I am trying to install my Odyssey 680MJT using the stock battery tray but since the new battery is so small it doesn't sit across the entire bottom of the tray. This causes the tray to be very flimsy thus making the J hooks useless since they cannot grab. When I try to screw in the bolts to the J hook, it just pulls up on the tray and bends it.
What will I need to install this correctly?

lay it on its side
I was thinking about that but I don't think I could use the stock hardware to do secure it. Do you know where I can find a pic of this battery mounted on its side?

Or you could just get a set of short j-hooks from AutoZone for $2.95 and reuse the factory tie-down. It's just the right length when the battery is on its side and oriented with the terminals facing rearward. I even reused the factory plastic tray to provide a little extra heat protection for the battery.

Sounds good. I'll give that a try. I currently use steel spacers and have the battery standing up. I'm not sure how sturdy that is. It seems pretty secure but who knows if it will eventually wiggle loose.

I did have to cut a small notch in the back of the battery tray to make clearance for the positive terminal, but it wasn't anything a sturdy pair of scissors couldn't handle.
