the quick info:
'96 Impreza Brighton
old motor 2.2L Legacy turbo
new motor 2.5L STi
car is stripped and caged (http://www.rs25.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15007)

The main issues I have ran into (so far) have been the heater box and power steering lines. The main harness mounts differently and is larger than the original wiring. The box will have to be modified to fit under the harness and air ducts rearranged. Being this car is not an everyday car and doesn't have a stock dash this won't be too hard, but not all that easy either.

The power steering pump has a different routing and ends on the lines. Finding lines from a source other than the dealer ($200+) has not been easy. Most junk yards just cut those when pulling motors. If they don't cut them you would have to go pick the lines up in person, which is hard where I'm at.

The wiring has been easier than I thought with the help of a friend that has AllData sending me info (thanks John). It just takes time to sort out plugs and match up wires. If it was warmer here I would be done by now. I did find out today that I can run the car w/o the fuel pump controller unit, but it may need to be reflased to clear the codes. I might be looking for the controller.

The motor went in easy and I just have a few fitment things to massage out with the FMIC piping.

I'll post more as I get further along.

Alan - I have a link to a post with all the pieces you need to make power steering lines out of AN for like $75. Will look for it at home unless someone provides it here first.

Thanks Nick.
(could use some help getting the old motor apart so you can look at the block)

The car will still be used for autoX. But mainly it has been destined for track use.
I did a few track days with the untuned 2.2L motor and it was fairly quick. It should be a lot quicker with the new motor.

Can you wait until it's not 5°F at a high during the day?

I'll have to search again for those power steering line instructions... I can't find the post I printed out to save my life, and I can't managed to find it in searches. :(

i went to the hydraulic supply shop and bought the pieces then used a special press at work
the shop would have done the crimping for me but i wanted to get the length correct.. as i recall it was about $10 a fitting

alan is this the same beat green shell from a million years ago?

I'm putting together a list of wires that I had to splice, will have plug number, color and wire number in the plugs. It will be by system, stop lights, signals, etc.
Of course it will be for a '96 Impreza to '04 STi, but it might be able to help someone. I'll try type it out this weekend in between working on the car.

OK, quick update.
I have the power steering resevior and some hoses coming. The high pressure line has been put together and is installed.
I also have a cluster harness on the way too, so Donnie will be able to start building a dash.

parts I'm waiting for:
the cluster harness....still has not arrived
small tab for the VSS, on it's way
just purchased a fuel controller, maybe have it by friday??

work to do:
bleed the clutch (tonight I hope)

cut adapter plates from ABS plastic for blower to heater box ducting & assemble
-I took the box that contained the AC condensor out, doesn't fit too well with the new harness.

also for the heater controls need to be wired up, waiting for the harness

make the new dash, this will be Donnie's task

wire in the headlights, Donnie also, he said he had an idea how to do it

check all the lights, I know the brake lights work, but that's it

A bunch left to do, but so close. I might be looking for help this weekend to get it wrapped up :)

I have it registered, on the road and almost all back together. Thanks to Jeremy we got the tranny fixed on sunday. He also wired in the headlights.
I have been cleaning up stuff in the car, loose wires and screws.

I drove it up the road to the gas station today....I forgot how stiff it was.

damn I've missed this car

will try to get some pics

I broke Frank......something in the clutch went on the way to the first race in 2+ years.
I even drove around over 50 miles to see if any issues came up before this morning. :unamused:

8Complex
04-06-2008, 01:57 PM
Doh... that sucks. Were you using the same clutch as you have been with the 2.2? Think the extra torque took it out?

Scoobyslack1
04-07-2008, 01:15 AM
Same exedy clutch, looked fine last week when it went back in. I don't think I even floored the car. I was driving mellow this morning when it went. :unamused:

OK....lots done this past weekend.
Frank is mobile again and now has a 6MT. I need to adjust and break in the new clutch, but he is moving under his own power.
Will try to get some pics soon.

hey man, it's noah b. just wanted to say hi and subscribe to your build thread. i'm glad to see your car got a good upgrade and is up and running again.

i've stripped down my wagon and started putting most of an 05 STi in to it. to try and make it reliable enough to race at the track often. i hope to have it running this next week but that is feeling a bit to optimistic right now. well i better get back to it so i have a chance of racing this coming weekend :)

Going ok, still need to get the blower motor hooked up.
There are other small things to do and then tune it a little.
