I have a 96 Impreza w/ the 2.2L engine. The locks seems to be automatic, and they lock/unlock the whole car when the driver's door is locked/unlocked. Is it possible to reasonably add an aftermarket keyless system?

I took the door apart to take a look, and see if i could find the switch. It's not plugged directly into the lock, but looks like it is near the actual latch mechanism. There are two wires coming out of that area, and they are at a relative 0 volts when the doors are unlocked, and a relative +12V when the doors are locked. If I short them w/ the doors locked it unlocks the other doors. Remove the connection, and they go back to locked. Unfortunately this doesn't do anything to the driver's door, I think it's just a signal.

So really, I need to get in there, but there isn't much space. Any suggestions from experienced individuals?

thanks

are you asking if you can add a keyless system to your subaru that doesnt have one?

the answer is yes... you can get a factory keyless entry unit brain and program the keyfob..

The one from the 98-99 Forester is silly cheap and works fine- I put one in my 96 OBS. If you go aftermarket, you need an actuator for the driver's door lock, as there isn't one.
