I just picked up a beautifully put together '03 WRX with a 2.0 and what I thought was a stock 5 speed. After getting it tuned, a friend of mine who owned a stock 02 with 5 speed, told me that I was shifting at slower speeds than he was comparing redline shift points. So I did some research, and used some speed/gear ratio calculators to see what was going on. Just comparing findings to what I run, the shifts are much sooner, so I am assuming that there is some gear work done.

What I am asking is this. What are you shifting at in your stock 5-speed? Do you recognize this shift pattern? I know there are a few variables to take into consideration, but what I can tell you is that I am runnin 215/50-17s.

Stock gear ratio:
3.454 (1st)
1.947 (2nd)
1.366 (3rd)
0.972 (4th)
0.738 (5th)
3.9:1 Final Drive (<---- this took me a little while to find, can anyone confirm, i believe its correct)

Speed I am reading at redline shifts
1-2 = 40mph
2-3 = 60mph
3-4 = 80mph (little under actually, like 78, 79ish)

Here are the figures from the speed calculator. Now i know that it isn't going to be 100% correct, but it should be close. When I did transmission work on my previous car, I used the speed calculators and compared after modifying the final drive in that transmission, and they were accurate to 2-3mph all across the board. This shows i should be close to 100mph when going from 3 to 4, and its way lower.

Any help would be great, thanks!!

Judging by your shift points it looks like you might have RA's.

Here this might help...

oh WOW, that is incredibly helpful, thank you!! I was looking for something like that all day yesterday and today, and couldn't find anything that well put together. Ill play around with that info for a bit.

ok, going through all the different options there, assuming my speedometer is accurate, the best match for my shift speeds is the KAAZ gears.

I have to ask this because I haven't gotten a straight forward answer, but can we confirm that the gears I am running in the 5MT are not stock?

can anyone else just confirm this for me?

Are you suggesting that you have KAAZ in your box or want to buy a KAAZ set? Well if this is what you think then one way to tell is the straight cut 1-3 gears.
They would SCREAM super loud and your shifts would be stupid quick and your ratios would be super short as its designed for rally events. I think that a KAAZ fifth is around an OEM fourth gear in its ratio.

It sounds like an RA box......more aggressive in ratios but not KAAZ crazy-short.

Whats your RPMs cruising in Fifth going say 60 MPH?

im sorry, what i meant to say is that while going through all the gear ratios in the link given in the second post, plugging them all into the gear ratio/speed calculators, and adjusting for tire size, the shift points given by the calculator for the KAAZ gears best matched the shift points that I actually encounter while driving on the street.

i am just under 4k cruising the freeway at 80mph in 5th. Is that KAAZ short or more like RA?

Those are RAs

could you please help me out and tell my why you think they are the RAs? I don't mean to be rude, and I hope i don't come off that way, but i am just wondering why. Do you have the RA gears and are those your shift points? I am really REALLY looking for that kind of feedback from people, but i think the long post scared most away.

Looks like he was, haha. I didn't even check back at this thread until today, he sent me a PM. Good to talk to the person who previously owned my new baby.
