on a set of cams i pick up(DPR stg3 sti cams), i noticed a few small marks on one of the lobes on the R intake cam.. it has a notch on each side of the lobe and it looks as if a small piece is missing(the size of a pencle tip)..

its only on one lobe and looks as if they have been machined smooth... idk if these will cause problems with the buckets or not.. what do you think??

you can see the spot where the hole is inbetween, to the left of the 2 notches

better shot of the notches on the outside edge of the lobe

2 notches again with the hole a little below them in the center

are these ok to use in a build?? or do i need to look for a new intake cam?

I would use them as long as the edges were not raised.

disclaimer: I am crazy and reuse headbolts too.

Personally I'd take them to a reputable machine shop, or better, a dedicated cam shop (like Delta Cams in washington) and get them to inspect them, and if necessary, repair them.

I'd be pretty crappy to destroy your engine for the sake of a $300 repair.

yeah, i just wanted to make sure its repairable...
i am taking them to a shop as soon as i can get to it, but i wanted to make sure it was even worth taking them in..
also, with new cams, valve springs and retainers, do i need new buckets?? its an 04 so its shimless already..

I dont see any reason they couldnt be repaired.

If anything, they may need to be balanced. do they even balance cams? I agree with the section being raised...if it is still flat, or push in just ont he corner...it should be ok.

if you are on a tight budget, you can "wet" sand the raised area, 600 grit with wd-40, do not remove any base metal just raised material, PM me for more details
