Do you guys foresee any problems using the Ej257 shortblock from an '05 STi to replace the cracked shortblock from my '04? I'm considering purchasing an '05 shortblock as its available now. This includes the crank as I broke that thing too.
Is it me or is it more and more common for connecting rods and rod bearings to go on these engines at or around the 50k mile marker?

All STI blocks are the same.....well, minus the different block casting that just recently came out..but there are no internal differences.
How do you break a crank?!?!? Sounds like a warranty problem.

It's not broken just damaged, I had a connecting rod crack through my block and It put a couple of knicks on my crank.. I'd figure I'd replace the crank too while I'm at it..

Not trying to thread jack, but this is the second time I have heard a crank being damaged. How does this happen? The first one was "bent". A local shop showed me what happens when subies get modified. I think he was blowing smoke up my rear tho.

Sounds like he broke a rod which messed up the crank also.

Takes a good bit to break one of those. could have been like that wrx dude in this forum that had the unfortunate break....was just a freak failure.

Probably just a fatigue issue of some sort. I would be interested to see where the rod broke up close to see the break pattern. I just can't see a rod breaking before a bearing went out.

in my case it was a rod breaking, it just went thru the block right underneath the alternator.. the heads are fine.. fortunately.
