It's a sad day when the oldest motorsports event in the country gets cancelled.

Verbatim from the New England Hillclimb Association list server:

I am writing to you with bad news. Due to many reasons we will not be holding the Mt. Washington Hillclimb in 2002. All of us at the Mt. Washington Auto Road are saddened by this occurrence and I can assure you that the decision was not made easily. For most of us this event is a big reason why we work here and to see it not happening will be very hard to deal with.

Because all of you have supported us over the years we wanted to write and tell you why we are not able to hold the event this year. During talks early this winter with Audi it became apparent that they would not be returning as the title sponsor. Since then we have explored every possible way to continue this race without support from a title sponsor and it just cannot happen. Another reason is that by June we will be in the middle of construction on our redesigned building. You may ask, "What does that have to do with the road?" Well unfortunately it has everything to do with the road, the planning of the event, our food service, our registration area, our technical inspection area and many more aspects of running this event. Another question that may come up is the possibility of holding a "toned down" event. As most of you know, we do not run "toned down" events and the cost to run the event this way would not be a wise decision either. Please understand that we have not let go of this event. We are planning to actively seek sponsorship for the 2003 Mt. Washington Hillclimb. If you have questions or need more information please call or email. 603-466-3988

Yet NASCAR rules the land unfettered.. No justice in this land..

I don't know the details, but I'll comment any way. On this one, Audi = :monkey:

That's not really fair. It'd be more reasonable to give Subbie and all the other marquees the finger for not stepping up in the first place. Audi has been pretty generous in the past with this event, putting on a good spread. Subbie or someone else could jump into the spot, right?

Regardless, a true pisser. I really enjoy this event...

Being a west coaster, I made my first trip up Mt Washington last Oct. What a neat road. I could visualise what a fine hill climb event it is. I'm sure you can pick up a title sponsor by 2003.
