i recently upgraded my 04 wrx to a vf-34 and i noticed it kicks in at 3.500. however you can significantly notice turbo lag until it kicks in hella hard:devil:
could it be, what im feeling just a worn out clutch or even just more horspower where a upgraded clutch is necessary. ill include at the bottom some upgrades that is possibly inconjunction to what i feel. any advice is apreciated. car hasent recieved a pro tune. accessport tune only

vf-34
sti mounts
stock cams
short ram air intake
sti intercooler
sti injectors/walbro
i think its stock clutch

my real question is can the sppol kick in sooner? or is it somehting engine managment gots to do
idea: wastegate change? lower psi wastegate?

Gut that uppipe pronto if you haven't already. Made a big difference on my hybrid with stock TD04, but then again, the extra displacement helps a lot too. Still, gut it and you should see at a minimum 200-300rpm quicker spool. A nice aftermarket silicone turbine inlet pipe will help too I'm told, but I'm running the stocker.

get rid of cats before & after turbo.
try to polish stock exhaust manifolds.
a tune would some but not much in spool.

or get factory twin scroll set up.

gut cats (increases exhaust gas velocity into and out of the turbo)...bigger downpipe (helps with pressure drop)...inlet pipe (free's intake and allows free'er spinning of the compressor and thus turbine wheel).
A tune can help a great amount pending how you sit already.

p.s. don't say "gots to do"....ever ;)

Maybe if the tune is a little leaner down low?

If you're having issues with spooling at 3400 you're kinda screwed as far as making power is concerned. Then again, if a OTS map VF-34 car hits "hella hard," you might be alright. :D

tuning can move the spool time ALOT.

tuning can move the spool time ALOT.

^+1

custom tuning + GM BCS(or other 3port solenoid) or Hallman PRO or PRO RX MBC, that turbo is capable of full spool by 3000rpm

not necessarily leaner...fuel energy helps with spool too...more timing to get higher EGT's could help out as well ;)

You should be able to get the VF34 to spool by 3000 RPM with a catless uppipe, 3" TBE and good tune.
