a little while ago the backlights illuminating my gauges stopped working on my wrx. the light in the needles still work fine, but i can't see my gauges at night at all. so i checked out the fuses and took out the entire gauge configuration to look if the lights were burned out, but all seemed to be ok. then just last week i turned my car off but left the key in the on position and somehow my gauges lit up for only a couple seconds... thats happened twice now. completely randomly. i do have a turbo timer and boost controller which was installed by the previous owner.

anyone have any idea whats wrong?
