Ok, so my wife who is already up in Anchorage spotted the free 86 Subaru on Craigslist. It's not starting without a jump. Ok, battery shot to hell. But the catch is...it has no title. How difficult is it to get one?

I figured as much. I just don't know what to do for my wife. She moved up there and a friend lent her a vehicle to drive. He told me it was a 4x4 GMC truck....turns out the 4x4 haasn't worked in over 10 years and my wife is absolutely petrified to drive this vehicle. I'm absolutely petrified to have her driving this vehicle. Especially since she is convinced it's the font end sliding around and not the back.

We have virtually nil money since we thought we would be ok to drive the truck around until I get up there to buy a car for us when the paychecks start rolling in. Now, I'm convinced she is going to crash this damn truck and hurt herself before I get there in six weeks.

Now I'm just ranting and raving and trying to protect my wife from 3,xxx miles away.

Peace out you.

p.s. anybody got a cheap 4x4, AWD or FWD vehicle I can buy for her? :(

buying an unsafe POS does not make it better. really, up here when it comes to subarus, you get what you pay for.

rent a little junker for a month. it'll be cheaper than buying a POS that's gonna break down. try Enterprise since they usually have good rates this time of year, especially for longer terms.

No can do. Buying her a $500 FWD junker is 100 times safer then her driving a RWD lightweight junker with an LSD that can't decide when to engage or when to disengage. She has nearly wrapped it around 2 tree now.

$678/month for a compact car at Hertz

You can probably find one cheaper at the local Rent-A-Wreck (which are late model cars, but decent).

i've never had success, myself or my family, buying "junkers." they usually end up being a real POS that costs more money to fix and keep running than what was originally paid.

I've had success with those $1,000 beaters before. Infact, my car at the moment I paid $350 for it 3 years ago, put in a new drive shaft for the front and I have a fully loaded 94 Nissan Pathfinder with leather, heated seats, sunroof, 4x4. I've probably put in a touch over $400 in repairs....ok, 575 as I just replaced the other drive shaft when I did some crawling arond some mountains down here.

I would love to rent her a car for the month but that would chew up pretty much our down payment for a car when I get up there which would mean we would need to rent the car for which we can't afford. AKLGT, trust me, I SERIOUSLY considered it but I just can't afford it.

well, like i said, good luck to you. don't just buy cheap, especially up here. have it looked at and inspected first if you're worried about safety. cheap $$ usually equals cheap car. and remember, you're not here to fix that beater if something should go wrong with it right now.

Yeah I know. Thats why I'm REALLY REALLY interested in a 04 Kia Rio that I found. Woman is asking $300 for it. She drove it in from Wasilla to Anch for a regular oil change @ dealership and now has been told she needs a new motor because it didn't have any oil in it and that it needs a new transmission.

She had the oil changed 3,000 miles ago and there is no leaks (from the CSAs mouth) but the oil was just on the bottom of the dipstick....I see cars like everyday and then see them again every 3,000miles for a period of 75,000 mi before the owner trtades them in. and the transmission needs a bearing....not sure which one but the woman says the car has been driving fine and has not noticed anything different since she bought it brand new 49,xxx mi ago.

I'm pretty keen to get this car inspected....but honestly, if there is nothing wrong with the car I might have to tell the woman that and to keep it and spend a little bit of money elsewhere to repair to fix the minor things with it...I do have a conscience LOL

I have had heard horror stories about all makes and models since I started in the automotive industry and nothing really sticks out in any brand.

When i bought my first subaru I thought it was the biggest Ps I had ever driven. It was a 97 with the 2.2 and gutless as all get out. Then I drove a friends WRX and bought mine two weeks later. Then crashed it 2 months later but we don't talkj about that LOL

I would say the same if it was the summer but since its not and there is snow on the ground I disagree. Up here the rentals don't have snowtires. They have the crappy cheapo allseason or worse summer tires on. Makes no sense to me why they don't put winters on them to protect their vehicles but that's why you get the $5 insurance right?
