View Full Version : Where to Begin?

I have an 07 2.5i that is dying to be modded. I don't want to go hardcore with the engine...it's not a WRX or an STi and I know it. The only thing that I have done to the car so far is an axelback WRX exhaust.

Some friends of mine have suggested HIDs, and also tint. As far as technical goes, I would do intake, exhaust and suspension. I am not sure I would want to do much more.

Just wanted to post and see if anyone had any suggestions on where they would begin as I am new to the Subaru scene. Thanks guys.

suspension first, then intake and exhaust. Tint is important only if you live in a hot climate. HID ain't that useful unless most of your driving occurs at night.

Start with rear sway bar as your first mod.

tint really pulls a car together and is relatively cheap for a "mod" so id do that first, then i would do suspension...depends what ure looking for but do some research on what springs/coilovers are for u...im runnin tanabe gf210 springs...nice drop nice feel great handling, then hids

thats the order i did mine at least...still yet to do an intake because when it comes down to it theres very minimal choices for it, but maybe soon who knows

you can also pick up a cheap set of wrx stock wheels from an 06-07, got mine with 90% tread left for 400 bucks

I'm with Spore, if you're looking a BIG improvement get a larger rear swaybar, poly bushings, and heavy duty brackets. It was my first mod -RalliTek 22-24mm adjustable.

I have heard that the only easy power mods you can do to your car are an exhaust and intake.

Lightweight pullys are also supposed to be worth it. I heard the same thing about grounding kits.

People also say to do a lot to suspension, but I haven't looked into that yet.

My .02 cents

Get some springs first! Then start saving money for some good struts. Regardless of how low you go it gives the car a much better appearence.
After you get that mod out of the way go with some sway bars. Subaru Genuine parts has a few options available for front and rear that are bigger than stock if you don't want to break the bank. FYI: Turbo bars are an option if you don't mind modifying your second cat pipe.
In my opinion after you do springs and bars you should get some Stainless Steel lines with DOT 4 fluid. Everybody talks about making their car handle better and go faster but never concern themselves with stopping.
Exhaust should always come before intake. Your intake can only take in what the exhaust can put out. I too had WRX muffler, not much for performance but the appearence factor was a huge difference. I now have a Prodrive and I love it.
Now the intake! The door is wide open at this point, it's pretty much a preference thing.
If you want wheels try not to go higher than 17". Unless you got fat pocket$ and go with some light weight wheels anything bigger will be alot heavier than stock. Now the knick knacks that you can do that help a little if at all:

lightweight pulley(s)
short shifter/bushing
mounts: tranny & motor
radiator shroud
exhaust hangers
end links
aluminum suspension partsThis is just my opinion, except for end links I modded my 07 2.5i this way. I did the knick knacks at different stages but the meat & potatoes I did in this order.

FYI, swapping a RSB is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay easier than doing springs. And cheaper.

Sorry, what is the abbreviation of RSB and what does it do?

RSB stands for rear sway bar
When you go around a corner, the car will tend to pull to the outside of the turn. The outside wheels get pushed down and the inner wheels get pulled up. This phenomenon is call body roll and it reduces traction because not all wheels are planted to the ground. By added a rear sway bar to your car, it shifts some of the force from one side to another, reducing the chances of body roll.

Holy cow, what a bunch of replies. This is why I love this community! Thanks for all of the help guys, there are a lot of great ideas here. I suppose when I think about beginning to mod the 2.5i, I am looking for a distinct kind of end product. As I said earlier, I know it's not a turbo....nor will it ever. I am truly happy with my car. It is a blast to drive and it is so much fun in the snow. I think I want a car that people are going to look at whether on the street or at meets and say "Wow, that car is sharp". (Without it looking like I tried to apply for a role in Fast and the Furious.)

HIDs look great to me, but I am not sure I want to do that first. Dropping the car a little with a new set of springs is something that is definitely on my list, and the suspension components all sound exciting. Does anyone here have any recommendations on certain brands or places to purchase the items that won't cost an arm and a leg? I have a young family and money doesn't grow on trees around here.

Thanks a TON for all the help guys. Ultimately, your car is your inspiration and you should do what you want to do.....but thankfully, I have a lot of people here who are eager to help and that is awesome.
