View Full Version : finally installed sti hid's into my wrx... alpnwhite96 02-04-2008, 06:42 PM now just gotta wait for it to get dark. it was plug and play, really simple install. Felix13 02-04-2008, 06:46 PM how much? nhat 02-04-2008, 07:05 PM set your chaper/region info! bmak21 02-04-2008, 08:58 PM i would also like to know how much cause i want to do this skimobile 02-04-2008, 09:24 PM Caesar at www.lightwerkz.net does nice work if you're looking for plug and play HID options. alpnwhite96 02-04-2008, 10:25 PM i think i paid $600 for these used sti headlights about a year ago probably... i had to buy 1 bulb and 1 ballst... i ended up getting a pair of bulbs for $60 and a pair of ballasts (can't remember how much they cost) install didn't take long at all, looks great! alpnwhite96 02-04-2008, 10:30 PM need to aim the lights though ImportJunky 02-04-2008, 10:57 PM non sense. just blind everyone!! haha pics? alpnwhite96 02-05-2008, 12:09 AM ill take some pics of them tomorrow... previous owner of the headlights had blacked them out. i think i aimed them properly... i feel like i'm blinding everyone though because i can see everything now... ill have to have my gf drive the car by me while im driving hers so i can see for myself. rkramer 02-05-2008, 12:25 AM i think i aimed them properly... i feel like i'm blinding everyone though because i can see everything now... ill have to have my gf drive the car by me while im driving hers so i can see for myself. you are blinding everyone. it is IMPOSSIBLE to aim hid lights correctly in an assembly made for standard filiment bulbs. either they are going to be pointed at the ground and you will get less light then before, or you are going to have continual high beams to everyone else on the road. alpnwhite96 02-05-2008, 12:32 AM you are blinding everyone. it is IMPOSSIBLE to aim hid lights correctly in an assembly made for standard filiment bulbs. either they are going to be pointed at the ground and you will get less light then before, or you are going to have continual high beams to everyone else on the road. what? i installed 06 sti headlamps into an 06 wrx. not an HID retrofit kit into my 06 headlights. jdubya301 02-05-2008, 02:51 AM ^ prolly just didnt read it right.:D slo07wrx 02-05-2008, 09:19 AM so let me get this straight, if i go buy o6/07 STI stock headlights with ballasts they will plug right into my 07 TR wire harness? thanks chris jdmimprez 02-05-2008, 11:02 AM ....... wouldn't it be a lot easier to just buy a kit & install it? Bought an 8000k kit for my 06 & the hardest part was finding a place to put the ballast. install took like 30 min. tludwins539 02-05-2008, 11:17 AM You should be fine with aftermarket hids in 06 and 07 because of the projectors. People with previous years would have to get retrofits or stock hid headlights. I know that I get a great beam with my aftermarket hids in my 07. IllNastyImpreza 02-05-2008, 01:42 PM another reason for HID foglights instead :) alpnwhite96 02-05-2008, 04:23 PM so let me get this straight, if i go buy o6/07 STI stock headlights with ballasts they will plug right into my 07 TR wire harness? thanks chris assuming 06/07 are the same, then yes. alpnwhite96 02-05-2008, 04:24 PM ....... wouldn't it be a lot easier to just buy a kit & install it? Bought an 8000k kit for my 06 & the hardest part was finding a place to put the ballast. install took like 30 min. i didn't want to go with a retrofit kit. wrx wolf 02-05-2008, 04:38 PM I'm sure there's already one out there, but why don't you do a quick write-up since you have a late model? I'm interested in how you did this too... alpnwhite96 02-05-2008, 05:06 PM I'm sure there's already one out there, but why don't you do a quick write-up since you have a late model? I'm interested in how you did this too... too late now  but i used this writeup: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=957478 and it took me about 20-30 minutes per side. jdubya301 02-05-2008, 05:13 PM ....... wouldn't it be a lot easier to just buy a kit & install it? HID kits suck.. theres a million threads out there explaining why. sure they are easy to install, but the light output is horrendous, and well, illegal. look at some of the stickies that the mods put together. there is some valuable reading material there! alpnwhite96 02-05-2008, 05:27 PM HID kits suck.. theres a million threads out there explaining why. sure they are easy to install, but the light output is horrendous, and well, illegal. look at some of the stickies that the mods put together. there is some valuable reading material there! +1 for not going retrofit route i wanted to have my stock headlights 100% intact for if/when i ever decide to get rid of the car. dLo R6 02-06-2008, 12:01 AM you should really run the ballasts off the battery power and switch it on with a relay, and make sure the ballasts are grounded to the battery and not to the oem headlight harness. reason is the amount of current drawn by the ballasts on ignition is a lot higher than with halogens, and the stock wiring for halogens is not setup to handle that much current. i have heard of people getting melted harnesses from the heat. nhat 02-06-2008, 01:46 AM +1 for not going retrofit route i wanted to have my stock headlights 100% intact for if/when i ever decide to get rid of the car. retrofits from www.lightwerkz.net are 100% legit and done correctly. those are the only retrofits i would do. HID kits, on the other hand, are awful and illegal. if i didn't already have HIDs, i'd just swap in a set of HIDs from an sti just as you did. Handsdown 02-06-2008, 03:16 AM i saw the RX330's startup sequence today. dear god. those things are sick. i want to get their leveling assemblys and everything all in my lights. it would be so sick. alpnwhite96 02-06-2008, 02:22 PM maybe one day i'll be motivated enough to do the leveling motors... jezzy 02-07-2008, 06:58 PM ^^ I love having the leveling enabled. Mind you, it's rare I use them but on long dark drives , it comes in handy, without having to use the highbeams. 06 STI headlights w/TSX retrofit and leveling motors working =) dLo R6 02-07-2008, 08:26 PM what jezzy said. the levelling was definitely the nice icing on the cake. wasn't too hard to do either. steverx05 02-07-2008, 11:01 PM Oh god...people are getting "retrofits" and "plug-n-play kits" confused? This isn't good. 1sick07 02-08-2008, 02:29 AM Oh god...people are getting "retrofits" and "plug-n-play kits" confused? This isn't good. +1 dun dun duuuuuuun. :furious: WRBlueGDB-F 02-08-2008, 07:10 AM alpnwhite96 did you need to do any wiring modification for the Sti hid to work? That link you posted is on how to clear/black out the headlights. I need some info on how to wire the hids correctly. All I can find is people saying to ground the hids directly, and power off a relay, but no wiring diagrams. A source for any info on the wiring for the leveling switch would be great too. Any help anyone? Thanks in advance. :) Paranoid Fabrications 02-08-2008, 01:17 PM yea, get the levelers installed, love mine. use them all the time. (carry heavy things in the back of the wagon) STI headlights with TSX retrofits and levelers :D FTW :D :D nate.the.great 02-08-2008, 06:42 PM retrofits from www.lightwerkz.net (http://www.lightwerkz.net) are 100% legit and done correctly. those are the only retrofits i would do. HID kits, on the other hand, are awful and illegal. if i didn't already have HIDs, i'd just swap in a set of HIDs from an sti just as you did. do some research before making those sort of claims. retrofits are no more legal than an HID kit. verdee 02-09-2008, 01:54 AM love having leveling. Aim it up for the dark roads, down for snow, its fantastic. Thanks to wagons_ho! for helping me get the harness built. (and anyone else using his 06 harness should thank me for helping him source the switch plug);) WRBlueGDB-F 03-18-2008, 08:52 AM Hey verdee, i bought a leveling switch harness from wagons_ho! so thanks for the help. Can you tell me how to wire it? I mean what fuse to use, and where to pick up the illumination? I've asked wagons_ho! but haven't heard from him in a few days. I'm figuring because of his line of work he's busy elsewhere. Thanks for any info. bcheck555 03-19-2008, 08:48 PM retrofits from www.lightwerkz.net (http://www.lightwerkz.net) are 100% legit and done correctly. those are the only retrofits i would do. Can you tell me how to wire it? I mean what fuse to use, and where to pick up the illumination? I've asked wagons_ho! but haven't heard from him in a few days. I'm figuring because of his line of work he's busy elsewhere. Thanks for any info. I am trying to remember how I did it. I had the first 06 harness he did, and I think he may have changed it after I noticed the illumination didn't immediately work. My switch was also a piece straight out of 06 sti so I had factory wire colors to go off of. However, I tapped the wiring from the switch next to it, either the fog light or defroster. I checked the wiring diagram and it illumination is a orange-white wire, which should be coming from pin 8 on the leveling switch. IllNastyImpreza 03-19-2008, 10:36 PM no pics eh? |
