View Full Version : Interesting odometer...
Zahnster 02-04-2002, 06:30 PM Help me out here because I'm quite confused. I may even have a chance to test this again soon.
There is a drive I do every once and a while for work. It's about 30 miles. It took me exactly 30 minutes there and almost the same time back. Considering I was driving around 75mph or higher almost the entire time for 30 minutes, how could I only cover 30 miles?
brushphyre 02-04-2002, 06:36 PM to find the answer to your difficult question you must look deep inside your heart, grasshopper
KnightWRXRider 02-04-2002, 06:42 PM Confuscious say maybe red, yellow, and green light thing is the answer...
Zahnster 02-04-2002, 06:44 PM That's onramp to offramp time. The slowest I got was 40mph and that was for a few seconds with a few minutes of roughly 60mph.
LordBass 02-04-2002, 06:50 PM If train A leaves station 1 at 5:45 heading south a 45mph and train B leaves the station 2 at 5:55 heading north at 60mph, then...
... my brain explodes. :)

Julian 02-04-2002, 06:56 PM It doesn't take much to drop an average time, obviously. While you may have been doing 75, you also had a spot of 40mph (25mph less than your intended average), as well as spots of 60mph. Top speed record runs (where they run a car around an oval at WOT for 24 hours) are murdered by fuel stops. C&D did a run in a Ferrari 550. I don't remember the figures, but the top speed of that car is like 186mph or so, which they ran for 24 hours, but with the fuel stops it dropped the average considerably.
larryg 02-04-2002, 06:57 PM Set your cruise control at 60mph and time how long it takes you to cover one mile...hint: it should take exactly 60 seconds :D

Austin 02-05-2002, 12:26 AM Better to set your cruise control at 60 and time yourself over 5 miles - the milemarker signs aren't guaranteed to be exactly one mile apart... sometimes the guys putting those markers in get lazy.

Mexican1: It's 3 o'clock, where the hell is Louie?
Mexican2: Well you tell me. Louie left his house at 2:15 and has to travel a distance of 6.2 miles at a rate of 5 mph. What time will Louie arrive?
Mexican1: Depends if he stops to see his hoe.
Mexican2: Thats what we call a veriable.
:D

You are also assuming your speedo is accurate...most read a few mph high.

Zahnster 02-05-2002, 12:27 PM Perhaps that explains why I've not gotten a ticket in 9 months of owning the car.

bemani 02-05-2002, 04:19 PM Now you know your speedometer is wrong, you can safely drive up to 90mph !

math make head go boom
nqwan 02-06-2002, 08:27 AM are you running stock tires?
but seriously, if your odometer is registering less miles than you are actually putting on the car, uhh...isnt that all the much better when you eventually sell the car? :D
Zahnster 02-06-2002, 02:58 PM RE92.
And the thought that registering less miles than actual is an interesting idea. Perhaps my MPG is higher than I thought.
Isn't there some people out there getting incredible mileage and some people getting really poor mileage with similar driving styles? Perhaps this is a widespread thing. I'll look into the 5 mile test. A GPS would do the trick nicely as well.

during my break in period i consistently got 22mpg except for one spirited driven tank in which i got 19mph (under 4k rpm of course :p ). i have yet to notice an increase in mpg so far but if its true that mileage increases once the car breaks in, kick ass :D oh and thats city driving with a little highway thrown in the mix sometimes
I am b 02-06-2002, 05:49 PM WOW!!! Maybe that is why i'm getting 84 mpg!!! Dude your on to something. Or........ on something. Good Bye. :D

that's ASSuming that your speedo is accurate.
using my gps, my speedo is around 1.25 mph faster...

bluewho 02-08-2002, 02:53 AM If a town is 60 miles away and you average 30mph on the way there. How fast do you have to go to average 60mph for the whole trip.
That's why!!!
YeeHa 02-08-2002, 12:57 PM Ow head hurts. You must drive faster. :D
scaryfastskier 02-09-2002, 03:10 AM Maybe it was just really windy and all the negative atmosphere resistance tweaked the Atomic Atmospheric Optimizer (AAO) sensor and sent the car into "trick the driver" mode...have you checked for a CEL? I think they are kept under the passenger's seat....

GreatWurm 02-09-2002, 11:19 PM I've actually heard of this occuring on several new WRX's. Usually has to do with what type of odometer fluid you're running...
Get a tachymeter. Found on your slightly better watches, it is simply a scale reading backwards around the second hand. It is a car fanatic staple.
When you pass the perfectly measured mile markers courtesy of your state patrol, you start it. It counts backwards from 300 to 60 to tell you your exact speed. works perfect with cruise !
