They were probably tight, problem is they have them hooked up wrong from the looks of it. Can't tell very well, but the straps are supposed to be hooked up to unsprung weight and cross over. Works much better at keeping the car from moving around. Hooked up wrong I've seen a 2.5RS move around that much on the dyno doing a similar run.

You can do 1/4 mile runs on the dyno as long as you got it hooked up right...

Thanks for the "holy ****s" and the :eek::eek:'s! :D

We do cross the front straps to keep the front centered but crossing the rears just adds strap length and allows the car to move forward too much. Those straps started off tight enough to stand on without them touching the ground. This was the first time I ran my car since it used to make only 330whp. This was a big change..... I think I will use 2 straight straps like I did and also add 2 more diagonal next time. I am also told that if a straight strap breaks the car will stay mostly straight but if a diagonal strap breakes, it will spit you sideways. I'll let Dan decide since he's the expert.

BTW, they were attached to the solid mounted tow points, not the suspension.

Anyone wanna guess what the ET was for that practice race?

OK,

it was an 11.5 at 125 by the boss himself, Dan Harman (on street tires) who is not a good drag-racer by his own admission (altho I thought he looked good)

I bet a skilled drag guy could crack into the high 10's, esp with better tires and a drag race tune with better gas (100 unleaded here)

No, I have never drag raced it (only roadrace/time attack)but I may get a wild hair someday...............

I might be wrong but aren't the tow points sprung weight? I mean if you pull down on them don't they pull the car down?

Car probably makes sick power, but needs strapped tighter (or replace the rachets/strap). A stock STi could "dance" around similarly if the straps couldn't hold the required tension.

Scary pull fo sho.

No doubt about it - that fine line of tire commitment to lateral vs straight acceleration is going to be a little more interesting now. :)

A quick question for all of us who dream of tracking these cars: do you ever use a specific DCCD setting, or just run it in auto mode? I know what works well for me, but I'm curious what works best out on the track.

mxpop
02-01-2008, 04:19 PM
A quick question for all of us who dream of tracking these cars: do you ever use a specific DCCD setting, or just run it in auto mode?

I have played with different DCCD settings and some do return better characteristics under certain situations. However, I find that the extra distraction and risk of clicking on the wrong setting is not worth the small poss gains, esp if you click on the wrong setting just as you need to get both hands on the wheel entering a nasty turn etc. Besides, the auto setting is already pretty good all around for road race/Time attack. It may be worthwhile to find a way to simply and clearly toggle between 2 settings with a steering or shifter mounted switch etc. I just dont like reaching well out of view (HANS device makes it harder) to find a switch, much less a roller switch. I have not given up on trying to find some benefits with the DCCD, I just havent found the solution yet.

Sorry for the lack of setup info. I am still doing some final developements and testing. I will reveal everything when it's time and when we have the bugs sorted out. Hopefully this will be early March with two test days coming up next week. I know you all wont be bored with my car......

:D

flycaster
02-01-2008, 04:57 PM
I'd forgotten about the HANS device...toggling by braille might not be the brightest idea at the limit. And I'd also forgotten you run the '06, which has a much better front diff. In the '04, if you leave it on "auto" in high speed situations, the corner exit understeer is unfrigginbelievable; at lower speeds, "auto" seems to work fine...except for packed snow.

Update us after a few laps.

did you get the billet crank?

I thought you were running the 2.5l? How's the 2.6 (now?)

^^

Yeah, you busted me.

We had a cam lobe flatten and a lifter (bucket) start to go bad during the filming of the Speed Channel show. Not a big deal but we had to remove the motor. We guess either a bad hardening or too low of rpms for the initial run in. Cosy suggests a min of 2000rpm for the first 20 mins and we may not have done that correctly. Oh well.

While it was out, Cosy offered to fix it for free and upgrade us to the just released stroker with the billit crank (I had the balanced OEM crank in the 1st one). This new one will touch 10k and can live at 9k all day.

BTW, this new setup makes the power with unleaded and a cat installed.
