I want to take my map off the AP load it onto my lap top and download it into my ECU using opensource is it possible to do? It's just for now until my Hydra gets back from Hydra America so I can drive my car.

Thanks,
Billy

lol well I sold my AP since I no longer need it So I was just wondering if it's possible to do. Unless theres some kind of lock out Cobb has it seems like it would work.

In my opinion, your request is a very reasonable one.

Openecu.org has threads about this on thier message board.

As I remember, it is a fine line between legal and not, but the boards have details on how to make it happen.

Cobb Map Thread (http://forums.openecu.org/viewtopic.php?t=812&highlight=ap+map)

Legality Discussions (http://forums.openecu.org/viewtopic.php?t=3)

Just remember, the open ecu guys are not trying to steal Cobb/etc Intellectual Property (I.P.), but with those companies keeping their data to themselves, it is tough for people to know what is theirs and what belongs to Subaru/FHI without reverse engineering. This is a big part of the above discussions: what I.P. belongs to FHI, what can Cobb/etc legitimately claim as their own, and where does OpenEcu fit into this?

I know that doing this with an OTS map is a no-no, but I do not know how it would apply to protuner maps. To me, it seems that I should be able to do what I want with a map I have paid for, as long as I do not distribute it. Some tuners may have objections, but I am not sure what legal grounds they have to stand on. Providing I do not modify the map, cause damage, and then try to hold the tuner responsible. A possible issue is the licensing agreement the tuner has with Cobb, but I am not sure where that would apply, as I have not read it.

To me, this issue needs to be discussed in detail, instead of being seen as taboo. We, the end user and consumer, need to know our rights and what we can do with the items we pay for. I would really like to see further discussion on the topic.
