View Full Version : is the stromung axleback a direct fit for 2.5i? jordan s 03-06-2008, 11:10 PM or do you need to buy the midpipe too? i just got the axleback in the mail and the flanges don't match up, the holes are off. i just wanna make sure they didn't mess up and make it wrong or something. piker28 03-07-2008, 12:05 AM prob gave you the ones for the 98-05 years, 06and newer the flange was rotated jordan s 03-07-2008, 12:13 AM prob gave you the ones for the 98-05 years, 06and newer the flange was rotated its not even that it needs to be rotated. the holes don't match up. the holes on the axleback are closer together than the holes on the midpipe. piker28 03-07-2008, 12:22 AM call up who you bought it from and see, they are design for stock midpipes so maybe you got one with a manufacturing defect worth a shot at least jordan s 03-07-2008, 12:36 AM call up who you bought it from and see, they are design for stock midpipes so maybe you got one with a manufacturing defect worth a shot at least i got it directly from stromung. i'm going to call them tomorrow. SilverSubie2.5 03-07-2008, 12:48 AM You bought something for pre 06. Nothing Stromung can do about that. jordan s 03-07-2008, 01:01 AM You bought something for pre 06. Nothing Stromung can do about that. probably. i didnt order it, someone else ordered it and had it shipped to my house (kind of a long story). i'll probably just go to meineke tomorrow and have them weld a new flange on my midpipe that fits. piker28 03-07-2008, 01:07 AM Ha if you pay for a crappy muffler shop to chop up a exhaust piece like that you are nuts... depending how bad it is get a drill out and start makin the hole bigger Or as i said call where you got it from explain the situation, its not like you used it im sure they would u nderstand and do a trade jordan s 03-07-2008, 01:12 AM Ha if you pay for a crappy muffler shop to chop up a exhaust piece like that you are nuts... depending how bad it is get a drill out and start makin the hole bigger Or as i said call where you got it from explain the situation, its not like you used it im sure they would u nderstand and do a trade im gonna have them chop and weld my stock midpipe, not my stromung. and i dont wanna deal with paying $30 to ship the thing back to stromung and hafta wait for the new one to come. piker28 03-07-2008, 01:15 AM lets put it this way if i had a 200dollar junker beater i wouldnt let meineke work on it, theres a reason these people work there ha their work blows and all it wil do is just weaken that piece of exhaust you have with their shoddy welds you can do as you wish its your stuff im just saying, if the wrong one was sent just deal with them, or sell it and buy new from boxer4racing jordan s 03-07-2008, 01:42 AM lets put it this way if i had a 200dollar junker beater i wouldnt let meineke work on it, theres a reason these people work there ha their work blows and all it wil do is just weaken that piece of exhaust you have with their shoddy welds you can do as you wish its your stuff im just saying, if the wrong one was sent just deal with them, or sell it and buy new from boxer4racing i had a muffler welded on at meineke before and the welds were fine. i usually go to another place but its more expensive and for something as simple as this i'd rather go to the cheaper place. subiesurfer 03-07-2008, 08:45 AM wait the axleback should fit no matter what year i thought, from stromung?? maybe u having a wagon could effect it...? idk SilverSubie2.5 03-07-2008, 02:45 PM wait the axleback should fit no matter what year i thought, from stromung?? maybe u having a wagon could effect it...? idk No, things changed in 06 (I'm not 100% on what changed since I don't have one). This is the reason you must do a full pre 06 headerback in order to run the Borla's, or any header for that matter, on the 06-07. Syph3r_ 03-07-2008, 08:16 PM ^ TMK they changed the everything on the exhaust to make it completely different from previous years RS's. They did happened to change the axleback portion of the exhaust to be the same as all wrx and sti's now. That is why you can use a stock STi axleback on your Stock midpipe as a direct fit. I should know since I have done it :D zacks62fairlane 03-07-2008, 11:31 PM The holes are different, you have to do a full header back swap just as the guy a few posts back said... i ran into the same problem when i swapped my exhaust, its just has to be swapped in its entirty if you are not willing to cut up the pipes. jordan s 03-08-2008, 02:37 AM meineke rotated the flange and stretched the holes for $85 and the welds are very thick and clean. very happy with the work they did and i am IN LOVE with this axleback. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v475/thesunstillsleeps/DSCF0583.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v475/thesunstillsleeps/DSCF0581.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v475/thesunstillsleeps/DSCF0582.jpg Counterfit 03-08-2008, 12:40 PM Stromungs are sexy :D SilverSubie2.5 03-08-2008, 02:30 PM Boy, it does look very nice on there!:) jordan s 03-09-2008, 05:13 PM soundclip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpEPUs4hMcA subiesurfer 03-09-2008, 05:35 PM sounds good man i like it jordan s 03-09-2008, 05:48 PM thank you. this is my 5th exhuast set up (including stock) and i finally found what i was looking for. PA-Outback2000 03-09-2008, 06:29 PM stromung is the best!! olsen726 03-10-2008, 04:22 AM thats funny, i just picked up a stromung axleback from a guy on the fourms, it mounted right up to my wagon perfectly :) i love it, it looks so much better than that little pea shooter that came on the car. it sounds better to. i cant wait to get headers, and a high flow to let more of that sound out. mdungelman 03-10-2008, 01:34 PM Stromung FTMFW! I've got the axleback and 2.5i specific midpipe. You know you want to!:D mdungelman 03-10-2008, 01:45 PM I'd love to Tim, but I've got a set of coilovers to install come spring time. I'm trying not to spend too much money at once. Unless I can get a set used for a little cheaper. Guess I can look around....just for fun, ya know ;). subiesurfer 03-10-2008, 01:55 PM Stromung FTMFW! First video sound sucked. subiesurfer 03-10-2008, 07:21 PM i like it, sounds good....i wonder w the stormung cat sounds like wehn the midpipe is resonated... subiesurfer 03-10-2008, 07:24 PM hows the highway drone on that? mdungelman 03-10-2008, 07:57 PM Not bad at all on the highway. I guess it can get a little noisy in back, but that happens due to being closer to the sound. Once I installed the Stromung midpipe sound was significantly louder. I was hoping things wouldn't get too raspy, and they didn't. Sound did get more throaty though (if there's a difference). I'm more than happy with it. For those interested: removing the resonator apparently makes and oem mufflers sound more raspy. But for aftermarket mufflers, such as stromung, it doesn't seem to hurt sound. Only makes it better! There's almost a slight rumble at times even though I have the stock EL headers. olsen726 03-11-2008, 04:00 AM i probably sound like a total noob, but how do you remove the resonator?? i just got the axleback, and i want it to be louder...and too those of you who are search nazis, i am searching this right now aswell mdungelman 03-11-2008, 08:21 AM One of the ways to do this is to have an exhaust shop cut it out and weld in a section of straight pipe. The only other option (that I know of) is to pick up a Stromung midpipe. Reforminded 03-14-2008, 04:13 PM A question for you guys with the stromug: It seems to me that at the lower rpms this exhaust seems to "gurgle" a little bit, especially in jordan's sound clip. I never seem to notice this with my stock setup--does something change with the stromug that causes this? Or is it always present but just more pronounced with the louder exhaust? Thanks. RM straight-through style mufflers seem to gurgle more than chambered (like your stock muffler) ones. Reforminded 03-14-2008, 05:36 PM straight-through style mufflers seem to gurgle more than chambered (like your stock muffler) ones. Is that gurgle an indication of a rough idle (perhaps from the reduction in back pressure)? gtwagon941 03-14-2008, 06:08 PM probably just more a function of less "muffling" in the can so you hear the "actual" sounds sounds nice. Stromungs always do. JS mdungelman 03-15-2008, 01:35 AM Is that gurgle an indication of a rough idle (perhaps from the reduction in back pressure)? Ya know, my car actually seems to idle rough when I first start it and its running "higher" rpms until it calms down. As far as the low rpm sound, its really just a low frequency "bwaaaaahhhh" until it gets going. But its not so fun at the low end. As gtwagon said, (insert exhaust maker) parts allow more of the actual sound to get out. Gotta love it! http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y183/mdungelman/borat.jpg |
