Hi all,

I have a 2004 wrx with just over 110,000km on it. All I've done for mods is a 3" turbo back & AccessPort. Well I spun the rod bearing the other day (no clue why.. I was just driving down the highway... but i have never been all that gentle on her *blush*)

Well I have the car down into a shop now & I've decided to do the 2.5 litre block build up on it, get the bottom end built up while the engine is out.

I know I can leave the stock turbo for the time being but I was wondering if I could get away without doing the injectors/fuel pump right now. I didn't really have a budget saved up for this build up so trying to spread out the costs over a bit of a longer time frame.

What're your thoughts all?

If you on a budget like you said i would find the cause of failuer first. It make prevent you to do it twice sinse you might reuse some of the parts from your old block.

And what do you mean by buid up?
Good Luck with your build.;)

Hi st.race,

As I understand spun rod bearings are normally caused by lack of oil. Beyond that I'm going to have to wait for the shop to crack things apart & give me the skinny. I can't really see how anything that i'll be re-using (tope end) would have contributed to oil starvation.

Basically I'm looking @ getting a 2.5 block built with pistons, rods & crank (still doing the figuring with the shop on all the details about the build). Will re-use my AP for the engine management. Then down the road do the turbo, tranns/clutch & maybe top end. If I could leave the fuel pump/injectors it would just give some breathing room as Christmas just passed & we're off for vacation out west in a couple weeks (working for yourself with no paid vacation sucks sometimes! haha)

what's you overall power you want for the car.

Because the stock rods are plenty fine for most people. it could be a waste of 700 for you to do that. I'd buy a brand new 2.5l block and put forged pistons in it.....or, just buy an S2 block that's already done from a builder

I just hope your oil pump, pcv and oil passages are all fine. Check for scorring on heads from rod bearing material.

According to many folks on here, spun bearings are also often caused by detonation, but that normally happens with a bigger turbo and a "less than perfect" tune. With just a turboback and AP stage 2, I wouldn't think that is the issue. Are you using a Cobb off the shelf map?

If you had a serious lack of oil, you should also check your top end, the cams seem to be damaged quickly in these cases, look for grooves in the cam journals.

Regarding running a 2.5L hybrid on 440cc stock injectors, IMO that would be dicey if you plan to use full power at higher rpms. Deatschwerks injectors are fairly inexpensive...

Good luck.

thanks edo2000.

It's the HKS turbo back (sorry, memory fails exactly which one) and the off the shelf 91 octane stage 2 Cobb AP map.

Now that I've had some time to think about it all I agree... the little bit that the injectors/pump will add to the cost of the build are really not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things.

I'll have the shop check the heads & everything over, I agree with you 100%. I really don't want to have to pull the motor again in a month.... not sure my visa could handle that. hahahah!

When I did my hybrid build, I did what are planning. I built everything up and left the stock turbo on mainly because it was an unplanned expense. I installed a high capacity fuel pump and 800 cc modded stock injectors. As long as the car is tuned properly, you should have no issues.
