16-2007, 01:19 PM Great!! thanks..
I will post back my results...
FCmaniac 12-18-2007, 03:47 PM you'll love it
BlueDoom 12-18-2007, 09:14 PM My stage 2 is running good, I'm not sure I'm hitting target boost though. I REALLY need a boost gauge...
The protune cannot come fast enough....
FCmaniac 12-19-2007, 06:55 AM boost gauge is such a simple install... you could probably even just grab a used one on ebay for 20-30 bucks
Then buy this for the install. You could do it blindfolded its so easy.

BlueDoom 12-19-2007, 11:11 AM Good lookin out... thank you. Now this may be a dumb question but does a mechanical boost gauge require any power connections for lighting? Or is their no lighting for this kind of gauge?
Thanks
Parker @ COBB 12-19-2007, 01:09 PM You will not need a boost gauge to see if you are hitting target boost.
The Accessport can read your boost if you find teh REl. pressure option in live data.
BlueDoom 12-19-2007, 01:36 PM Yeah, I use the AP now...(see below) :)
http://bluedoom.zoints.com/image/74796-Inside
but I would rather have a regular boost gauge. I hate having to keep disconecting the AP from the car so I don't drain the bat. I love the unit though.
thanks

Yes and you can easily tap into the clock wiring harness illumination.
Punctual 12-19-2007, 03:10 PM Quick question as far as the accessport goes.
Can you save a pro-tune to your accessport? And flash, and reflash your ECU whenever you'd like with the AP? Or can the accessport only store cobb premap'd tunes?
Sorry I tried searching, and I'm fairly new so I couldn't make a new post. :)

Yes and your tuner should copy the map to your AP for you. You can then switch back and forth just like any of the OTS maps.

Thanks, I appreciate that. I looked and looked for an answer and finally worked up the courage to pose my question. I was apprehensive at first because I hadn't read that was possible anywhere. I mean, logic suggests that it is, but how often do companies really use superb logic? I guess I'll definatley need to buy myself an AP, then parts, then protune. Appreciate it FCmaniac.

No problem bud. There is nothing like getting tuned. Its fun to watch your car on the dyno and discuss things with the tuner. It makes the mod bug just that more addictive though. :D
Punctual 12-19-2007, 08:49 PM I feel the mod bug kicking in. This is my first performance car. Before this I had a little Mazda BSeries pickup.
I started with bikes. I can mod a bike and such, but now I'm expanding that to my STi. I'm super green when it comes to cars.
(sorry thread hijack!)

I have a Cobb TBE, V2 Accessport, GM boost solenoid and K&N flat panel:
before protune: 213 awHP 233 awTq
After protune: 230 awHP 308 awTq
There was a huge improvement in low end punch (obviously) and overall driveability. Sounds a hell of a lot better too. Best $ spent yet. Frickin' expensive habit though.

REALLY!!! That is far more then I expected
Jan 5th can not come fast enough....
thanks for the info.
BlueDoom 01-07-2008, 12:24 PM The results...
Right before the tune I had a GM boost control solenoid installed. It was recommend by Hill since my car could not get beyond 15 PSI with the stock turbo. Its now tuned for 17 PSI.
Current Mods and info:
2006 WRX Wagon
16500 miles
SPT intake
SPT Catback
Custom catted DP
GM Boost solenoid
H&R springs
Rota SDX rims
Cobb Shifter and bushings
Cobb AP v2
Agile Protune.

gsrthomas 01-07-2008, 01:16 PM Where can you get protuned in SoCal?
BlueDoom 01-07-2008, 02:33 PM I'm in PA and would have no idea...I would try searching the forum
No impressions? Would love to hear the differences you've noticed after getting it done.
Which gears are noticeably faster, where you notice the power, etc.??
BlueDoom 01-07-2008, 06:04 PM Well the most noticable difference for me is the smoother sound from the engine. All the way through the gears it just sounds better. The turbo spools up much sooner and the power is really on in 2nd gear. The HP gains are not real noticable but the torque is more then I expected. 2nd gear is where I really feel the most difference, the tires want to break loose. 3rd pulls a bit longer and so does 4th. The exhaust is more subtle but refined ...I guess. I have an SPT exhaust so its not real loud. I am running 18 PSI up from 15 but I needed a boost solenoid to reach that. The small stock turbo is limiting. The tuner installed the solenoid right before the tune. I also have piece of mind that my other mods are running as they should.
I would highly recommend it.
hope this helps.
Flyingjibus 01-08-2008, 07:49 PM I just got 40whp from my stage 2 pro-tune!!! WOOT!
209 whp to 249 whp. Amazing difference. I would post my graph if I could.:(
BlueDoom 01-08-2008, 08:32 PM Sweet congrats!!!
Robzilla 01-08-2008, 09:24 PM That's alot of HP, who tuned you?
NickGuyy07 01-08-2008, 10:35 PM Nice man
Harry420 01-09-2008, 01:55 AM I have a question:
Is it reliable to get one of the internet protunes where you tell them your mods and they send you a map? Or would it be that much better to actually go to a tuner and getting the whole dyno treatment? It seems to be twice as much money to take it to a tuner.
Flyingjibus 01-09-2008, 04:55 PM That's alot of HP, who tuned you?
Performance Race Engineering in Portland, OR . Bobby is great!

Im getting my stage 2 tuned by him next weekend, what mods do you have other then TBE
Flyingjibus 01-14-2008, 01:18 PM Full Catless exhaust (including uppipe) DP is divorced wastegate. Other then that a K&N drop in filter and a well taken care of motor.
Clean your air filter. Clean you mass air flow sensor. Make sure your spark plugs are good. full tank of gas.

REXtard04 01-15-2008, 02:22 PM Where can I buy this GM boost solenoid? I am doing a pro-tune in springtime and want to get this in before hand.
BlueDoom 01-15-2008, 06:09 PM I think you can purchase it form http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/.
Here is a thread with some info.

My tuner installed it before he started the tune to get the boost up past 15 PSI. I am running 18 now. It makes a clicking noise but other then that it works nice.

unbolt it from the fender and zip tie it to the wiring harness or a hose to get rid of the clicking in the cabin
